meteorologist, kari hall is tracking what you can expect today. also under a red flag warning right now? >> yes, we are. the rest of the week we will be heating up, but we have a cool start to our morning, and into the afternoon. take a look at the wind speed forecast. we're starting out this morning, already gusting winds. most of us in the valleys already feeling the gusts, 15 to 20 miles per hour, and look at the bright colors here for the inland east bay. we're all up and down the diablo range. this is where we will have the highest fire danger today. with the northerly wind comes low humidity. winds at 35 to 25 miles per hour, and we may see gusts over 60 today, and still even into tonight and early tomorrow morning, it's still pretty gusty. we have a prolonged period of the high wind gusts, and you want to make sure even as you are stepping out this morning, everything around the house is secure and ready for the high winds today. our temperatures reaching into the mid and upper 60s for many of the microclimates. a few low 70s for the inland

first our team coverage kicks off with meteorologist kari hall tracking it neighborhood by neighborhood. who is still seeing it all? >> the rain has cleared the bay area but we've been talking about what we've called the bomb cyclone for days now. and this is the reason why. as we loop the past 48 hours, we can see this storm intensify. it's called that because of the measures of low pressure in the center of the storm that dropped 24 millibars within the course of a day. when it intensified that quickly, we saw copious amounts of rainfall that happened to some tropical moisture and brought it right into the bay area. as we look at what's going on now, a lot of the rain tapering off but still that chance we could see a few spotty showers in the north bay as well as some other parts of the bay area by the next couple of hours. but, yes, take a look at the rainfall totals. all of this had to go somewhere. when it flowed down from mt. tam it went to a lot of the valleys and creeks and caused a lot of flooding. and santa rosa, over 8 1/2 inches of rain. oakland hills, more than 7 inches of

let's check in with meteorologist, kari hall. kari, how long will that smoke linger in the bay area? >> it's going to start to move in later on this afternoon, late morning into the afternoon. some of the smoke starting to come in from the south of the alisal fire. moderate air quality, and that means people sensitive to the smoke, children and the elderly should limit time out there in the south and east bays, and it may not make it all the way up to the north bay. by 10:00, we're in the low 60s. when the temperatures warm up, most likely that smoke will be settling in. we will see the temperatures in the low 80s for san jose, and 83 in napa. for livermore, expect a high of 85 degrees. we'll talk more about more changes ahead in our weekend forecast. >>> mike, you are saying the alert does continue right now? >> it does. you know where the casino is, we have slowing when you get to the expressway. we have a closure for golf course drive. only the middle lane gets by. major damage, but no major injuries reported. not a lot of slo

some drivers were caught off guard yesterday because they were not watching kari hall. powder was coming down. others were just happy to see wet weather after a really dry season. some places got up to two feet of snow. not enough to go snowboarding and skiing and all that, but it's a nice start. >> yeah. keep in mind it's october and it was a nice way to start to build the snowpack. mt. rose got 42 inches of snow. of course they have been tweeting about that. there were a lot of spots that did get decent amounts of snow. looking at the forecast, well, it's pretty dry. one inch, maybe a dusting over the next week or so. this is the last little bit we will see for a while. we do have one more system passing by two our north that is bringing in scattered light showers. the northbound will have the best chance of seeing this rain for today, especially by late morning and early into the afternoon. i will stop it here at 1:00. looks like santa rosa, napa, ukiah could see a slight chance of seeing rain pushing through. our main focus will be the north bay. anywhere across the

vianey arama in for kari hall. you've been watching the storm closely. >> simply because we haven't had rain in a very long time. we have the first to move in late last night. kicked up some of those winds and the wind advisory has been canceled. i want to show you a little bit of your travel commute. we have a chance of seeing scattered amounts. temperatures will be in the 60s this afternoon. then as we roll around into the later portion of tonight, we're going to get a break from the rain. heading into thursday, we've got plenty of instability. this is going to bring in our second storm heading into thursday night and friday morning. so far we've only gotten a couple hundreds of an inch. we're hoping for better rain totals heading into saturday's storms. now let's get a check on how the roads are doing with mike. >> not so bad. maybe slicker in some spots. in san jose, pretty dry. the traffic did build up for the shot. a cash north of 101, shy of the 180 transition ramp. as i understand, it's out of the lanes. it

meteorologist, kari hall is tracking what we can see weather-wise out there. we see the fog so we know it's cooler in san francisco. how is it shaping up in other parts of the bay? >> we are going to see clouds all across the bay area. it's going to be hard to get rid of the clouds. maybe even just a peek of sunshine here and there, something we are not used to. we are also, i guess unfortunately, not used to seeing a lot of green dots here. we will have better air quality today as we see the system sweeping through. it's bringing in fresher air quality conditions for the bay area. as you are stepping out in concord, it's 61 degrees. we are still going to be at 61 degrees through about 9:00 and then seeing our temperatures slowly warming up from there with a mix of sun and clouds. as we head to the south bay, look at the highs for this afternoon. very nice. even a little cooler than normal, reaching up to about 74 degrees in morgan hill and los gatos, and the east bay seeing temperatures in the mid-70s. oakland reaching 68 degrees. you can see that 7-day forec

meteorologist, kari hall, is following the red flag warning. >> yeah, we have to be careful over the next 24 to 36 hours. this continuing until 5:00 tomorrow evening. the high wind gusts means we could see fires that might start rapidly because of the high winds and low humidity. let's go through the relative humidity today. this is something that causes fires to spread quickly as well, and the relative humidity numbers, when they are in the teens it dries out the vegetation more and we have record dry vegetation already to begin with with the drought. tomorrow morning, usually we see the humidity levels coming to the 70% range, and it's only going to be 25% humidity starting out tomorrow morning. in the overnight hour when we get time to have higher humidity, that doesn't look like it happens tonight into tomorrow. more on that coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. thank you, kari. >>> facebook making changes. still ahead for you this morning on "today in the bay," a new feature of the tech giant will have new features rolling out. >>> mike has tabs on your commute across the

i am meteorologist, kari hall. we are starting out with temperatures in the 50s but headed for the mid-70s today. we will see more sunshine in the forecast, but we'll also see an increase in cloud cover tomorrow. our inland temperatures will only reach into the mid-60s. the sunshine returns on halloween with still some cool air in place, but then go into next week it gets even cooler as a new storm system arrives and brings in showers, and then a second storm system behind that on wednesday. st weather it's kind of cool because it's the second geomagnetic storm we've seen in the last couple of weeks. so there's a lot of solar energy >> i love when you speak in different languages. >> i just want to confirm it's a coronal mass ejection? >> that's right. just a big geomagnetic storm >> every time you say aurora borealis, i take a shot. >> not slowing away our shot >>> we'll focus on halloween safety for you and your family from candy to covid, what all parents need to know ahead of the big night of trick or treating

kari hall has been tracking that. is it a day we can go outside and have lunch? >> absolutely. once again, it's been so nice out there. and the air quality is better so we don't have to worry about breathing in smoke, especially for the inland valleys. the cold front comes in, bringing in fresher breezes but also all the clouds rolling by over the south bay and that will continue today and most likely the next couple of days until that system moves on. so with that cold front sweeping through, it's cooling down our temperatures but we'll warm up this weekend. live look outside in walnut creek if you're about to head out for lunch there. right now 63 degrees. and we can see clouds filtering that sunshine. headed toward the low 70s for the middle of the day. this is a big cooldown compared to yesterday in some spots about 5 to 10 degrees cooler and our high temperatures only headed toward the low 70s today. for morgan hill expect a high of 74. now at the start of the week we now we can leave the air o and the east bay we're mostly looking at highs reaching into the mid-70s. 75 in

kari hall monitoring all of that. how is it looking? >> it's going to be a great weekend. it's looking so beautiful out there. i like this view looking at the bay bridge. it's clear right now. we've also seen some fog rolling over the golden gate bridge. a little mixture of it all. that's going to keep those temperatures near the coast and at golden gate park. we'll see those temperatures here in the next hour in the mid-60s and holding steady there only making it up to 68 degrees during the middle of the day and cooling down as we head toward 6:00 to 7:00. make sure that you're bundled up if you're going there. but you won't even need a jacket if you'll be in saratoga. this is a popular destination for a lot of families this weekend. the pumpkin patch. queen's pumpkin patch, headed for the mid-70s at 2:00 to 3:00 this afternoon and this evening. we're going down to about 67 degrees at 6:00. a look at all of our microclimates and the temperatures. it's so nice. only reaching into the low to mid-70s for inland areas, but it will be cooler this weekend. we'll talk more about
