rispone in his race against sitting governor john bel edwards. also in play, and this is important, the virginia legislature. democrats are hoping to take back control before new redistricting maps are drawn up. still with us, john ralston, josh jamerson. john, out to you again. what races when all is said and done and we're here talking to steve kornacki tomorrow night, what's going to matter to you? >> well, i guess it's how the old saying goes, brian, the only extrapolation that matters is the one that's a year before election day. i mean i just think steve will say what any smart analyst would say. listen, if republicans get hurt in the deep south in these races, that may be a canary in a coal mine. but if they go to the republicans, i don't think it's going to matter that much. these off-year elections i think are always overanalyzed and people look for harbingers for the even-numbered years. there were some indications in the governors races that indicated maybe the democrats were going to do well. but, brian, you remember what happened in

rispone. he wasas backed by president trump, who held two rallies in louisiana this month to support him. but high turnout by african american voters in louisiana, particularly in new orleans, propelled john bel edwards to reelection. in arizona, cell phone video footage has surfaced showing a sheriff's deputy tackling and pinning a 15-year-old quadruple amputee to the ground. the boy was abandoned by his parents and lives in a group home in tucson. the pima county sheriff's deputy was responding to calllls from e facility about the teenager allelegedly knockingng ovea trashcan. the deputy has since been placed on administrative leave. in fresno, california, four people were killed and another six were wounded after at least one gunman opened fire during a backyard party on sunday. the shooter fled the scene. the police have not yet made any arrests. sunday's shooting comes amid a string of massss shootings in california, including at a high school in santa clarita and at two halloween parties

moments after he beat his republican challenger eddie rispone to win a second term in a state president trump won by 20 points. bel edwards is now the second democrat this month to win a gubernatorial race in a red state. his election is another defeat for the president who traveled to louisiana three times to campaign for rispone. it's also another sign republicans are losing ground in the suburbs and that right there could spell trouble for trump in 2020. the panel is back. john, susan, and basil. all right, guys. john bel edwards. is he a bell weather for 2020? >> not necessarily, no. you hit -- you hit the point of the trend that is concerning for the white house. the suburbs idea. that he is -- it's not just in louisiana. we saw it in kentucky, as well. we saw it on, you know, in election night a few weeks ago where he had trouble outside of cincinnati. he had trouble outside of philadelphia and so on. if the republicans lose in the suburbs, that's a problem for trump. the louisiana race is a little bit of -- perhaps. this is a very conservative democratic governor. out of step wit
