mcconnell manage that caucus if he doesn't just have cruz and hawley but the majority of his caucus trumpers who are being pushed to be against mitch mcconnell and being pushed to enact really extreme laws? it will be interesting to see if they take the senate. i hope they don't. i hope their extremism causes them problems in november and allows the democrats to hold on to their majorities. >> ruth, i want to ask you about the supreme court and the ethics issues, the lack of popularity of the court, which is showing up in the polls. the whole question of clarence thomas' wife and the way she advocated for the 2020 election to be overturned, texting the tests to mark meadows, the former chief of staff, should the court be the only court in the land that takes care of its own ethics or should there be oversight? >> there's a law that requires the justices to recuse themselves if their impartiality can be questioned. it's a law without teeth. it would very much behoove the justices to think about ways to get in front of the issue. the supreme court is very complicated, because under normal circ

this just after vance declared himself a never-trumper and used tv appearances and twitter to talk about the president and now his allegiance with trump is making him enemies with the republican establishment in washington. many privately regard vance with the same disgust they felt toward trump when he entered the white house in 2017. and the aforementioned lauflin markay, axios reporter, joining us now. in your new reporting, you detail key names who helped convince former president trump that jd vance was indeed worth endorsing. tell us about this. who are they? >> yes, donald trump jr. was perhaps the biggest one. he's really been pushing vance privately for a while. long before the endorsement actually came. tucker carlson was a huge backer. and of course, the most popular cable host on tv right now. and just immensely popular with a pretty influential sub-set of the republican base. so it was folks who have the former president's ear and who knew how to, you know, how to sell him to the former president, in a way that would overcome the past comments that you mentioned, when vance

and you can't help but not be surprised because -- a never trumper and then he was seeking out trump's endorsement and in fact got it. so is this type of rhetoric, this talk, these conspiracy theories are they going to propel ohioans voters to the polls to vote in favor of him? >> so that's the question and i think you sort of framed why he's doing this really well. j.d. vance has the trump endorsement but the question is does he have the trump voters. certainly his republican rivals have been for weeks and months on the trail, on the ad airwaves attacking vance for using his past comments about donald trump, past criticism of donald trump to really question whether he has the trump bona fides. and so i think that's really what's behind the incendiary comments like this. vance is trying to make sure that he can hold down the trump voter, not just have the trump endorsements. >> so he's testing it? >> well i think he just, i think the question for the vance right now is. maybe these kinds of comments are not going to play well in a general election but if i don't get there that doesn't

he's a political novice and surprisingly he's a former never trumper. and while this endorsement did propel vance to the top of the pack, it is by no means a done deal. you have to remember this, when vance was speaking out against trump in 2016, he was speaking out aggressively against the people who voted for him. and so when you talk to voters on the ground yesterday, they were still questioning vance's loyalty. so interesting to see what happened there. the other two candidates, josh mandel, campaigning with senator ted cruz over the weekend, he had tried to get trump's endorsement, unsuccessfully, and the other is former state senator matt dolan. dolan is interesting. he's trump friendly but did not try to get trump's endorsement and he has said it is time for the republican party to move forward from trump's lies about the election in 2020. there is some indication that dolan is gaining momentum on the ground here. we have seen the fronting their dolan. it was interesting on the trail, we spoke to so many voters which are still undecided. there is
