this is from the controlled burn continuing today in the south bay and south san jose. now, firefighters burned about 30 acres of land. this is in solano county park. yesterday, cal fire conducting that burn as part of the training session with bay area fire departments. training will continue in the same area today between 8:00 this morning and 5:00 this evening. meteorologist kari hall is here tracking those conditions for us out there. and it really is dry out there. kari. it is dry, but they try to get rid of those fuels that could later become a big problem. if we do see some sparks in those areas, and we are already dealing with some wildfire smoke coming in from some canadian wildfires, about 200 of them burning up there. so that's been affecting some of the hazy skies and the air quality that we're seeing in the north bay, as well as the coast and the bay. and relative humidity is high. so that's the reason why the fire weather meteorologist said, okay, today is a good day to do this. the wind is light, humidity is high, which will help them keep that fire under

in the south bay damian trujillo nbc bay area news. after nearly 50 years, the cold case of a young teacher found stabbed to death in the hallway of a san jose high school has been solved. in 1978, diane peterson was killed with a single stab wound to the chest. she was found outside her classroom at branham high the day after school let out for summer, as teachers were cleaning out their classrooms. santa clara county district attorney's office says it now believes that then 16 year old harry nicky nickerson was responsible for her death. the da says they had several witness reports tying nickerson to the crime, including reports that he had carried a knife inscribed with the words teacher, dear, but they couldn't officially tie him to the murder until last month. the da's office says it met with a family member who admitted that nickerson came to their home shortly after the killing and confessed nickerson was not a student at the time, and the motive for the killing is unknown. nickerson died by suicide in 1993. it's both surprising

driving on the south bay's most used roadways will soon look a little different. drivers on a main portion of two popular routes will get a new option to avoid traffic toll lanes. nbc bay area's ian cull joins us now to explain. ian, where are we going to see this change? well, you're going to see it in the coming years along 101 and on 85 for this phase of the project that was announced today, the express lane will be installed along the green line on that map there in the northern part of santa clara county, along 101 to 237, and farther south will be added on the blue line, showing state route 8085 between 101 and 87. now, those carpool lanes will transition to express lanes, so solo drivers can also use them during peak hours for a price. and that price, as you may know, varies depending on how busy the route is. at any given time, the vta will operate them and say that the money will go towards transit projects. officials expect that because the toll lane is open to more people, it will reduce congestion in the other lanes. but we're finding out through survey

and novato, right near the bay and certainly holding on strong for the coastal areas, while the south bay and east bay would be under sunshine. that's at 10:00 tomorrow morning, and then through the afternoon we'll get in on sunny skies everywhere except the coastline. this fog is coming in and coming in strong. so it's going to be a little bit chillier here. as we roll through tomorrow morning. you're going to definitely need some sort of a jacket as you head out the door. 54 here in the tri-valley down to the south bay, we got you to 56 over to san francisco. go 55 and for the north bay coming in at 53. then, as we've seen thehe past couplef days, we should be on a decent climb as we head through the afternoon. that's going to bring us up to 83 in milpitas, 80 in san jose, out here to the east bay. got you to 73 in vallejo, 84 in pleasanton and back here to hayward, 75 coastal areas in the peninsula. you'll go a few degrees cooler with the foggy breeze staying put. this leaves us at 64 in daly city and 77 here in redwood city up to san francisco, 66 in the mission and 58 in the marina.

doubling to improve officer safety in the south bay is getting the thumbs up from cops. ed putting two officers in patrol damian trujillo reports,the bay officers say with fewer cars on the street, those 911 calls are piling up. there are roughly 80 officers citywide on every shift in san jose, 80 officers to protect the city of almost a million people. recently, in an effort to improve officer safety, the department started experimenting with a plan to put two officers in one patrol car. but officers say the effort to solve one issue has created another. it's a recipe for disaster as we head into the summer months. sergeant steve slack is the president of the police union. he says with fewer overall cars in the field, officer calls for service are now piling up. for example, one neighborhood might have eight officers assigned to it, but only four patrol cars in service. we obtained these screenshots from some of those patrol car computers over the last week. it shows the calls that are still waiting for a police response, and we're told they're so backed up. those calls

let's go to the south bay. votes are still being counted in the race for san jose's district three city council seat. anthony dios leads with 64% of the counted votes. gabby chavez lopez has 36% in this special runoff election. the next update is expected tomorrow. torri huske is the planning commission chair who just barely took second in the primary, where lopez was the frontrunner. he has been endorsed by mayor matt mahan. now, district three is in the downtown corridor. this is the race to replace disgraced councilmember omar torres, who resigned right before being arrested for sexually assaulting a minor. progress, but still a long road ahead. san jose mayor matt mahan says new numbers on homelessness in santa clara county show there's still a lot of work to do. the numbers come from the point in time homelessness count, released this week. the total number of people experiencing homelessness is up 8% since the last count in 2023, but the numbers also show a 30% increase in people using shelters. that line

parts of the east bay and south bay, but you can see how it just kind of hangs on around the bay. san francisco and our beaches even through the afternoon. looks like we're not going to get much in the way of sun here near the bay and also the coast. but it is june after all. they call it june gloom for a reason. and many of you at the coastline, like when this foggy weather starts to return. so looks like tomorrow you're going to get your way here and you'll get that nice chilly weather. we'll start it off with temperatures in the 50s widespread across the bay area. really doesn't matter where you are. we're going to be down here to 55. in the east bay. you can see similar san francisco 53 and the north bay at 52. daytime highs, i think overall should still be able to make a pretty good rebound despite that chilly breeze. so down here in the south bay we're going to get up to 77 in cupertino, 78 in san jose. but all in all, everyone dropping a little bit cooler tomorrow. you'll see from some of those upper 80s we had in concord and antioch, we're down into some low 80s vallejo 72

let's take a look at those temperatures down here across south bay. got you to 76 in san jose, 80 in los gatos over to the east bay. we have 74 vallejo, 83, antioch, 79. in livermore, 60 right near the bay. and we'll find more of those 50 to 60, half moon bay to daly city, palo alto, 77. no chance of 70 in san francisco. but i do have the mission at 65, in the marina at a cold 56. but that's too cold for you. tomorrow you got the option to go to the north bay. just head up here to wine country, upper 70s and low 80s. so as we move this forecast into the next ten days, check out this these numbers here we'll go to some upper 80s and about 90 by next tuesday and wednesday. not going to last long though. we should drop it after that. and it's all because we continue to see those upper level areas of low pressure. so we have a total of three of them the next ten days. and that's why our numbers look so great. so what is all this going to mean for our fire danger. well the results pretty good here. next ten days we'll still have some elevated fire danger. w

the ride a little bit, making your connection to 80 for the either the east bay or down into the south bay. laura. thanks so much, cinthia. well, happening today in san francisco, pushback against proposed budget cuts. opponents fear it may even lead to a new wave of homelessness on the streets today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. and ginger mayor daniel lurie has already warned that these painful cuts are necessary to close the budget gap. why are they getting so much pushback now? well, good morning, laura. mayor lurie has been working to close an $800 million budget deficit over the next two years. and while, as you said, it has been clear that cuts are necessary, that they need to be made, advocates for civil legal aid say they should be spared because it's going to create much of the same problem that the city is already trying to solve. and that is the message protesters will try to send today to the mayor when they hold a vigil on the steps of city hall urging the mayor to save civil legal aid. supporters say the $4.2 million cut will

mike has a look at what's happening in the south bay. kari we're going to start in the south bay. we don't usually. usually east bay has more activity. we are looking at some slowing on the sensors. south 17 heading down from highway 85 through los gatos, all the way down toward the summit. there was a gentle slow drive showing up, and there was roadwork that should be cleared just about now. looks like it has. so i was going to point out what was going on. it's cleared. the good news this will not happen again today. this morning there's no southbound closure scheduled. caltrans sent me that notification yesterday saying they're done for the week. next week it will be northbound where we saw all the slowing southbound. the northbound side shouldn't see as much traffic during the day. and i'll remind you next week there is slowing as a crew should be clearing through richmond. we'll track that and i'll check with the caltrans grid. but over here in this area, we had a lot of activity. i'll send it back to you for that. all right. thanks, mike. we want to get to that breaking news d

our ian cull shows us how it's hurting veterans in the south bay. but let's begin with tempers flaring in san francisco after ice agents returned to the bay area immigration courts today. they were again there to detain people showing up for their hearings. but this time, community organizers responded with protests and at least one direct confrontation. some people outside the san francisco hearing swooped in on that minivan. you see right there that agents used to detain someone. it was one of at least four detentions we saw today. by midday, hundreds of people had turned out to protest the action, forming picket lines, as you see right here at the entrances to the building. and as the afternoon hearings were about to start, judges announced all additional hearings would be suspended for the day. the judge announced that he had just received an email, that they were closing the court, and we all had to leave. so for our client, they're going to reschedule her to come back another day. immigration attorneys claim people showed up for what has tradit

happening today in the south bay, a pivotal vote that may allow san jose police to arrest the unhoused who repeatedly refused shelter. today in the bay's bob redell live for us in san jose this morning. so a lot of folks are not happy about this proposal here. so what are they saying, bob? well, good morning to you, marcus. there are critics of mayor matt mahan proposal here in san jose to arrest people who live on the streets, who refuse shelter repeatedly. they say that this would further criminalize homelessness. so what's happening is later today, the san jose city council is expected to vote on whether or not to approve the mayor's responsibility to shelter initiative, which, if approved, would allow for the arrest or hospitalization of people on the street who refuse offers of shelter three times over an 18 month period. it would also expand outreach efforts and create a new police unit to enforce the policy. the police and fire unions have all voiced their support for the bill. the president of san jose firefighters local two, 30 told us they deal with thousands of fires each ye

let's start in the south bay 70s and 80s later today 83 in los gatos, 81 in san jose. as up to 76 this afternoon. that feels nice as we head up along the peninsula, 60s and 70s. around the bay shoreline along the coast. it's cloudy right now, a little bit of afternoon sunshine, not a lot, but upper 50s to near 60 degrees brighter in san francisco today compared to yesterday. we did see some sunshine downtown. we'll see that sunshine a little bit more as you head closer to sunset. richmond districts today. mid and upper 60s for daytime highs in the north. bay 6070 along the coast, 80s and 90s and our warmest valleys today. above average for this time of the year. we have clouds right now across parts of the east bay. we'll get sunshine here later this morning and temperatures really nice for a lot of us will settle in the mid 70s this afternoon and then inland. warmer than yesterday, low 80s to the low 90s with full sunshine and good air quality overnight tonight it's a similar sky. coastal clouds, patchy fog around the bay shoreline, clear skies elsewhere and overnight

the 50s as you step out the door, and then head for the low 80s in the tri-valley and parts of the south bay, while most of the inner bay will be in the low to mid 70s and up to 81 degrees in napa today. while we'll see in the upper 60s in san francisco and palo alto. look for a high of 79 degrees. we will see more weather like this. we'll talk about it more coming up in just a few minutes. but, mike, you have a crash reported in the south bay. i do. kari highway 101. is the freeway impacted? but apparently this crash just learned from chp. the crash is a vehicle off the roadway. crash happened some time ago and the vehicles flipped over. but there's nobody inside. no injuries reported and no impact to the traffic traveling north past the area. you may find a tow truck if they have to clear it before daylight hours. otherwise they may wait until the afternoon until after the morning commute. if they need to block off any lanes, i'll continue to track that. meanwhile, as you would expect this monday morning, things are very calm with green sensors all around the bay. just a bit of slowing out

we'll actually see some sunshine here to begin for the south bay and the north bay. and then those low clouds here across the bay and at the immediate coastline. but look at this. by the time we head into 9:00 in the morning, most areas under sunshine and then through the afternoon, we'll actually get in on some sun throughout portions of the coast. so the only thing tomorrow morning, we cannot get rid of these cold temperatures. we're back down again in the low to mid 50s for much of the bay area. that will leave us with 55 here in the peninsula. the one exception and the coldest spot will be the north bay right here at 49 through the afternoon. tomorrow we are seeing temperatures going back up into the 70s and low 80s inland. so you're going to be doing everything you can probably to get out from behind the desk at work and just get lunch outside and just enjoy this 81 here in concord, 76 in san jose. it's not a bad idea, right? 80 in san jose and 79 in napa, right at the coastline will be in those 50 to 60. so withhe weather looking this good here for tomorrow, th
