velena jones nbc bay area news. you know, traffic is flowing again tonight on the richmond-san rafael bridge, but this morning it was a different story. check it out. a five car pileup caused a major traffic jam. it happened just after ten this morning on the westbound lanes of 580. nbc bay area sky ranger overhead as crews towed the cars away. it is not clear yet how the crash happened. fortunately, no one was hurt, but it did temporarily block all westbound lanes. the backup a long one this morning. all lanes reopened about 45 minutes later. it has officially been 100 days since alameda county's district attorney took over for. recalled pamela price. tonight, she's giving an update on the changes she's made in the da's office so far. county board of supervisors appointed ursula jones dixon a district attorney back in january. she says day one, her office rescinded complicated charging directives to clear a huge backlog in charging cases. she also says the office has lost a lot of institutional knowledge, so she re

i'm standing at the bay area.e in this lighter shade of green, which means it's not a strong signal, but there is better than a 5050 chance of at least some measurable rain before we finish the month of may. and as we look at the 8 to 14 day outlook, which takes us into early june, we're right on the edge of that lightest shade of green. so it's still possible that maybe a little bit of additional rain would make its way into the bay area, but it's not going to be enough to erase the rainfall deficit. the seasonal rainfall totals since the beginning of the water year on october 1st. those are pretty much locked in at this point, and we fell short of normal rainfall amounts. even in san francisco, 89% of average, but not bad. close to 20in of rain, but less than 60% of total rainfall for livermore and just over 70% in san jose. santa rosa was the big winner. we had that north to south shift in the big picture pattern, and you can see that even around the bay area, santa rosa picked up 125% of normal rainfall. too b

in sacramento, i'm hilda gutierrez, nbc bay area. we investigate protesting traffic impacts during rush hour. demonstrators were on the richmond-san rafael bridge this morning, asking caltrans to get rid of the bike lane. that lane was put back in 2019 as a pilot program. it takes up one lane of the upper deck of the bridge. now, the bay area council is rallying against the lane, saying drivers need that lane to help ease traffic during the morning commute, one marin county supervisor says since opening that bike lane, traffic incidents have actually increased by 33%. many protesters say they've added an extra hour to their commute in the morning because of this bike lane. this is a huge impact to them and to their families, compromising their quality of life and needlessly wasting 5 to 6 hours a week that they could be spending with their families. meanwhile, supporters of the bike lane say the lower decks third lane on the eastbound side already opens during the evening commute. we see plenty of those waymo cars on our local roads.

kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. very much. chris. we'll have more on that coming up. and our mike inouye, of course, been tracking all of this all morning long for us during today in the bay. and mike, there's still some residual delays even though those trains are up and running now. yeah. because as alicia trost mentioned, you have to get those trains out of the yard and then onto the tracks and out along their way. so still some delays, but nothing major. not like a full stop earlier this mornining again trains are back in service. we're looking at the train tracks by the coliseum station. and here's the extended over toward the oakland extension. hadn't had a problem. we just didn't have anything running in the system. and now it's back again. but look at this from the east bay. a lot of these train lines, a lot of these focus this focus is on the transbay tube, getting you into the city for the morning commute. with these trains offline, a lot of folks went over the bay bridge. so we saw a lot more cars, a lot more backup than we typically do on a friday. now that

here's nbc bay area's velena jones. the death of a two year old boy, now the subject of an investigation into the building kids school in dublin. the boy was found unresponsive at the school last month. some parents still question what happened and welcome the state investigation. it's good. we'll probably have more answers and i mean more. we know it's better because everyone's worried. like we still don't know what happened. what caused it? was the school at fault? were there any preexisting conditions? what happened during that day? dublin police performed cpr on the toddler, but he died at the hospital. in a statement, dublin police services say all members of the building kids school cooperated with investigation, calling the incident tragic but not criminal. nicolotti still feels safe taking his child to the school. it's been good. they've always been helpful taking care of kids. the department of social services is investigating but says they can't comment further. the department has investigated five complaints

the annual bay area fire conference alternates between the east and north bay, and this year, santa rosa hosted the event that draws more than 500 professionals from around the state and nation. it's a chance for firefighters to brush up on their practical skills, like the proper way to break into a steel door to save someone on the other side. the rescue scenarios are taken seriously because a life and death situation is possible on any given day. we talk about firefighters being professionals. so, you know, being a professional athlete, they practice every day. and so we can't ever be too good at our job or job, presents a lot of challenges. but to help in those challenges is an array of technologies that have evolved over the years. one of them is the thermal imaging camera, or tic. it's a handheld device that produces a black and white picture from heat being radiated. in this case, a fire is started in a cluster of shipping containers. normally, the smoke would make vision impossible, but the tic can cut through it to produce a clear picture of what's happening. with these technolog

in portola valley, marianne favro nbc bay area news. new information about a deadly plane crash in southern california today. officials now say that two people and a dog were killed when a small plane went down in simi valley. the pilot, one passenger and a dog were all on the plane and they died. but remarkably, no one on the ground was seriously hurt. the single engine plane was about to land at the nearby camarillo airport wn it crashed into two homes. there were people home at the time, but they got out just in time. firefighters say they were structural and fire damage to both homes. an investigation is underway into what caused the crash. the faa says the type of plane involved is sold in kit form and is usually built at home. the trial against three memphis police officers accused of killing tyree nichols is wrapping up. their defense team rested their cases today. back in 2023, police officers are accused of beating 29 year-old nichols to death during a traffic stop. those former officers, justin smith to darius bean and demetri

the rash of deaths in the bay area is puzzling. researchers plus $1 billion beauty deal involving a popula celebrity skincare brand and an oakland cosmetics company. in the bay. five dead gray whales in the span of five days. nbc bay area sky ranger spotted one of them near the berkeley pier earlier today. this one showed up last thursday, and scientists are still looking into what killed it. we want to show you a map where all the whales were found so you can see it there. the first one showed up a week ago in bolinas, and then the most recent one was spotted over the weekend at alcatraz. right now, it is not clear what killed any of these whales. we do know that this appears to be part of a larger issue, though. so far, 13 whales have died in the san francisco bay area region. scientists did confirm that at least three died of a ship strike. there has also been an unusually high number of whale sightings in the bay area 33 this year, compared to just four last year. so how does all that go together? joining me now is doug mccauley

nbc bay area's thom jensen explains.this has been a seemingly almost impossible task for the owner to even begin to undertake. he has 15 million pounds of product on the lot here, which stretches a quarter of a mile from the front gate to the back gate. and he says it would take about five months and 30 workers to move all of it. silicon valley granite has been at this location, off highway 101 on north 30th street for a quarter of a century, selling all things granite from headstones to raw slabs for contractors. and then on april 28th, after months of negotiating with santa clara vta, the owner says they were given 48 hours to get out. we never expected this to happen in this country. sheriff's deputies actually came to the granite business to serve papers, but after seeing what it would take to move his entire operation, they gave the owner another week. the issue is simple. the business is right in the path of a bart to san jose extension. today was supposed to be the new eviction day. they got pressure from the publ

let's take a quick look at what's going on for us all throughout the bay area. we head into this afternoon and it's another warm one for us off into our inland areas. upper 70s and lower 80s are in store for us today off into the east bay, with a low 70s widespread throughout wine country. we kicked off this week. nice and cool. sitting in the 60s with rainy skies. we're now halfway through the week, getting close to the weekend right around the corner, and we're starting to warm up and dry up day by day with upper 70s this afternoon all the way into the santa clara valley will continue to warm up. actually, as we head into the next couple days back into the 80s, potentially even some upper 80s and lower 90s. as we head into next week, let's take a look at what's happening for us today. we head into the afternoon hours. we see wind gusts this afternoon around 5:00 up to around 25mph along the coast in san francisco. so breezy near ocean beach. it's definitely breezy all the way up in areas like bodega bay to. we are expecting drier than normal conditions, though,
