we'll speak to senator kamala harris about that exchange in just minutes. lauren fox is live inside the hearing room. she's there. william barr, not going. what is going to happen today? >> this is the room where bill barr was supposed to be. in the chair behind me, that's where bill barr was going into sitting to be grilled by house democrats with concerns about how he handled the mueller report and its rollout. he's not attending because of a dispute with chairman jerry nadler over the format of the hearing. what nadler wanted was to allow staff lawyers on the republican and democratic side to question barr for 30 minutes each. that's not going to happen. the justice department said bill barr is not attending if that's the format. everything has been escalated. yesterday, the justice department refused to turn over the unredacted mueller report even though nadler subpoenaed it. nadler said he's going to give the justice department a day or two. then we expect him to move forward with contempt proceedings against the attorney general. here's what nadler sa

that's exactly what we saw from kamala harris. it really reminded me of that moment that also vaulted amy klobuchar onto the national stage during the brett kavanaugh hearings when she was very calm and surgical in the way that she interacted with him. so even before this moment, nicole, there were polls telling us, even though biden and sanders are at the top, the two candidates who most american voters want to hear more from are pete buttigieg and kamala harris. since you used a "vanity fair" headline, there's another headline that sums up the press she's getting, kamala harris guts barr like a fish, leaves him flopping on the deck. that's the takeaway and headlines she's getting from this moment. there's so much crowding going on now it's hard to say how long and how much of a bounce she'll get out of this, but people are interested in learning more about her. >> i visualize, to pick up where emily and the rev -- i go right to the stage. there are four candidates for different reasons. there's a gravitas there. my entire compan

in this moment, donald trump basically played right into kamala harris' hands. as you and i have talked about many times, her path to the nomination hinges on three things. galvanizing women voters who came out in such force in 2018, consolidating the black vote and turning out all of those young voters who did not turn out for hillary clinton and i think that so many of those female voters, democrats and some independents, when they hear that kind of gendered kind of sexist language from donald trump, there is a gut reaction there. and kamala harris is trying to connect with women in that way saying, look, he's coming after me and i've shown you this week that i'm tough enough to take him on in the debates and so you should contribute to the campaign. that is the argument she's making. >> also, as a result of this week, she's getting this jolt of new attention because of her tough questions to bill barr, take a look. >> in reaching your conclusion, did you personally review all of the underlying evidence? >> no. we took -- >> did -- >> we -- >> did mr. rosenste
