ro khanna. president biden has called upon the american oil industry, which we are proud of in many ways, to pump more oil. we are hopeful that they will respond and pump more oil. they do have that oil. so we should pump that oil. he's also called for a release of oil from the strategic preserve. we all support that also. and we all just came from a heartbreaking meeting with bipartisan by zoom with president zelenskyy. and the most moving part for me was not only his plea for unity and help as he fought for freedom and justice in the world and in ukraine, but he showed beautiful pictures of ukraine and then the destruction of it with the bombs and the fires and how it was destroying their way of life. i think all of us love the forests that we have in our country. there are too many fires. maybe we'll understand more what's causing them. but whatever is causing them, we've got to join hands and work together to preserve our wildlife preserve, our forests, and it's important to our environment.

joining me now is congressman ro khanna. thank you for joining me. we're focussed on these horrifying images coming out of bucha. president biden said he's working on new sanctions. president zelenskyy said it doesn't go far enough. what's your take and should the u.s. go further and give zelenskyy what he's been asking for, the polish fighter jets for example? >> the images are horrific. they're war crimes. i mean, brutal targeting of civilians. it's horrific this is happening in the 21st century. we need more punishing sanctions, sanctions going after more of the oligarchs. only about 12 of them have had assets seized and going after more people other than putin who are responsible. we need to get ukraine more weapons. we provided them anti-aircraft missiles. they need more missiles, more planes, more tanks. the united states is helping other allies get those weapons to ukraine. >> congressman, president zelenskyy says all of those steps, including the military aid to date, has not gone far enough. one of the big things we heard zelenskyy call for

>> thank you so much, chair khanna. you know, so many of these principles that we are discussing today, whether it is directly confronting the realities of climate change, land use, creating high paying jobs in order to protect our public lands, advocacy for indigenous sovereignty, all these things are core green new deal tenets. but i want us to zoom out a little bit because when we were first drafting the green new deal and many other pieces of environmental legislation, very often they were so many folks, well meaning, well intentioned, deeply studied, that said, it makes no sense to consider issues of justice and injustice with decarbonizing our economy. and they said we need to stick to the science of the problem and worry about all of the injustice stuff later or separately. and i think it's important for us to take the opportunity, miss meders-night, to actually discuss how injustice and colonization is a -- is part of what has led us to this climate crisis today. in 2021, the united states experienced record-bre

representative khanna goes on to say, no. are you prepared to lowering the production as the paris accords say, yes or no. if the democrats cared about climate they would support -- with lower environmental standards and higher emissions. in fact, california representative katie porter illuminated this when she chided the krochlts or opposing mr. biden's halt on new oil and lease uses on federal land. you can't have it both ways democrats. you can't blame others for the rising prices of gasoline at the pump when last fall you were also blaming or at least the dichotomy of that, of trying to get oil and gas companies to produce less. so the day before putin invaded ukraine, gas prices were already up 55% from before the day biden took office. why? one reason was displayed by representative scalise that costly and burdensome regs that drive the cost of production up for oil and gas producers. in fact, he provided these regs that i would like to submit for the record, madam chair. the regs that are driving the cost of production

representative ro khanna says the administration should be sending more weapons to ukraine faster and making things more painful. >> my understanding is we've gotten sanctions on about 12 of their 100 oligarchs, but there's still 88 who have wealth which we haven't been able to go of after. we need to go after that. we need to have more punishing sanctions on putin. >> reporter: so the european union starting to put actions behind their words. in a summit with china, the e.u. confronted china directly about aiding russia economically or with equipment. the european union commission president added that china has a responsibility to end the war. meanwhile, china blaming the invasion on ukraine and the u.s -- on the u.s. and nato by adding members in eastern europe. a foreign ministry spokesperson saying, quote: as a promise of the cold war, nato should have been disbanded after the chance of the former soviet union. this coming on a day that nato account retweets saying global security is evolving, but nato allies will always remain united to defend our democracy, security and freedom.

patriotism are ask you pay six bucks for gas and oil companies are making recovered profits, congressman ro khanna, he is a fine, decent, patriotic representative, i take something away from him personally. price gouge something not buying back your own stock. blaming the oil companies, all their ceos have been herded to capital hill today, they're all serving various roles as human pinatas. someone not apologist for the oil industry, we have to realize what is going on here. forget just basic supply and demand issues, anxiety over a war. go back to when this administration started. we looked askance at the fossil fuel industry. whatever your views on the industry that got the pal ball rolling where we would prioritize other forms of energy. you could make the argument why aren't we in all all energy. the argument was to start things off little less fossil fuel focus. the fear that the oil industry is interested in just making money. back to the other issue that has come up in these hearings today. we'll explore with a guy very big in the drilling business, this notion that they are making money.

some of the people that have to take responsibility for the prices, are democrats like congressman ro khanna, he came in and wanted to go after oil and drilling and production. he's the gentleman that wanted to quill investment in fossil fuels and all of a sudden, all of a sudden we're short of supplies and why aren't these guys doing more? so you know, you go after somebody, beat them up, beat them up, knock them down and hey, why aren't you putting up a bitter better fight. >> and one of the things i think i heard during the hearings with the congressman, with great respect, almost saying drill, baby, drill. and i'm thinking did i hear that right, are you telling this industry, you said that had to cut back and quit drilling so much to drill, baby, drill. and indeed, they did say that. >> they did say that, this was the country that said, hey, you can't drill yourself to energy independence. yes, you can. we did it here in america. when everybody said we couldn't, the u.s. energy industry, capitalism, rose up to the challenge and did what they said was impossible. and now they want to, you
