here on nbc bay area. as for the wind, coupled with the dry conditions, that means some bay area pg&e customers are without power tonight. pg&e says more than 800 customers across santa clara, alameda and contra costa counties have had their power cut off to reduce fire risk. let's talk more about the fire risk and what's happening outside. let's go to our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. wind always plays a role in this. where are we when it comes to gusts? well, we're going to see the strongest gusts here out across the coastline. you can see right now, these are the current wind speeds where we're up to 35mph in san francisco. a lot of the lower elevations, anywhere from ten to about 20mph. and that continues to be the big headline through this weekend. we'll see those strongest gusts here for the coastal areas. 10:00 tonight. we're at 38 here in san francisco, 16 in san jose. tomorrow morning we generally get a break. but there you can see again san francisco still 25. and then as we head through tom

bay area fire departments are ready to be all hands on deck. ktvu john is live in the oakland hills with what people need to know about the potential dangers. john. >> yeah. amber. for people who've lived through wildfires before, these conditions certainly cause for concern. but firefighters i spoke to say they are prepared. with the national weather service warning of an elevated to near critical fire weather threat through saturday. residents in the east bay are on high alert. what goes through your head? >> fear when you see all the grass, the dead grass. >> fred booker of oakland hills, whose home was destroyed in the 1991 firestorm, says he and his neighbors are making sure they're prepared. >> more and more people are are cleaning up, especially on our street. >> and it's not just people here in the hills. herds of goats have been hard at work, too, clearing hundreds of acres of dry vegetation. >> it makes a tremendous difference, especially when it comes to, again, getting to some of these areas of the hills that we just couldn't send h

so as this low moves on shore, it's whipping the wind right through the bay area. that's one simplified way of thinking about why it got so windy over the last two days. good news is that is clearly onshore flow, these winds and relatively humid out there. we're not drying the atmosphere a whole lot from this. it's just very windy on grass that's already dried out and very windy for your part of the bay. even if you're not worried about the grass catching on fire, you just got to get out in this stuff. it's going to get better by tomorrow. and that's the good news on the forecast, because that low is going to move far enough inland. it's going to stop messing with us and things will get better. all right. let's clear out what we're looking at in terms of where the red flag warning is. we'll say goodbye to altamont pass. and now what we want to take a look at is what happened to the marine layer. that's it. see it? let's go down the coast there. go all the way down to san mateo county coastline. there's not a lot left of this. so. and it's not coming back tonight ei

as you can see, most of the state here now it's not directly in the bay area, but you can see the sierra has some fire weather and thus a greater sacramento area. and the fresno area. but this does include a fairfield and valais. whoa, this is for saturday morning into sunday morning just because it's so dry and windy out there. a live look here in san francisco. you some breezy conditions. the winds have calmed down a bit. here are some of the wind speeds from about midnight today. 56 miles per hour over at the altamont pass. it's that close to where the psps is our as a fo 51 miles per hour. 41 miles per hour over at oakland airport, san jose gusting at 28 miles per hour today. and here are the current wind speeds and this is at the surface. we're pretty breezy. so at 32 miles per hour here in oakland. now, this is that on shore flow here. so you may notice a chill in the air with these breezy conditions. now, yesterday was really the big drop in the temperatures. today we are about 9 degrees down in places like santa rosa. a few degrees at different one to 3 degrees. a difference toda

the purple triangles indicate a psps, and they're just under a thousand in the bay area. see there. livermore is one of the cities where winds have led to power shutoffs. we spoke with one resident who is without electricity because tree branches came down on some power lines. he's worried about losing what's in his refrigerator. >> but if it were more than several hours, then it would be a problem. >> now, when we go out to do inspections, we're checking for things like vegetation, branches, trees, debris that may have ended up in our lines or in our electric equipment. that all has to be removed before we turn the power back on. >> p-g-and-e's has set up resource centers for those without power. >> traffic on the bay bridge headed toward oakland is backed up. and here is the reason why. a truck lost part of its load this afternoon on the lower deck. you can clearly see two lanes are blocked, but once you get past that, it's fairly smooth sailing to the east bay. but that is a big slowdown. and if you're still on the san francisco side, well, trying to get to the bridge

a blustery evening in progress across the entire bay area, not just one section like around the centralo. it is gusty as far as the winds are blowing and reporting at this hour, 32mph in napa. humidity. you're going to see a lot of this because the humidity is low. and that's because of those whipping winds and the cooler air mass. so through the weekend we have elevated fire danger with winds continuing all the way through saturday night. those gusty winds up to 50mph. the higher elevations above 2000ft. humidity drops to 15% throughout the north bay, east bay, and portions of the santa clara valley. now we have a red flag warning in effect. that's for the central valley, but also solano county. so i'm talking about you and fairfield, also vallejo, benicia, martinez, american canyon area of low pressure. well, to the north of the bay area continues to spill cooler air mass in a southerly fashion. and that's kicking out the moisture from the atmosphere. that's why our humidity is dropping and the winds are increasing tonight. overnight, those winds 10 to 20 gusts up to 30 temperature-wi

christie smith, nbc bay area news. well, you just heard the vice president speaking during today's visit to los angeles. he, jd vance, doubled down on the guard and said the white house is prepared to send the national guard anywhere else it deems necessary. if you enforce your own laws and if you protect federal law enforcement, we're not going to send in the national guard because it's unnecessary. but if you let violent rioters burn great american cities to the ground, then of course we're going to send federal law enforcement in to protect the people the president was elected to protect. and i think what the ninth circuit said very clearly is when the president makes a determination that you've got to send in certain federal officials to protect people, that determination was legitimate, and the president is going to do it again if he has to. but hopefully it won't be necessary. vice president is going to stay in los angeles for the next few hours. he's attending a fundraiser for the republican national committee.

but we are going to start with fire danger in the bay area today. it is still lights out for nearly a thousand pg&e customers in the east bay, and more could be getting shutoff notices soon if the winds don't ease up this weekend. nbc bay area's thom jensen is live in livermore, where pg&e has set up a spot for people to get some shade, power up their phones, maybe get some answers. tom, what's pg&e saying about the size of these shutoffs? how many customers total? audrey. we've got some breaking news for you. this. this really looks like it has expanded now. more than a thousand customers in the bay area. we just got updated psps event numbers from pg&e. and it looks like most of them are still here in alameda county, about 650. the numbers reduced a little bit in contra costa county, about 200, a little more than 200 now, but we're seeing more psps customers now in san francisco about 61, another 164 in san mateo county and 11 in marin county, 48 more in santa clara county. so this is over a thousand now. and then farther to the south, about 2000 o
