jake. >> yeah, it's incendiary language to say the least. paula reid, when do we expect a ruling from the judge in the case of california, the state of california, suing to try to stop the trump administration from using the california national guard and the u.s. marines to keep order during these ice raids? >> well, jake, the judge said he will rule very soon, perhaps as soon as tonight on this high stakes question of whether the president can federalized national guard troops over objections from a state governor. now, earlier this week, as you noted, the state of california sued over this issue. they asked for an immediate block on trump's plan to do this. and they they the judge declined to do that. he said he wanted to hear oral arguments from both sides before making his decision. so it's notable that most of what we heard from today's hearing was the judge talking and throwing out hypotheticals. this is a judge charles r. breyer. he is the younger brother of justice. retired justice

jake sullivan served as n.s.a. under president biden for the whole of the last presidency, 2021-2025. jake, i want to dive straight into it. such an auspicious day for us to be talking about national security. we've all been talking about it all morning. looks like we're going to see historic talks today between ukraine and russia. do you welcome this? are you pleased to see this happening? mr. sullivan: i spent a lot of time in the transition with various officials in the trump administration and we spent a lot of that time talking about ukraine. what i said to them was we are trying to tee you up for effective diplomacy with leverage. so in the months before we left office, we sanctioned russia's oil sector. we surged weapons to ukraine. we seized the proceeds of russian assets and gave them to ukraine. all steps we took to put ukraine in the best position on the battlefield so this administration and the ukrainians would be in the best position at the bargaining table. i said before i left office, 2025 should be

jake. yes. senior iranian officials just just messaged me sort of a statement saying, and i'm paraphrasing here a little bit, saying the iranian armed forces operations against what they call the zionist regime positions will continue. so the iranians are saying, what's going on right now? this is not the end of it. this regime, as they put it, is facing a dark night ahead. obviously, the iranians insinuating that there's more strikes to come and they could take the entire night. the iranians also, once again, this source stating the claim that they claim that an israeli jet or several israeli jets were shot down. obviously impossible to independently verify all of that. but they also say that several drones and other projectiles were shot down by their air defense forces as well. so the iranians, seemingly right now in a more of a bullish mode than they were before, making some stronger statements. this, of course, also comes, jake, after iran's supreme leader, ayatollah ali khamenei, came out

>> hi, jake. well, there is actually. >> a lot of air activity. >> that we've been witnessing since we got here on the ground into tehran. there's a bunch of anti-aircraft gunfire that we've been seeing. there were also a lot of thuds that we've been hearing as well. it's unclear whether or not those are israeli airstrikes or maybe some sort of interceptions or something, or possible anti-aircraft missiles being fired out by by the iranians. however, when we were driving into tehran, we also saw more of that anti-aircraft fire and what seemed to be either some sort of larger missile launched or possibly a larger anti-aircraft missile being launched and as far as the mood here on the ground is concerned, we are seeing that there's very few people actually still here in tehran. there's a lot of people who appear to have left. there was a good amount of traffic going out of the city and really all the stores that we went past as we were coming into the city were all closed. it's a different picture,

indeed, jake. just to remind viewers who are just joining us on bbc news, because it is a significant development that we are bringing to you, and that is that president trump has confirmed us involvement in strikes on iran. a post on truth social saying earlier that the us had completed a very successful attack on three nuclear sites in iran, including fordo, natanz and esfahan, all planes now outside of iranian airspace, mr trump saying that a full payload of bonds was dropped on the primary site of fordo. as we are showing you now, a second post on truth social saying fordo is gone. it is important to remind viewers that we have not had any confirmation of what the president is saying there. we don't know yet from iranian state tv, which is a likely source, i would say, that fordo nuclear site has indeed gone. what we do know so far is only, really, what we're getting from a social media post from the president, which in many ways, i suppose, is typical of the way messages are now communicated.

jake. >> also at that press conference, you. >> saw defense secretary pete hegseth standing over the president's shoulder. he came out and forcefully downplayed this report. and what it found, even though it was done, i should note by the pentagon's intelligence arm here. and essentially, they were saying that they still believe that the damage here was quite severe. we've since seen statements follow from the director of national intelligence, tulsi gabbard, and from the cia director, john ratcliffe, as well. and something that the president told me was that that they have had eyes on the ground. he didn't say if they were iranian, israeli or american eyes that were on the ground assessing the damage of these strikes. jake. but he did talk about them bringing in more intelligence since this initial initial, early preliminary report had been issued. so that is notable. but also, jake, they have continued to come out against this report railing against it. and the president actually, as he's

i'm jake tapper. we're going to begin with the breaking news in our world lead with this live look at the skies above tel aviv, israel. iran this evening has begun retaliating for israel's unprecedented strikes on its military leadership and its nuclear weapons program. iran saying that israel is now, quote, facing a dark night ahead. last night and today, israel strikes hit iran's nuclear facilities and killed the commander in chief of iran's revolutionary guard, plus other top military brass. and now iran has launched a barrage of. missiles toward israel. this was the moment that the first wave of iranian missiles hit tel aviv, some missiles being intercepted, but at least one striking a building, sending a huge plume of smoke into the air, lighting parts of this building on fire. a second wave of missiles arrived a short time later, raining down over the population center of tel aviv. two sources in israel tell cnn that the united states and other countries helped israel intercept some of the irani
