reporting live, bob redell, nbc bay area news. thank you bob. in iran, overnight, a firing of new wave of missile attacks on israel. it all comes as israel claims it achieved air superiority over tehran and could fly over the iranian capital without facing major threats. nbc's matt bradley has the latest on the ongoing conflict from tel aviv. yeah, we're now in the fourth day of these attacks between israel and iran. israel kicked it off on friday morning very early with a set of comprehensive, unprecedented attacks against iranian nuclear sites. now, since then, we've seen israel branching out to conventional military sites and now to iran's economic lifeline oil and gas facilities. and that shows a major escalation, as iran has also been pummeling israel with much less effect. we've been seeing the israelis swatting down these projectiles, many of them ballistic missiles and drones, and so far, about two dozen israelis have been killed, all of them civilians on the iranian side, iranian state media has reported that 224 people have been killed

today in the bay's bob redell live for us in san jose this morning. so a lot of folks are not happy about this proposal here. so what are they saying, bob? well, good morning to you, marcus. there are critics of mayor matt mahan proposal here in san jose to arrest people who live on the streets, who refuse shelter repeatedly. they say that this would further criminalize homelessness. so what's happening is later today, the san jose city council is expected to vote on whether or not to approve the mayor's responsibility to shelter initiative, which, if approved, would allow for the arrest or hospitalization of people on the street who refuse offers of shelter three times over an 18 month period. it would also expand outreach efforts and create a new police unit to enforce the policy. the police and fire unions have all voiced their support for the bill. the president of san jose firefighters local two, 30 told us they deal with thousands of fires each year caused by people living on the streets. critics have blasted the plan. not only does it criminaliz

bob redell, nbc bay area news. all right. thanks for the very latest, bob. all right. speaking of fire danger, no plants, no shrubs, no trees within five feet of your home. that is the new rule for people in berkeley's most fire prone areas. the berkeley city council passed its ember proposal, one of the strictest wildfire prevention plans in the state, which includes so-called zone zero standards. that means only non-flammable or hardscape material like gravel within five feet of. structure. plants can ignite. it doesn't really matter what the plant is under the right conditions, dry plants burn, and if you've got burning material very close to your house, your house has a good chance of burning. and here in berkeley, the fuel load as it is in many places, it's the houses and if we can. so we're trying to protect the houses, keep the houses from catching on fire. now, in addition to no plants within five feet, berkeley's ember plan requires vent and gutter covers and for homeowners to move wooden gates away from homes. this applies to the most fire prone areas, like g

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from outside the cal fire station in sunol. and, bob, how will this new money impact cal fire? good morning to laura marcus. we're talking about more full time employees and more stations open year round. now, the cal fire station behind me here in sunol is already staffed year round. but this one you're about to see in the video on top of mount hahamilton over east san jose. that one is not because it's a so-called schedule b station, which is historically shut down during the winter months because there's not enough money to keep it staffed. california state senator dave cortese coauthored a budget item that will direct millions of dollars to allow those scheduled bees to stay open year round. that money was appropriated under the governor's new budget, which goes into effect tomorrow, july 1st. the governor also signed into law a bill that appropriates $39 million this year, $78 million in subsequent years to move roughly 3000 cal fire personnel from part time to full time status. you can't come too soon. we're already seeing

nbc bay area's bob redell is live outside the courthouse in alameda county. bob, i understand you just spoke with the teen's defense attorney. i did. good morning to their kris. we're outside the courthouse here in downtown oakland, where the parents are supposed to be taking place soon. i just spoke off camera with the suspect's attorney, who will be representing him in this case. she described hernandez. garcia is a, quote, very scared. 18 year old says last wednesday, he drove to the store in his mom's car to get snacks, saw a police car drive up close to him, says as, quote, a young brown man. he was triggered by the sight of police and as he left the store, he called his teacher at arise high school here in oakland, where he's supposed to be graduating, who told him to come over to try to calm him down. at one point, his attorney says he saw another police car and garcia hernandez ended up, or hernandez garcia sped off, which triggered that chase by law enforcement, with him eventually losing control and causing allegedly, that fatal collision with anothe

as nbc bay area's bob redell shows us, there's no clear solution to this shortfall. it is not clear what the city of oakland will do to reduce this shortfall within the oakland police department, because the city council has yet to approve the proposed budget for the next couple of yrs. that vote not expected to the end of the month. we'll have more on that in a moment. at yesterday's meeting, the oakland city council agreed to accept the findings of this independent study. the city had hired an outside firm to examine response times by opd, clearance rates of criminal investigations and staffing within the agency. now, the study found that sworn positions within opd declined just over 11% between fiscal year 2021 and 25, while departmental vacancy rates actually improved from 16% in 2021 to almost 12% in 2025. the study found that 678 officers that are currently employed, that that number is not enough to fight crime adequately within the city, report recommends hiring roughly 200 more officers. city council members addressed the challenges oakland faces in trying t

bob redell, nbc bay area news. new at 11. the federal government is hiring again as wildfire and hurricane seasons begin. the reversal comes months after hundreds of national weather forecasters were fired. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, noaa, posted those jobs this week. that is the parent agency of the national weather service. elon musk's doge targeted both for budget cuts, but critics warned weather service positions were cut too sharply. we want to get a look at our forecast. we have to have scientists in order decipher that data. yeah, especially as we approach hurricane season and things get going there. so hopefully they do bring back a lot more people. let's get a look at what we're seeing here. as we mentioned, wildfire season has begun and we are starting out with some extremely dry conditions. when we take a look at how much moisture content is within the grasses that we have around the bay area, there is a very high fire risk as a result of very low moisture in not only the grasses, but the

bob redell is on brd this morning. ahoy, bob! ahoy there. we are on board a united states coast guard eagle. this is a very unique vessel because it is the only. take a look. tall ship that is in active service in the united states military. it's berthed here at pier 17 in san francisco. this is a training vessel for cadets in the coast guard. it's 295ft long. those masts are. wow, about 147ft tall. people actually have to climb up there. that's part of the training. as they're unfurling the sails, we got lieutenant, junior grade, jordan russell, first class cadet maggie gorman. good morning to you both. why does the modern military need a tall ship? yeah. so the tall ship is our primary means of training future officers of the coast guard. so by having the sails, by having over 190 lines on board, the cadets get that kind of fundamental, basic seamanship. they get to learn all the commands, drive the boat, climb the mast. so it kind of gets down to like the, you know, the original portions of sailing and seamanship. and those are concepts t

reporting live bob redell today in the bay. thank you bob. we know the people of oakland.ke to see more officers on the street. that's right. all right. let's talk about things happening over in berkeley for you. because leaders there are trying to reinforce that the city's message of pride and inclusion. this is all following a recent hate crime incident targeting a transgender woman. so the alleged crime took place last friday. andccording to pacific center, which focuses on lgbtq plus concerns, someone used a bb gun or pellet gun to assault the victim. police did not respond in time to our request for a response, but the pacific center's ceo has given the current mood of the country, says that she's not surprised. the political climate across the nation is anti-trans. it's hostile. the berkeley mayor and city council put out a joint statement saying in part, we do not tolerate hate in berkeley and will not allow fear to extinguish our joy. we empathetically concern. we empathetically condemn the acts of hate and wholeheartedly stand with the lgbtq plus community. our ci

reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. thank you bob, and we'll follow, of course, that court hearing. another follow up for you this morning. a transgender athlete over the weekend shook off recent controversy to take home two gold medals at the state high school track and field championships. abby hernandez is from southern california. she took first place in two events and finished second in another. hernandez shared high jump with two other girls that win and then in the triple jump win, hernandez jumped the farthest. excuse me, but she shared a first place with the girl who did not jump as far as her. now, following a cif rule change, hernandez cannot bump a girl from a placement with a win. now, hernandez was first becoming the attention of the center of attention. this is over the controversy after a post from president trump last week threatened to cut funding if california did not ban transgender athletes from girls sports. a movie the bay area forward on a second chapter for one of our oldest entertainment venues.

nbc bay area's bob redell has more from livermore.t tesla road in greenville road here in the southeastern part of livermore. you can see it's very windy out here. and if you can see in the background, there's a lot of brown and it is warm. these are the reasons why pg&e has begun to do the public safety power shutoffs here in this particular part of alameda county, which means this is a rural area. so you might have some wineries, some people, ranchers, some people who live out in the hills here who might be without power. now you can take a look at the shutoff map from pg&e. power went off in this area within the past couple of hours. earlier this morning before sunrise, there were just over 70 customers up in cocoa county that we're aware of in clayton that lost their power as well. so again, pg&e has been warning about this, saying as many as a thousand customers within alameda, cocoa and perhaps even santa clara could have their power shut off today again, because of these dry, windy, gusty conditions, the concern would be the wi

reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. the son of a firefighter, that's always a hot topic there. all right, bob, thank you. a hiker with bay area ties is telling his survival story. after spending nine days and nights lost in the himalayas. 44 year old samuel benji kikanovic became separated from his hiking group in northern india. his sister says he then got injured. rescuers found him over the weekend, but he was starving and dehydrated. he's expected to fully recover. they shared video of him explaining his physical struggle, at one point trying to make his way towards other hikers, then changing course when he couldn't reach them. then i got thirsty. i had to go back down to the river. he had been walking for nine days with a fractured ankle and a broken wrist and an injured knee. his family is from fremont. they to find him, they had to arrange a private search and cover the expenses. but now that hs been found, they say it was all worth it. let's take a live look outside across the bay area this morning where we're

yeah, today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from outside cal fire station in sunol. ob, talk to us about how this new money is going to impact cal fire. good morning, marcus and laura. we're talking about more full timemployees and more stations that are staffed year round. we're talking about cal fire here for several months out of the year. you look at this video. this is the cal fire station on mount hamilton in the hills above east san jose. it goes dark for several months of the year because it's a so-called schedule b station, which is historically shut down during the winter months because there's not enough money to keep it staffed. well, california state senator dave cortese, he will direct millions of dollars starting in july, which starts tomorrow, a two cal fire. so those schedule b's can stay open year round. we'll also have money that will allow them to move cal fire to move roughly 3000 personnel from part time to full time status come too soon. we're already seeing a lot of vegetation fires in this area that can quickly blow up with a little bit of win
