the mayor was in japantown today, joined by police and fire unions, all voicing their support. when we deal with thousands of fires a year outdoors because people are not living in proper conditions, there's a small but significant subset of our unhoused population who are suffering, and it generates a lot of calls for service. homeless advocates have blasted the mayor's plan, saying it criminalizes homelessness and noting that there aren't enough shelter beds for everyone on the streets currently. but business owners here say it's needed. every member of my family has been assaulted, sometimes viciously, by unhoused individuals suffering from addiction or mental illness. tamiko ross is the president of the japantown business association and says something's got to give. she notes her father was hit for asking someone on the streets to not urinate in front of kids. we are exhausted and we are afraid for our safety. as someone who is fifth generation japantown and whose grandparents returned to san jose after world war ii incarceration camps. i struggle with the decision to stay

. - we now take you to a legacy business, an institution in san francisco's japantown. hardware has been around for 100 years. our sooji nam introduced us to the family who built it all. (gentle music) - [sooji] ever since graduating college, philip ashizawa dedicated his life to his family's business, soko hardware in japantown san francisco. - this is our normal hardware tool section. - [sooji] along the 1600 block of post street, soko hardware has been a pillar in the japanese community for a century. ashizawa's grandparents first opened soko hardware in 1925 at another site a couple blocks away from the japan center. but things quickly changed. - he unfortunately had to shut down in the early '40s or mid '40s because of the war, and they were forced to go to incarceration camps. my parents and my grandparents went to topaz, utah. - [sooji] after his family survived the interment camps during world war ii, they came back to san francisco, and ashizawa's father took the helm by opening the soko hardware store of today, - my father was able to build this store. - [sooj
