tom, rick, o's extra right now. >>> jason berken had a tough go of this game. >> everybody back in my days when we were a powerful ball club in the american league east, the pitchers had a very tough time pitching off that mound in oakland. i'm not trying to give them excuse you are for pitching poorly tonight but it seemed like the last two nights the orioles go in there all up in the strike zone all the time and they can't all be that way even out of the bullpen. got to be a little something over there had to do with the mound. >> so you think they're padding the mound? >> no. ic it's just a bit different from what you normally see. they're all supposed to be symmetrical. 19 and a half inches above the ground. some are flatter than others and some are steeper. i think you'll see tonight that even oakland pitchers have had a tough time adjusting to that mound. but tonight it was the orioles who had the biggest problem. >> last night down 6-0 after one inning of play. down early in this game after three innings of play. we'll pick up highlights in this game. orioles with the a's at ba

tom ricks, i guess, i have to say he's my favorite author who wrote "fiasco" has a new book titled "the gamble" which is general petraeus's efforts in iraq between 2006 and 2008. and several others here, "fox in the der" which is the story of the german african corps. three victories and the defeat that is the rise and the fall of the first british empire. the defeat being the american revolution and one that i just completed, malcolm gladwe'll book the "outliers" and why some people are successful and why some who are large iq's are moderately successful. i find it to be quite revealing and it explains a lot of people's history as to how well they can do and as well as they will do. but i'm always reading several books. mostly history. a great deal of military history. that's what i do. i'm chairman of the arms services committee and i think it's important that people involved with the military understand history, where we've been 'cause it helps us determine where we're going. >> to see more summer reading lists and other program information, visit our website at booktv.org. >> da cap

would recommend for people who want to understand what went wrong in iraq is a book called fiasco, tom ricks and he has written a sequel which is called "the gamble" and i haven't read that, but it is really a great book in terms of peeling away what happened in iraq. and, you know, essentially, the united states made some very critical mistakes we are paying a heavy price for even now. the first was, the inadequacy of the troops that went into iraq. which meant that while we could tom the regime we could not restore law and order and so, a mass looting occurred, and american troops all too often found themselves frankly standing on the sidelines having to watch it because it wasn't their mission and we didn't have enough troops to do much about it. it is significantly -- significantly eroded iraqi public confidence in who we were and what we were about. and secondly, paul bremer then sort of the guy in charge, put in charge by both rumsfeld and bush, overturned some decisions the american military had been trying to make in order to restore law and order, and, to essentially try to re

tom davis together with rick dempsey. the orioles five straight wins now, rick. better pitching or better hitting? >> i like the way both of it is going now. the reason i like the offense so much is because they're scoring early in ballgames. they're scoring a little bit in the middle and whatever they need late in ballgames they're getting now. they're building a lot of confidence, and they seem to be relaxing, and they're down in ballgames and they're scoring runs. that's what i like the most. a pinch hit base hitter and then the big blow. brian roberts is usually in the mix somewhere. but everybody is really coming together nicely. i like what i see there. the pitching, all of these young guys are starting to go deep interballgames, especially brad bergesen. i think all of the other pitchers are watching him. they see the way he is pitching quick and his tempo is nice and easy and slow. >> some good news. now, the orioles send alberto castillo to the minors and brought back chris ray. for the latest on that and the weather on south florida. what is the weather

tom davis with rick temp city. baseball draft is coming up this tuesday starting at 6:00. the oriole have the fifth pick in the draft. >> when you're talking about the top of the draft, the first round, i just don't believe in drafting for needs because there's -- you can never have enough pitching. if you think the position player is the best guy that's the way you go. i can't fill a need in the first round. obviously there have been drafts in the past where i've been here and we went and got a couple two or three middle infielders, kids we felt like had a chance to stay on the dirt and play because we felt like there was a need but it wasn't in the first or second round. >> here's a look at the orioles number one picks over the last five seasons that include bryan mad duction last year. billy still in the minors. towns end never really signed with the orioles. >> it's tough. i do agree with one thing joe jordan happened to say. when you go into these drafts, look for as much pitching as you can possibly get unless you have a young guy that sticks out who is going to fill
