polls in virginia show as of now, it is a tight race. as a matter of odds and history and statistics, the democrats really have their work cut out for them in this race. over the course of my lifetime, and i'm old. i was born in 1973. i know, right? over the course of my entire life, every time a new president has been elected to the white house, the other party wins the virginia governor's race the following year. virginia holds its governors races in off years, in odd years, and so there's always a governor's race after a presidential election. the year after. and it happens every single time that whoever the new president is who just won the presidency, the other party then wins in virginia, every single time. when i was 3, jimmy carter won the presidency in 1976, a democrat, obviously, then in 1977, a republican wins for virginia governor. then in 1980, it was ronald reagan who won the presidency, obviously a republican, and so in 1981 it was a democrat who won the virginia governor the following year. it happens every time. when geo

the issue is president trump is extremely unpopular in virginia. he lost virginia in 2016 and 2020. part of the reason is because the population centers in virginia, whether northern virginia, outside washington, d.c., the norfolk area, hampton roads -- those are incredibly blue leaning parts of virginia, the population centers. mathematically, there are more democratic voters in virginia than republican voters, so this is about a turnout game. the problem is there is more republican enthusiasm in virginia right now. amy: as we mentioned, there's been a firestorm in the virginia race over the teaching of toni morrison's acclaimed pulitzer prize-winning novel "beloved" in schools. it stems from an ad by the republican candidate glenn youngkin that features a mother who once campaigned to have the book banned from her high school senior's science curriculum. this is a clip. >> as a parent company have to catch everything. so when my son showed me his reading assignment, myeart sunk it was some of the most explicit material you can imagine. i met with lawmakers. they could n believe wh

the democratic party of virginia put out -- honestly, you could put this in rural virginia, this would be great for glen youngkin but they're hoping for the opposite effect in northern virginia. >> the same way republicans are trying to make this more of a national referendum around certain cultural issues. democrats are putting this in a national context by tying youngkin to president trump because they believe that a rejection of the former president and trumpism is going to help drive turnout among democratic voters. and you see terry mcauliffe trying to drive home that message. you saw former president obama do it. youngkin hasn't outwardly fashioned himself in president trump's likeness but he's still trying to court trump supporters. and the big question for democrats is, this was a strategy effective for them in 2018 when former president trump was in office. in 2020 when former president trump was on the ballot. is it as effective when he is not himself on the ballot when you're talking about other republican candidates down ballot? can the entire election still be a referendum

this is virginia of 2021. but there is no doubt, listen, democrats being able to celebrate a big legislative package that would have concrete results for people in virginia would be helpful. there is no question about that. but i agree with larry, turnout is key here. now, polls show republicans had enthusiasm. when you look at the early vote numbers, it's less present there. so at the end of the day this will be a close race and i think even if terry mcauliffe wins, democrats have to step back and say we won virginia by ten. we won't win by ten again if he wins. some of that is unique to virginia but what happened with swing voters and base and then you got a year to basically try to fix that and there is no doubt if you got two major pieces of legislation that you could do story telling and every family in america, that is most importantly good substantive things to do for people but it's also great political material that every incumbent can live off and running against opposed all these things. that helped
