nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab has what caltrans is saying. the day after those repairs were done, caltrans says crews were able to fix the issue. it took most of the day yesterday and went into the evening commute, impacting a lot of commuters. this is what caused it all. crumbling concrete onhe upper deck of the san rafael or of the richmond-san rafael bridge, it was discovered during yesterday's commute. caltrans quick to close almost all lanes for the emergency repairs, which included cutting a rectangle around the damaged area and replacing it with rebar and concrete. the closures lasted most of the day and went into the evening hours. this morning, caltrans says it is safe to use the bridge. the bridge is structurally safe. there was a major seismic retrofit done to all of our large scale toll bridges in the 90s and the early 2000, and the richmond-san rafael bridge was one of the bridges that that benefited from that, caltrans adds. the richmond-san rafael bridge complies with federally mandated inspections. every two years. they add th

caltrans toll maintenance crews. what they found was unsound cracked piece of concrete on the upper deck of the bridge. they say it's really small, but they have fixed it. the concrete is curing right now. but in the meantime, the following lanes are closed lane to the upper deck, which is westbound traffic. and then lanes 2, 3, of the lower deck that you're eastbound traffic lane. one will remain open in both directions and we'll show you the area that crews have been focusing on. you can see the crack there, but they wanted to make sure this was not even more extensive. so this is the area they're repairing. drivers should expect delays. boy, they know that. all right. all those who are there know that there are delays and people, of course, trying to find other ways to get around. kron four's. sara stinson will have more on the closure coming up on kron. 4 news at 10 and 11. the threat of a devastating wildfire

caltrans is building two animal crossings along i-80 in placer county.al tunnels are designed to protect animals and humans traveling in the sierra. reporter brady halbleib has a preview. >>>>a major construction project along i-80 through the sierra, making traveling safer for drivers while also safer for wildlife. everything. in total, we were looking to improve the safety and mobility in this particular corridor. it's a part of the $146 million monte vista rehabilitation project, which includes upgrading the pavement and the drainage system, along with adding two wildlife crossings located between alta and drum forebay. caltrans chose this area after a three year traffic study revealed a high number of collisions, many involving wildlife like deer, mountain lions, and even bears. and we needed to be able to to provide an avenue that they could go through their normal migratory patterns safely. additionally, caltrans will put up fencing along the highway to funnel the wildlife in the direction of the tunnel. experts say that part is key. we want to pre

we'll track that and i'll check with the caltrans grid. but over here in this area, we had a lot of activity. i'll send it back to you for that. all right. thanks, mike. we want to get to that breaking news developing right now in the east bay, where crews have been working to contain a brush fire. and there's some urgency because it was very, very close to a refinery this morning. today in the bay's bob redell is live for us out there at crockett. this is where the scene just got an update for us. so what can you tell us, can tee is out, is fully contained. you can see behind me the large response that cal fire mobilized for this fire that started a little bit after 3:00 this morning. and as you keep handing over here, you can see we are at the area where we believe the fire started. according to cal fire battalion chief, the cause is still under investigation. but the issue is the fire started in this general area. and actually now we're getting a little bit of sunlight. as you look up, you can see it raced up this very large hill. here

so caltrans right now is closing lanes. we just found out on the richmond-san rafael bridge to make some emergency repairs. two lanes eastbound and westbound are going to be closed for several hours. so that could be a real issue when it comes to the evening commute. caltrans says it found some problems with the concrete on the upper deck. it's basically either chipping or breaking the concrete into layers. and you might remember in 2019, the bridge actually had to be closed when chunks of concrete began falling from the bridge. so right now, not clear if that is the same issue that is causing these lane closures on the richmond-san rafael bridge. we've reached out to caltrans for more info, but drivers are being told to expect delays. vallejo's own e-40 is the latest artist to perform a tiny desk concert for npr. >>one of these rappers going to play? yeah, we. like that. tell the people that 40 water is back. >>yeah. the rapper kicked off the show with da bumble and played other hits like snap your fingers and tell me when

caltrans is looking at how to reimagine the freeway and reckon with its history of racial injustice. the plan is in its early stages. so early, in fact, we don't know the cost of any of the options. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone went to a community meeting where neighbors talked about how to literally build a better bay area. >> interstate 980 goes through oakland. you see that right here. but there's a possibility that that will change in the years to come. the vision 980 study is now being done by caltrans to explore ways the interstate could be transformed. right now, there are three corridor scenarios. >> one of them is enhancing enhancing what is already there without actually removing or adding to the infrastructure. scenario two is covering the roadway, and that's like covering the area downtown where the freeway is depressed. that's an example of that. and parks can go on top of that. for example scenario three is remove the entire freeway. >> and it's that final scenario which would likely be the most expensive. that is the most popular among oaklanders we talked with

at last check, caltrans says all westbound lanes have reopened. as we again give you this live picture of the traffic headed that direction over to marin county. two eastbound lanes are also open. the third lane remains closed for monitoring. that's not what the bridge looked like, though. hours ago, drivers were stuck in traffic all afternoon and into the evening commute and beyond. this is what it looked like from sky fox, where drivers were heading to the east bay from marin county. caltrans says the closure was due to the emergency repairs they needed to do, and they posted this photo here showing the concrete on the upper deck that it started to crumble, causing traffic to be restricted in both directions. one driver we spoke to said the delays added way more than an hour to his commute. >> for about an hour and 20 minutes. so it's, you know, it's quite a bit. i usually it takes me an hour to get home to santa rosa. now it's going to be like a three hour delay. so we've just got to bear with it. >> caltrans says the repairs were done just in

aspects that people like of each of these, to come up with the final vision for the corridor. >> caltrans hopes to have a preferred vision decided by the community this coming fall, so that they can start looking into the logistics and feasibility of that very scenario. san francisco has a has suspended a program that allows community members to request traffic calming design out there on their streets. now first reported by the chronicle, the program started back in 2013 and allowed the city to work with the community to install speed bumps, concrete islands and other designs to slow traffic, with the intention of making the streets safer. but the increasing number of requests has amounted to a backlog of about 300 cases, putting the strain on the program. this also comes as sf mta faces a looming budget crisis. sf mta officials say the program could reopen in the future and will stop taking applications. on july 1st. san francisco pride has undergone many iterations over the years. coming up now, the san francisco opera house is putting together a show highlighting moments in lgbtq hist

caltrans emergency bridge repair work. mid-span. after a small hole was discovered on the upper deck monday morning. >> we had some concrete spalling or what people would think of as a pothole about three inches wide, but it kind of made its way all the way through to about a one inch hole on the bottom. >> it caused some concrete to fall onto the lower bridge deck. caltrans says there was no reports of injury or damage to cars. >> they'll be cutting that concrete out shortly. then they'll be placing formwork on the lower portion of the bridge. that's why you see a scissor lift out there right now. that formwork will be up. they'll go ahead and make the pour. it's going to take 4 or 5 hours for the concrete to set up. so we're not going to have the upper deck all the way back open until later tonight. >> back in 2019, there were three incidents of falling concrete. caltrans says that wasn't a pothole. it was due to failing joints where two sections come together. officials say that issue was addressed and repaired. >> the richmond c

now, at last check, caltrans said one westbound lane does remain closed.s is a live picture of that westbound traffic where you can see it's gotten a lot calmer. two eastbound lanes are also now open. a third lane does remain closed for monitoring monitoring. but it was a very, very different story during the peak commute hours. let's show you what skyfox was showing us as it flew over the bridge. this was just after 5:00 today. you can see that long line of drivers heading to the east bay from marin county. looks like a parking lot. the emergency repairs began about noon, when caltrans said crews discovered some of the concrete on the bottom of the upper deck. as you can see from that picture, it was crumbling and it was determined to be unsound. the repair work led to lane closures in both directions, which for some drivers meant an extra long commute. >> for about an hour and 20 minutes. so it's, you know, it's quite a bit. i usually it takes me an hour to get home to santa rosa. now it's going to be like a three hour delay. so we just got to bear with

caltrans has been working to improve this roadway through sacramento, but tonight we're learning thisehind schedule and over budget. the project, known as fix 50, was supposed to be done this july as in next month. now, caltrans says it won't be ready until next summer, and the total bill is expected to reach $529 million, up from 483 million bucks. the agency says weather conditions and crashes have caused delays. a fleet of high tech air mapping vehicles will soon be rolling through california neighborhoods in hopes of ultimately improving air quality. specially equipped cars will monitor the air in 64 communities across the state, literally mapping pollution block by block. the first of its kind program is a partnership between a company called aclima and the air california air resources board. the data gathered will help guide air quality improvement efforts in communities like rodeo. people we talked to there say they're eager to get a better sense of what the air quality is in their area, particularly because they live near that local refinery. children are growing up next to to
