first, jolene kent is joining me along with nbc news white house correspondent carol lee and the host of "full disclosure." welcome to all you guys. thanks for joining me on this. i just laid out the numbers for everybody there. talk us through the details of this report. >> what we're seeing is actually labor force participation shrinking a bit, meaning more people are leaving the workforce. what you're going to see going forward is an ongoing, tight labor market. that means, as you mentioned, with wages going up 5 1/2% but inflation being 8 1/2% and not enough workers and, by the way, two job openings for every unemployed person, workers out there are still going to have their pick of where they want to work and how much they want to make. that's going to continue to drive up costs. that's really the big takeaway from today's jobs report. yes, the jobs market remains very strong. it's the 12th straight month of over 400,000 jobs added, but that labor shortage is really driving up inflation. and so that continues to be a problem for the federal reserve, which, as you remember, hiked

joining me now is carol lee at white house and kelly cobiella in ukraine. carol, i want to start with you. you were first to report the u.s. intelligence helped sink russia's ship. what more can you tell us? great job breaking this. >> reporter: what we learned is that there was a lot of speculation at the time when this ship sank on april 14th. u.s. officials tell us that the u.s. had a hand in helping sink this ship. the ukrainians asked the u.s. about this ship that was in the black sea just south of odesa. the u.s. identified the ship and said where it was -- helped confirmed where it was located. u.s. officials say that they did not have advanced knowledge of ukraine striking the ship with two missiles, which ultimately sank it, nor were they involved in that strike. there's a little bit of trying to keep distance there between the u.s. helping identify the ship and also -- but not saying they were involved in this. that's because there's concern among the -- within the administration that having this out there so publically could, in fact, provoke vla

lths dive right in with white house correspondent carol lee, "washington post" bureau chief ashley parker is also senior political analyst. thanks to both of you. carol, you're one of the reporters who wrote a story with the headline "inside a biden white house adrift" and it points to the texas shooting as a horrific reminder the president has not successfully pushed congress to pass legislation on gun violence. so what's the plan inside the white house right now? how involved will president biden himself be? >> we're hearing from the president today and asked in the oval office a meeting with the leader of new zealand whether he would meet with mitch mcconnell on gun control measures and he said he will be meeting with members of congress about this. as you noted, the president also said yesterday that he feels as though everybody is becoming in his words more rational. so expressing hope something might actually get done. that remains to be seen. but the president today is says he's ready to step in and do some negotiating if he's meeting with lawmakers. while the president was in texa

. >> carol lee with the scoop! >> good one. the president was in south korea. the trip focused on that meeting the mansion. he also announced a plan that the company samsung is going to give in texas, focusing on the u.s. economy and how he is trying to bring new jobs to the u.s.. there was a big portion of, that as well as north korea literally looming over the south korean portion of his visit. the president called on north korea to denuclearize. obviously there are no signs that north korea is going to do that. and he said he would be willing to meet with kim zhang and if that came to pass. if he felt like kim jong-un was serious. now he is in japan, he will meet with prime minister here. north korea will still be an issue. u.s. officials are saying that intelligent still shows it is possible north korea could test nuclear weapons or launch some sort of missile while the president is in the region. so, north korea is still a concern and will be a topic of his discussions. but again, it is larger economic focus. the president is going to unveil this indo-paci

i want to bring in carol lee. what does this mean? >> when you break it down, it just means the u.s. government is able to put more resources into trying to get her released. so this means that the case is now going to be handled by the u.s. special presidential envoy for hostage affairs. that office will coordinate all the diplomatic efforts the try to get her released. this is not always a bilateral issue. other countries can be involved. we saw that with the release of trevor reed. by moving it into this office under this umbrella, this new classification, it just allows the government to have more resources to push this forward and indicates they are going to more aggressively pursue her release. that doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be more public about this. these things tend to take place more quietly. this is not something they want to draw a lot of attention to. they're concerned the more attention this case gets, it could be counterproductive. there are going to be a lot of behind the scenes effort to bring her home

lee. great to see you. obviously, the president had this news conference in japan a short time ago. and the big headline is taiwan. he said he would use the u.s. military to defend taiwan if china invaded. white house officials immediately tried to clarify that. it's been a little bit of time now. what more you are hearing? what did the president mean to say? >> well, the president has not yet come out to try to clarify this, jonathan and this is the second time in eight months that he said something like this, the difference which is this time, where he's signaling that the u.s. will use military intervention with china, if china why to invade taiwan, he couldn't have been much clearer about what he was saying, and he was asked a very direct question and he answered very directly. and the other difference is the last time he said something like this, he was in washington, and this time, he's actually in the region. and that raises the stakes a little bit here. and so we've already seen ch

nbc news white house correspondent carol lee joins us. was this a slip of the tongue or is our policy changed or changing? >> reporter: as you noted, the white house is saying there is no change in u.s. policy here. they issued a statement clarifying that after the president's comments, saying he was also referring to the u.s. commitment to the taiwan relations act to defend taiwan. so then you look at what the president said. as you noted, it was pretty clear and direct. the question was asked directly, he answered it directly. so he's -- it's also not the first time the president has said something like this. he said something similar in october. one explanation is he meant what he said. and the consequences oh of that are a reaction from china. they reacted negatively condemning the president's statements. and there's concern it could ratchet up tensions in this region. it is notable the president made these comments in the region. the last time he said something like this, he was in washington. so that's a little bit of a difference t

nbc's carol lee is traveling with the president and she joins me now from seoul. good morning carroll. >> good morning katie. >> carol, can you tell us how things are going over there in terms of the energy and in terms of the dynamic between the beatings that he's having in south korea. >> yeah absolutely, well as you mentioned the, the president talked a lot about north korea in his press conference earlier today. both presidents, president unit and president biden, colin north korea to denuclearize. that is not something north korea has shown any signs of even willingness to discuss doing. the administration has reached out a number of times according to the administration officials to see if there was interest on behalf of north korea indigo she asians over its nuclear program. and it has gotten a response. and what we heard from president biden was that, he is willing to meet with kim jong-un if kim jong-un with serious insincere. those are the presidents. words about negotiations toward to denuclearization. again, no signs of that is the case. and the other

starting off our reporting, pete williams, carol lee, yamish, in jackson. and kimberly atkins, columnist for "the boston globe." pete, we're going to start with you. how did the news come about? >> we don't know. that's the question that the supreme court would like, too. i can't think of a time in supreme court history, where anything like this has happened. especially in such a high-profile case as this. this is going to be something that the supreme court is going to want to know exactly what happened here. i doubt it's one of the justices that cast the suspicion on the clerks that work in the court, that support the justices' work. i'm sure there's going to be a top-to-bottom review of how this happened. the court isn't saying anything. it wouldn't say it's investigating. if it did that, it would be confirming this was a leak. they can't be doing that. it's just remarkable. i'm at a loss for words. lots of leaks in washington. you don't expect them from the supreme court. >> have there been cases of this happening in the past? and how hermatic is the su

carol lee. what can we expect from biden's visit in tokyo today? >> well largely, michael, he's going to be focused on the economy while he was here in the pan. there will be some focus on a north korea that is obviously a big issue in the region. we have heard from u.s. officials today that they are still concerned that north korea could test a nuclear device or an intercontinental ballistic missile while the president is in japan. that is still an issue. low to the other security issues that are discussed when the president meets with the prime minister. the president is also going to unveil this indo-pacific economic framework. and so that is designed to have the countries in the region get on the same page in terms of enhancing trade among them. and dealing with things like supply chains and tackling climate change. the question with all of that is how many countries actually sign on to this. the idea is to have some economic checks on china promoting what the administration is calling economic security. he will also meet with the quad, the u.s

the state at the center of this supreme court case, carol lee is at the white house. and cecil richards joins us. she cochairs a political action committee called american bridge. thanks to all of you for being here and starting us off. pete, i want to begin with you. walk us through what this leak means. it's a draft, but do you anticipate this maybe a done deal at this point? >> it sure seems like it. everyone should be shocked that a draft supreme court opinion has been leaked. i don't think that has ever happened in the history of of the supreme court. never of this magnitude. i don't think anybody who tolled this case is going to be surprised by what the draft says. they maybe a little surprised by the force of it. but the bottom line, the court is going to overturn roe v. wade has seemed obvious since december 1st when this case was argued in the supreme court. mississippi's abortion law would ban abortion after 15 weeks. when mississippi first went to the courtroom, ruth bader ginsburg was still on the court. they said you don't have to overturn roe. just jup h
