nicole deantonio, abc news, washington. >> developing news now in the last half hour, hurricane ericca, mexico. overnight, the hurricane strengthened to a category four storm, and it weakened just before making landfall to a category three. a hurricane warning is now in effect for 300 miles of mexico's south pacific coast, from acapulco to puerto angel. the national hurricane center is warning of life threatening storm surge, flooding and high winds, and it comes only two years after the devastating hurricane otis that killed dozens of people. >> in the east bay. a dead whale has washed ashore again. it ended up at a beach near where the san lorenzo creek flows into san francisco bay. according to the marine mammal center, this is not a new whale. it had previously washed ashore in another location. we did see two gray whales wash up near richmond last week. more than 20 whales have washed ashore in the bay area this year. >> state park officials have finalized a plan to rebuild big basin redwoods state park in the santa cruz mountains. the ccu lightning complex fire destroyed all of

that fact is part of a new report released by the county's health department. and as abc seven news reporter anser hassan tells us, it's part of an effort to look at the issue of gun violence, not just as a public safety issue, but as a public health issue. >> over the past few years, on average, three alameda county residents are killed by a firearm every week. 12 are shot and injured. the numbers are based on a new report about gun violence in alameda county. >> many times people think of it as a public safety issue exclusively. and so we wanted to frame it in a way that we can look at gun violence from a public health standpoint. >> kristen clopton is the violence prevention manager at alameda county's department of public health, which authored the report. among the other key findings in alameda county, guns are the leading cause of death among children and young adults. black residents are 33 times more likely to die from gun related homicide than white residents and the county's poorest neighborhoods in west oakland face gun homicide rates eight times higher than th

zach fuentes, abc seven news.. zach fuentes, abc >> thank you. zach. today, san francisco's police commission is set to discuss accepting a multi-million dollar donation to create a brand new facility for its real-time investigation center. that center is where police analyzed drone video and license plate readers. it's been credited with helping make hundreds of arrests. right now, it's housed in the dilapidated hall of justice. crypto billionaire and ripple co-founder chris larsen is offering $9.4 million to move that facility to an empty office near the embarcadero. if the police commission signs off on the donation, the board of supervisors will still need to do the same. a new report is blasting the oakland police department for severe understaffing in public safety. the report was presented to the city council yesterday. it shows the city ranks first in violent crimes and property crimes in the nation when compared to similar sized cities across the country. in 2023, oakland police solved only 6% of violent crimes and only 0.1% of property crimes.

tara campbell, abc seven news. >> okay, tara, thanks very much. w, abc seven news meteorologist sandia patel is tracking the conditions on the fire lines in antioch and sandy. a hot day in the east bay. certainly. and that brush is bone dry. >> that's right, dan. and those two things make for a dangerous situation. you heard the wind, as tara was reporting. here's a look at the current conditions. winds are gusting out of the southwest 39 miles an hour. it is 80 degrees, relative humidity 25%. so it is dry out there. the bay area air quality management district did issue an air quality advisory for contra costa county tonight, as the smoke impacts are being felt around the region, the winds will remain gusty. not just tonight but going into tomorrow. so hopefully those hot spots do not actually spark more brush fires or expand that brush fire as you take a look here. good to moderate air quality right now, but purple air is reporting some poor air quality near that fire. so looking at a live picture from our mount tam cam, you can see that camera i
