jackson lee: thank you very much, mr. speaker. i rise to call out the clairian call for fixing america's health care system. we urgently need to fix it and we realize that if you've got it, you like it, you can keep it. we need to get a system that will allow those who are underinsured and without insurance to be able to be cared for in this nation. we need to reduce the serious health disparities. we need to also ensure there is a public option, that there is universal access to health care. make it a good medicare plan that helps the young, the old and the working americans. in addition, we need to be fair to how we pay for it. we need to realize that physician-owned hospitals are not the enemy. in fact, they help to in essence bring down health disparities. many physician-owned hospitals or investor-owned hospitals are in the urban and rural areas with no other hospitals would go. let's fix this system in a fair manner that addresses the question in ensuring that the those without insurance can have a good public option, can as

sheila jackson lee. they and the homeland security committee were most helpful. mr. chairman, often as we go through the airports of america we and our constituents see members of the military passing through those airports, many of them are going to iraq and afghanistan. they are leaving their loved ones. facing sometimes an uncertain future. others are coming in from iraq and afghanistan going home to see loved ones. sometimes they hadn't seen them for over a year. they are often loaded down with heavy gear. now, also at the same time we see the registered travelers who we talked about earlier, we see united premium members, we see delta platinum members and gold medallion members. we all see them getting priority. that's ok. i have no problem with that. but if there's any group of americans who ought to get priority to go to the front of the line, not to skip security, but to go to the front of the line, it's men and women in uniform. so this amendment extends to them the same basic courtesy that we extend to over a million other americans right now. in fact, this

and mr. jackson and mr. lewis, we would love to have you in our caucus. but we have spent to get 30 bikes, we have spent $200,000, but only the small number of people have signed up for this. and last time -- last year they were only used 186 times. that calculates to $330 a ride. now, it's important to give staff employees benefits, and that's why this bill increases the salary allowance. we give them metro cards. they have a health care and fitness center. they have federal holidays. they have nurses on the premises. they have a thrift savings plan. there are a lot of good things that we do and should continue doing for employees. but the bike program is so silly. why is it silly? it is not available except for on weekdays from 8:00 to 5:00. so when i have an employee come to work, i expect them to come to work. these bikes are deluxe bikes. there's a nice seat, a very nice cushiony seats, they have lights, these speedometers. these bikes don't have no speed to them at all. but they do have a speedometer in case they do get up to 5 miles an hour. they h
