originally, bart blamed the fire on an aging circuit breaker, but now bart says it was actually startedby a cable used to power the trackway. that cable became frayed, then touched the ground, creating a power surge that fueled the fire. joining us now is investigative reporter jaxon van derbeken jackson. the distinction to the average person between a circuit breaker and a frayed cable doesn't sound that big. why is this significant? well, both. if you have a cable that becomes in contact with the ground, you're going to have a lot of power surging into the ground. now, the circuit breaker you would think would stop that because that's what it's designed to do. but in this case, bart circuit breakers have a great demand that they have to meet. and as a result, this small surge wasn't enough to trip the breaker. and that's the concern that these small surges can be quite problematic and yet be missed by the circuit breaker, which designed is to safeguard the system. has this situation happened in the past with the frayed cable not tripping the circuit breaker and causing a fire? well, w

there's a major delay right now for much of the bart system. nbc bay area sky ranger over the bay fair bart station in san leandro. you can see a lot of police there. it's closed because of a medical emergency. and now investigation. this is bringing delays along the orange berryessa line. so that's impacting riders from berryessa and san jose to richmond. there is a bus bridge right now for riders between bayfair, san leandro and hayward. we're going to keep an eye on the situation, and as soon as this problem gets resolved, we'll keep you posted. a top bart engineer today blamed the settings on key equipment for sparking a fire at the san leandro station last month. that fire caused a system wide meltdown, shutting down the green line for five days. now, bart's chief infrastructure delivery officer told the board today that when a power line surged and tripped a circuit breaker, the system automatically restored the power, which eventually sparked the fire. he says that's how the system is designed to keep trains running. now, during normal f

a lawsuit against bart is moving forward. one year after a woman was pushed in front of an oncoming train and killed. it happened at the powell street station in san francisco last july. corazon dondon was taking bart home after traveling from her job at union square at a hotel there. prosecutors allege trevor belmont shoved her into an oncoming train. police arrested the 49 year old suspect on the station platform. the 74 year old victim's nephew and six siblings have filed this lawsuit, alleging bart faregates and overall platform design are dangerous. we reached out to bart for comment and have not yet heard back. convicted killer nima momeni is expected to return to court today. the appearance could be to schedule a new date for sentencing. many refused to appear in court during his last hearing back in february, and ktvu has learned that he has a new attorney who may try to appeal his conviction. he was found guilty of second degree murder last december for stabbing and killing cashapp founder bob lee in san francisco in
