jon lapook joins us now. jon, people using the word breakthrough for this, does it warrant that?lapook: this is huge. i remember my first patient with hiv/aids, march of 1981, first bed on the left, he died, and so did every single patient with hiv i saw for years. then we had these new drugs that were effective and the concept of taking a pill every day to prevent hiv/aids. the problem was people weren't compliant. they weren't taking it or it was hard to get it to people, and there was a stigma associated with taking it. now you have an injection twice a year that's more than 99.9% effective at preventing hiv/aids in people at high risk. >> maurice: what are the obstacles that remain here, jon? we are hearing that cost is super high. >> dr. lapook: yeah, i spoke with a spokeswoman from gilead. she said it is going to be about $20,000 a year at list price. but they are making all sorts of efforts to make it more widely available to everyone. but the problem, of course, in the united states is we have decreased support from federal programs, both inside the united states and abro

for the moment, jon, thank you very much indeed. let's go to ione wells, covering events in israel for us. ione, what is the reaction in israel to what we have been hearing about these iranian attacks on this us base in qatar? they have continued carrying out further strikes on iran. they see this sort of wider target as something they need to continue doing. they have said just this evening as well that they had been striking for their military targets including the headquarters of the iranian revolutionary guards, but also other targets they say are associated with the regime including a prison which it is understood is where various political prisoners were detained in iran, for example people who had opposed the iranian leadership. israel has essentially said its military is continuing to strive for these different targets in iran this evening, will continue to do so and there is no sign that events that have taken place this evening have changed that. the big question now really, will iran carry out further retaliation, both to

and jon butcher was really clear in what he said today.there was a plea to stop, of course, because there have been many of those over the past couple of days. but he said, look, if you were involved in this violence, we're going to come after you. we will arrest you and we will prosecute you. and jon boutcher, just reading about the briefing that he's just given to all journalists a little while ago. i mean, he sounds, he's been quite explicit in terms of how he is labelling what he thinks this is. i don't mean he's using swear words. i mean just the words he's using. yeah. look, i think that's really fair. we have heard from other police officers earlier this week who have called what is happening racist thuggery. they've come under a lot of criticism for using words like that over the past couple of days. but, you know, jon boutcher really doubled down on that today and said that he could see no other reason for these crimes than racism. he was really, really direct about that. and he had, i suppose, a message for diverse communities in

i'm jon scott in new york.appears to be the first detention of a protester in los angeles. you can see on the other side of that silver minivan, a federal agents have grabbed somebody, have taken a protester down and appeared to be putting cuffs on that person. we don't know the reason for it. we don't know what that person will be accused of, of having done. but things are very tense in los angeles right now. president trump has ordered in the national guard and federal agents, ice agents and other federal agents are guarding the federal courthouse there. but los angeles police, we are told, are not anywhere nearby. and that has to be a decision that has been made at the highest levels of the police department. we don't know what officers themselves are thinking, but the law enforcement there, outside the federal courthouse is being left entirely to federal agents. and you can see things seem to be very much on edge right now. it had been fairly peaceful for most of the afternoon, although there was an outburs

let's go to our chief washington correspondent, jon karl. jon, you've actually been in touch with president trump, speaking with him over the past couple of weeks about a variety of different issues. this idea of the president warming up to the concept, the possibility of striking iran directly. do you have any sense of how quickly that developed and where it came from? >> well, he told us that he was going to make this decision at the last second. i don't think that was quite what happened here. but this came together incredibly quickly. and this is, without question, the most consequential decision donald trump has ever made. and where this goes, will this be consistent with the promise that he made when he first got in to politics, when he first became a presidential candidate, and he talked about ending forever wars? the question now is, did he just possibly take the first step towards ending what has effectively been a forever war, which is united states adversity with iran, something that goes back to the hostage crisis and the seizing

that has profound consequences -- jon: important policy point. a lot of -- are we going to destroy tens of millions of dollars, is ai scary. a lot of people are scared with disruption. i'm very excited because i see it being his inflationary and create more jobs. how do we explain this to people how do we expend this is a good thing for the country? a lot of people are going to attack this and try to stop it. marc: luddites are wrong, neil luddites are wrong for the reason they are always on, we have not been in an era of fast particular than technological change, we have been in an era of slow technological change and slow growth. if ai works in the way people hope or fear it is going to, it will accelerate economic growth. if it is just software, it will make this the much better off. it will make san francisco and europe and austin much better off, it will not and's -- but it will not answer what happens on the countryside. you need to get to the next thing, you need to make ai hardware as well as software. and you are right back to the same p

jon, thank you for being here.f course, have spent the day saying that this is a catastrophic step toward authoritarianism. what does this ruling mean for our democracy, in your view? >> i think it's a prelude. i think this is the first chapter of what could be as the year goes on, as the next term goes on, a far more severe and serious crisis, which would be an attack, a frontal attack on the 14th amendment, which is foundational to rebuilding the country after the civil war, but not rebuilding it in the way it was, but actually trying to realize the implications of the declaration of independence. it was an attempt to not create a cast of people who would be less than one of the many, many dark moments on the road to the civil war was the dred scott decision in 1857, when roger tawny, a few days after he had sworn in. james buchanan in 1857, ruled that black people were simply not included in the when all men were created equal. as jefferson put it, and as the framers interpreted it, which was one of the great tr
