harvard is perhaps the most high-profile university to be caught up in the rows. it's hard to measure the exact contribution that universities make to the us economy, by the time you account for everything from student accommodation to the scientific breakthroughs they accomplish and the innovation they drive. but one indication of their importance is the nearly $1 trillion worth of revenue they brought in, in 2022. that's around 4% of the entire us economy. a major vulnerability is that around $60 billion of their research and development funding came from the us federal government, and president trump is using that as leverage to force change. on top of that, the more than 1.1 million international students that he's now cracking down on contribute an estimated $43.8 billion a year to the us economy. as with other policies, president trump has said a number of different things about what his crackdown will entail and why he's doing it. they're going to teach remedial math at harvard. no, wait a minute. so why would they get in? how can somebody that can't add or

harvard, the university of california president and all 10 chancellors submitted an amicus brief to harvard in support of harvard and unc's affirmative action policies, writing that despite years of extensive efforts, quote, "uc struggles to enroll a student body that is sufficiently racially diverse to attain the educational benefits of diversity." what do you make of the uc leadership, arguing the opposite side of their own policies, in that case? - well, what is the point of a college education? i mean, i guess the problem here is that the schools have one agenda. they wanna make their campuses look like america. they think it helps their reputation. i'm more interested in whether it benefits the students. i want more thriving black college students. - yeah. - these schools want window dressing. they want a color-coded campus that is racially balanced for, i don't know, their aesthetic sensibilities, but to me is not what college should be about, and the reality is that not only in an era prior to these policies did we see college completion among blacks rising, we have state after state

celebrating harvard reunions. instead, alumni, staff, faculty, and the administration of the school are processing the latest move from the trump administration. the president just signing a proclamation that would effectively bar international students from being able to come back across the us border to be part of harvard classes and programs. this is essentially seen as another attempt at what we just saw stop here, which was the administration trying to end harvard's certification so they could have international students here on campus. that effort is on hold thanks to the judge. so now the president is trying this in another route. this would impact 27% of the harvard student body. that's what the international student community here represents, not just at the undndergradua level, but at the graduate level in labs and all kinds of programs and jobs here in the cambridge and greater boston area. it's part of the larger culture war that the trump administration has been waging against harvard, and really all

who comes to harvard? the rest. >> of it you can just get online. >> and, chris, of course, there's always the argument that having people from all over the world is part of the educational experience, as you just heard from that alum there. but international students and people, they make up 27% of the harvard community here. they also bring an immense amount of money into cambridge and boston area. they contribute to life saving research. i've spoken to people who work in genetics labs, in quantum physics labs here that are staffed in large part by people who came from outside of the united states, but were so eager to be part of our amazing educational system here. and we're hoping to stay and can continue to contribute to american companies. so the impact people are concerned about here, it goes far, far beyond what's just happening on this campus. it could have economic impacts for all of us around the country. at least that's the view of the administration here. and harvard is calling this move illeg
