"today in the bay's" cheryl hurd reports. >> reporter: we do know that the plane took off in sacramento. we also know that the plane made circles around the marin headlands before it crashed. you could see the crashed plane through the thick fog on a country ridge north of casa mill road in the marin headlands. county search and rescue teams surrounding the plane before nightfall. we, along with nbc bay area's aviation consultant, tracked the tail number on flight aware. >> i followed the flight path out of sacramento's executive airport, south side of sacramento, down through the delta, above skaggs island, turns due south toward treasure island. then he starts descending pretty rapidly and started doing some circles over the bay. >> reporter: the animation shows the plane that appears to be in distress. >> appeared to be lost in the clouds. from what i understand, it was very foggy. the visibility was probably zero. >> reporter: that happened around noon. the faa says an emergency beacon for a small aircraft was activated at 2:15. according to the faa, the vans rv-10 experimental plan
