oren liebermann is in jerusalem for us. oren, what's the latest? >> well, we just got a statement from defense minister israel katz who says, i want to read this in full here. he says following the state of israel's preemptive strike against iran, a missile and drone attack against the state of israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future. two important parts to that sentence there. first, the defense minister is acknowledging that israel has carried out what he calls a preemptive strike against iran. this is what we've been looking for over the course of the past days. and frankly, something the u.s. has been tracking for several weeks now, the possibility that israel will carry out a strike against iran. there are some social media reports of explosions happening in tehran. unclear what the targets are of those. there's still a lot more information we need there, but israel's defense minister has acknowledged that they have carried out strikes against iran the first time in months that we have seen direct israeli action

oren. the skies over tel aviv lighting up right now. >> this is frankly, what we've been waiting for over the course of the past 18 hours, since the israeli attack on iran first took place. the response that israel will warn could be far larger than what we have seen before. we are just a few minutes ago, we got the alert from israel's home front command and from the israel defense forces to head to bomb shelters. that's where you find us right now. these protective doors around us and in pretty much all directions, are the ways in and out of the bomb shelter here in the basement of the building in which the jerusalem bureau is based here. so as we came down here, we heard the sirens going off. we also heard you describe. coming in and frankly, of intercepts, we just got a heads up from israeli military official that dozens of iranian ballistic missiles are en route to israel. the people of israel have been instructed to remain in bomb shelters until further notice. and then you saw some of

oren. obviously, this fits in with the overall message of the west that the iranian people are a good people, oppressed by the ayatollahs and the iranian regime. >> it's an interesting warning that we see there from prime minister benjamin netanyahu. and before i get going here, it's worth pointing out that we are still in the bomb shelter in which we've spent much of the past hour and a half. the order coming just a short time ago, that we are allowed to leave the shelters, and we will do so in just a moment. but in terms of netanyahu's message, it's not the first time we have seen, talk to or try to talk directly to the iranian people. and his wording is very interesting. he talks about the targets that israel went after nuclear facilities, ballistic missile facilities, which israel sees as an existential threat, and then the top levels of the military command. he stops short of blatantly saying israel's goal is regime change in iran to remove the ayatollah khamenei and have a different l

oren, i do want to start with you. you've been reporting throughout the night, occasionally from a bomb shelter. take us through what's been unfolding in israel and what you expect. >> well, we're now out of that bomb shelter, casey. and back in our bureau here on the third floor in the building from which the cnn office operates here. and it is almost looking back here behind me. a bizarre sight, given how quiet it is. late friday night here in jerusalem. that's because we spent much of the past hour and a half or so in a bomb shelter in the basement, when the israeli military and home front command warned of incoming iranian ballistic missile fires, sending not only us here in jerusalem and in tel aviv, but effectively all across the country into bomb shelters for just about an hour. here, as two barrages of ballistic missiles, dozens of missiles in both cases, according to the israeli military, were incoming. a short while ago, israel's military spokesperson, brigadier general effi duffryn, said there were, in his w

let's go to oren liebermann. now. oren, you've been covering this since the wee hours of the morning as this was playing out. i was watching you overnight. is the attack over? >> the short answer is no. it doesn't look like it is. >> we've been here in the bureau. >> in jerusalem, covering these for. the last ten hours. since the first wave of. strikes occurred, striking the nuclear enrichment facility in natanz and a number of other places across the country. that's where we see that 200 fighter jets hitting 100 targets. but it looks like that number may continue to grow. the idf spokesperson just got on camera a short time ago and put out a statement where he said, the air force continues to strike in iran over the recent hours. and it was prime minister benjamin netanyahu who in his first video statement, said this could continue for days. israel has made clear that it has a number of goals here, including either destroying or degrading iran's nuclear capabilities, as well as taking out iran's top military and nucl

so that's basically the situation we have. >> oren oren liebermann, tell us what you're going through, what you're seeing there. >> well, right now we just hear the car alarms behind us that were probably set off by how loud the sirens themselves are. it doesn't look like there is more incoming at this particular moment, but that's only from our window here on jerusalem. here behind me, i'm still getting red alerts for, for example, beit shemesh, which is a city that's that's just west of us by probably ten, 15 miles or so. so it's possible there are continued incoming missiles simply in other locations across the country. one of the interceptors that we saw was fired off from almost directly behind us. it was incredibly loud, not the explosion itself, which obviously makes a tremendous thunderous boom that you can hear for miles. but the launch itself was quite, quite close to us. and if you look behind us here, it's essentially a straight shot to the knesset, which is israel's parliament, its main government building. potentially that was the target. if not, it looks like that's whe

joining me right now is cnn's jerusalem bureau chief, oren liebermann. oren, what are you seeing or hearing at this hour? what's the latest here? >> well, anderson, it's worth pointing out that this is pretty much the 24 hour mark from where this all started during your show yesterday as we hopped on air at the beginning of the first wave of israeli strikes. that has very much continued, according to iranian state media, with more strikes in and around tehran occurring just a short time ago. meanwhile, we have seen just a short time ago from this very spot, a third wave of incoming iranian ballistic missiles that once again essentially set off red alerts across the country and once again forced many israelis and many citizens into bomb shelters. here we even saw interceptors launched right behind us, saw what appeared to be intercepts, and certainly heard perhaps ten or a dozen or maybe even more intercepts in the skies behind us. those incredibly loud, thunderous booms can be heard for miles, saw falling shrapnel with both israel and iran essentially pr

let's begin with cnn jerusalem bureau chief oren liebermann oren, you've been following every developmentce this story broke. hours and hours ago, israel's first wave of strikes on iran. what are you learning from your sources over there this morning? >> well, it's been about 14 hours since that first wave of strikes was carried out by the israeli air force across iran, not only in the capital of tehran, in multiple neighborhoods there, but also, for example, against the natanz nuclear enrichment facility. several rounds of strikes there, it seems. the first numbers that israel put out in terms of the of the number of jets used 200 fighter aircraft carrying out strikes across more than 100 targets. but that number certainly seems set to rise as the israeli military, that is, the israel defense forces. the idf says this is an ongoing operation, and there may be strikes carried out over the course of several days. israel has said they have gone after not only the sites i just mentioned, but also surface to air missiles. that has effectively paved the way for the israeli air force. it seems
