a number of factors in this race with congressman madison cawthorn. he did lose. tell us what made the difference here. >> reporter: you know, jim, erica, in talking to people here, a lot of what it came down to is not what people outside the district have been talking about, the whole list of scandals that have followed cawthorn around since he essentially took office, but especially in the past few months. instead it had to do with decisions he made, like many calling him absent or the fact that when the maps were originally redrawn here in north carolina, before they were thrown out, he switched districts to get closer to the city of charlotte and then came back after they were thrown out. a lot of people we talked to said they saw that as abandoning the district, but it also opened up the seat and that's when chuck edwards, the state senator from the area, got into the race, he said he didn't get back out when cawthorn came because at that point he felt like the people of western carolina needed a more serious candidate. he also had the backing of the most pow

in a lot of ways with cawthorn, it was very personal. but i mean, i do think there were some things about cawthorn that were kind of unique. he was repeatedly kind of bringing weapons or wasn't supposed to be bringing weapons. he had these videos that frankly came right out of the oppo files put out there with the intention of torpedoing his political career. i think republicans on the hill felt like they needed to deal with cawthorn before he became even more of a problem for them, and he is in his mid-20s. he's young, and he clearly did not have the political support to withstand this full-throttle assault. honestly in some ways it's low-hanging fruit for these republicans in congress. it's an open question whether they see this as a case study for how they can potentially bring in line some of the other members who they might think are problematic. maybe marjorie taylor greene, maybe lauren boebert. but i think that remains to be seen because those others are just a lot more difficult. they don't actually have quite as much baggage as

cawthorn's office just responding to us. i'm going to read you a piece here, they're welcoming the opportunity to prove that congressman cawthorn committed no wrong doing and he was falsely accused bipartisan adversaries. they reiterate this is a formallty. that job cawthorn will be in for just a couple more months because he lost his primary election, and as they launch this investigation, they said this doesn't mean he did anything wrong necessarily. but for a committee that's shrouded in secrecy, this is probably the last thing we'll hear from them before they complete their investigation. but cawthorn doesn't have much time left here. so we've seen pictures, videos, allegations of potentially that wrongful relationship with a congressional staffer, a member of his team, some other things that have come to light. one interesting thing, they say they're not investigating a speeding ticket that he received while driving with a revoked license in north carolina. they say they have enough evidence to see if perhaps cawthorn d

madison cawthorn lost his re-election bid. the freshman lawmaker conceded the primary to state senator edwards. cawthorn repeatedly found himself mired in scandal and controversy. not great news for donald trump with his endorsed candidate conceding pretty early in the night. trump doubled down calling on voters in the party to give him a second chance. >> i think he had a second chance. a third chance. many. however he made the same mistakes and embarrassing statements and awful claims about his colleague on the hill they invited him to orgies and did drugs. that got him on the wrong side of his colleagues. he had colleagues in north carolina urging for him to be removed from his current seat and campaigning against him as an incumbent, a very difficult spot to be in and he had run in one district? north carolina and jumped to another and came back to another district. a lot of people felt he turned their backs on them. those are all factors playing into why he drnlt win. he is young. he will soon learn the error of his ways.

, or was this loss unique to cawthorn and his challenges? >> i think it was quite unique, and i agree with abby. i think, look, every state is different and every candidate is different, but all in all, you're seeing an accumulation of people at least winning nominating contests who have been trump-backed or embrace the mantra of trump's policies and stances who in many cases pwantd to overturn joe biden's election win, who have perpetuated the lie that there was mass fraud or donald trump actually won, and so you're setting up a situation here where either democrats in some cases may think that benefits them. may think it makes it easier for them to win statewide races. in other cases where democrats and what's left of the republican political establishment are very concerned these candidates could win and then lead governor's or join the senate. the contest we're going to see a week from now in georgia, it could have implications for the senate primary, but the governor' pris mary and the secretary of state's primary are clearer litmus tes
