this is from the controlled burn continuing today in the south bay and south san jose. now, firefighters burned about 30 acres of land. this is in solano county park. yesterday, cal fire conducting that burn as part of the training session with bay area fire departments. training will continue in the same area today between 8:00 this morning and 5:00 this evening. meteorologist kari hall is here tracking those conditions for us out there. and it really is dry out there. kari. it is dry, but they try to get rid of those fuels that could later become a big problem. if we do see some sparks in those areas, and we are already dealing with some wildfire smoke coming in from some canadian wildfires, about 200 of them burning up there. so that's been affecting some of the hazy skies and the air quality that we're seeing in the north bay, as well as the coast and the bay. and relative humidity is high. so that's the reason why the fire weather meteorologist said, okay, today is a good day to do this. the wind is light, humidity is high, which will help them keep that fire under

in the south bay damian trujillo nbc bay area news. after nearly 50 years, the cold case of a young teacher found stabbed to death in the hallway of a san jose high school has been solved. in 1978, diane peterson was killed with a single stab wound to the chest. she was found outside her classroom at branham high the day after school let out for summer, as teachers were cleaning out their classrooms. santa clara county district attorney's office says it now believes that then 16 year old harry nicky nickerson was responsible for her death. the da says they had several witness reports tying nickerson to the crime, including reports that he had carried a knife inscribed with the words teacher, dear, but they couldn't officially tie him to the murder until last month. the da's office says it met with a family member who admitted that nickerson came to their home shortly after the killing and confessed nickerson was not a student at the time, and the motive for the killing is unknown. nickerson died by suicide in 1993. it's both surprising

driving on the south bay's most used roadways will soon look a little different. drivers on a main portion of two popular routes will get a new option to avoid traffic toll lanes. nbc bay area's ian cull joins us now to explain. ian, where are we going to see this change? well, you're going to see it in the coming years along 101 and on 85 for this phase of the project that was announced today, the express lane will be installed along the green line on that map there in the northern part of santa clara county, along 101 to 237, and farther south will be added on the blue line, showing state route 8085 between 101 and 87. now, those carpool lanes will transition to express lanes, so solo drivers can also use them during peak hours for a price. and that price, as you may know, varies depending on how busy the route is. at any given time, the vta will operate them and say that the money will go towards transit projects. officials expect that because the toll lane is open to more people, it will reduce congestion in the other lanes. but we're finding out through survey
