laura: for the pbs news hour, i'm laura barron lopez in washington.mna: the latest republican spending measure is likely to undergo substantial changes in the coming days as it winds its way through the house. but currently, it includes a plan to give $1000 to every baby born between 2025 and the end of 2028. it's an idea that was first proposed by economic scholar derek hamilton. here's his brief but spectacular take on so called "baby bonds." > we have the ethos if you just study hard and work hard and make great decisions that one can accumulate wealth. certainly that is beneficial but it is limited if you don't have capital in the first place. growing up in new york city in the 1980's, i could see the differences between the people i corrupt with in bedford stuyvesant versus the ones i went to school with -- i grew up with in bedford stuyvesant versus the ones i went to school with. the individuals in both of the environments, the love, the care, they didn't vary that much, but what did was economic circumstance and what that could afford people.

for the pbs news hour, i am laura baran lopez. - i am laura barron-lopez.o get more perspective on how canada is viewing the first meeting between prime minister carney and president trump, i'm joined by brian clow. he was the deputy chief of staff to former prime minister justin trudeau. and has also served as the executive director for canadian-u.s. relations at the former prime minister's office. these are two men who with her to say have sparred from afar, but they kept a civil tone in this first face-to-face meeting, so how do you look at it? did they do any repair to a damaged relationship or just emerge without additional damage done? brian: i think the canadian goal going into this meeting was to refresh and restart the relationship after a very tumultuous few months since donald trump returned to office. and prime minister carney clearly achieved what he needed to achieve. he did not need to come out of today with a tariff lift or any specific policy outcome. what he needed to do was establish a constructive tone with the president that can lead in
