we'll tell you how funds in alameda county are being usedal right. we are back time now. 6.25, alameda county leaders have approved funding aimed at expanding access to child care in the community. >> so the board of supervisors unanimously voted this week to distribute funds from measure c which puts nearly a billion dollars toward early-childhood education access. the money will be given through the first 5 alameda county program, which is a nonprofit that supports comprehensive systems for early childhood care. the money will be used for resources like childcare, vouchers and technology, as well as grants to recruit and retain early-childhood educators. and first 5 says that initial grants totaling more than 80 million dollars for child care providers provides have been launched already. the alameda foodbank got a big lift this week, literally. they thanks to a helping hand from the u.s. coast guard. look at this. in a social media post. the foodbank shared that their coast guard besties stepped in to help move some heavy warehouse. rex from their

happening right now alameda county firefighters are walking the streets with a purpose. they want to raise awareness for mental health resources and to honor the memory of one of their own. ktvu james torres is live in oakland, explaining the fire department's mission. good afternoon. james. >> andre. well, this walk makes a lot of sense for this time of the year. it's june, which is men's mental health awareness month, and it's also the six year anniversary marking six years since alameda county fire department's one and only suicide. alameda fire recruits hearing an important message they wish they never had to hear. >> we want to stress. we don't want to have them in this situation. >> john michael is talking about his situation. his son eric died six years ago by suicide from stresses of the job, a job dozens of these recruits are signing up for. >> we're just doing everything we can to be visible, normalize it and to make it seamless and anonymous. so people just have they just feel empowered to use the resources that we're developing. >> according to alameda county

and these shutoffs are potential for them here in alameda county and santa clara county. also, these shutoffs are precautionary, could impact up to around 1000 customers. and in years past, these public power shutoffs, safety shutoffs used to impact large areas of the bay area. but now, p-g-and-e's says it is working to minimize the impacts to customers. it says this is precautionary and that all of this is considered because of high winds and dry conditions. >> things like dry conditions, windy conditions, vegetation on the ground that make us really concerned for the possibility of a catastrophic wildfire. so if we see enough of those factors come together, we'll turn off the power proactively. >> now, in the counties facing the potential of public safety power shutoffs, around 650 customers in alameda county could be affected 275 in contra costa and about 50 in santa clara county. now, again, we are just finding out that there looks to be a shutoff in contra costa county. it's a little bit ways from pittsburg bay point area, so we're going to work to see how many custo

well, we heard from alameda county firefighters.inging in mental health awareness and letting them know what resources are available to keep their mental health in check. it's also meant to honor the life of one of their fallen firefighters, eric michael. and according to the fire department, he is the only alameda county firefighter to take his own life after doing the job for more than ten years. organizers, including michael's widow, say the fire department's efforts to bring awareness and prevention go a long way. >> doing things like this kind of helps me still stay a part of it, but i also i love these guys and i want to make sure that they don't, i guess, fall a succumb to ptsd the same way my husband did. >> research from alameda county shows 20% of firefighters meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress at some point in their careers. the walk here this morning will start at the fire department headquarters here in dublin. firefighters will stop at other stations along the way before ending at their station in san leandro.
