written by our guest here tonight andrew mccabe. kara, let me begin with you here. what are you learning about these missing text messages? >> good evening, laura. this is new reporting from my colleagues whitney wild back home. what sources tell them is the inspector general of the department of homeland security knew as early as may of 2021 that some of these secret service text messages were missing. that is seven months earlier than we had known that he was informed of this and more than a year before he informed the house select committee investigating january 6th. the secret service says that is due to a data retention, a data reset issue that they had when they collected these phones from the government employees, and they were doing some data migration. this is just one of many new details we're learning that raised more questions than answers about these text messages. joining me now to discuss is former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe. andrew, great to have you here. what would be your top questions today for pat cipollone in. >> well, you know, there's so many questions for pat cipollone, and obviously that's happening, if he's in there for six hours plus, they're going deep, and it also tells us he's pandering a lot of questions, something people are concerned about. if i had the opportunity to talk to him, i'd have to follow up on some of the bomb shell revelations that we learned from cassidy hutchinson. for me, the most significant thing we learned from her was that trump knew that the crowd he was exhorting to go to the capitol was actually armed, so i'd focus on what he knew of trump's intention to go to the capitol himself, to go with the rioters, to somehow leave what was happening there, to find out from cipollone what trump's responses were when he learned about the riot on january 6th. as he sat in the room with him, as you mentioned, observing this whole thing on television, how did he react to that. th

a similar pattern then played out with none other than comey's successor, andrew mccabe. shortly after mccabe took over, trump summoned him to the white house for a meeting where he repeatedly asked mccabe who had voted for in the 2016 election. mccabe replied he did not vote. trump vented his anger at the mccabe through the several hundred thousand dollars in donations that his wife, a democrat receive for her failed 2015 virginia state senate been from the political action. mccabe found the whole conversation disturbing. later 60 minutes it what was he was thinking during that meeting. >> i was speaking to the man who had just run for the presidency and won the election for the presidency and who might have done so with the aid of the government of russia, our most formidable adversary in the world stage, and i was something the trouble me greatly. >> mccabe was so troubled they almost immediately began and obstruction of justice counter intelligence investigation into trump and his ties with russia. >> the next day i met with the team investigating the russia cases, an

joining me now is cnn senior law enforcement analysis, former deputy director of the fbi, andrew mccabe, and cheryl dorsey, retired police officer. andy, what does the body camera footage show you? >> well, kate, what surprises me is not what i see on the body camera footage, it's what i don't see that surprised me. what you see on the footage is confusion, chaos, literally the fog of war that accompanies any critical incident, certainly one that shots are fired. this is very typical. people are amped up, filled with adrenaline, they're out of breath, hard to understand what's happening as they get themselves organized. that you would see in any situation like this. it's what you don't see that's shocking. you don't see anyone taking charge. you don't see anyone exhibiting any sort of leadership, organizing, figuring out what resources, people, and equipment you have and deploying those resources to save hives. none of that happens over the course of an hour and 17 minutes. and it's just a tragic and shocking realization as you watch this -- all of this footage, really. >> absolutely. i

andrew mccabe, let me start with you. it's a heavily edited, we have to remind people, the austin americans statesman edited out the sounds of the children. cnn has taken out the sounds of the actual video was much worse. what's your response? >> it is hard to characterize this as anything other than a complete disaster. it's a total mess from the crisis response perspective. from the very first moments when police officers arrive on the scene you see two, maybe he three go down the hall. the other four stay inexplicably at the end of the hall behind cover. even the texas state active shooter response for school-based officers training that every one of these officers has to have had by this point in time makes it clear that you take everybody that you have when you arrive on that scene and you go down range to address the threat. that is not what they did with the bodies they had. and then the mistakes compound from there. you see one after another as we watch the video. >> commissioner ramsey, obviously it is a difficul

joining us is former deputy director of the fbi, andrew mccabe, also the author of the threat, how the fbi protects america in the age of terror and trump. andrew, let's start with those deleted text from the secret service. the agent said the messages were replaced as part of the advisement replacement program. as an investigator, you think what? >> it raises all kinds of questions, you know the secret service is known for their work protecting the president that they are a federal law enforcement agency, they come under the federal records act. they are obligated to preserve records like email's and text messages as well, so it raises questions as to what were they doing to comply with that? did they responsibly embark on the device replacement pro lose sometimes mistakes happen, but what was the plan, leading into this? and there's a great conflict now between what the service is saying in their responses to this and what the ig maintains to congress in their letter yesterday. they said they don't believe that any of the text messages that the ig is looking for were lost but at the
