and a double-murder that has stunned a community just outside pensacola. a couple killed in what was apparently a home invasion while eight of their children were also inside. nbc's mark potter is miami with the latest. mark. >> reporter: good evening, lester. police say they're looking for three suspects seen leaving the crime scene in a red van. the murders occurred after a break-in at a large rural home west of pensacola, florida. the ctims, burt anmelanie billings were shot multiple times while in their bedroom around 7:00 thursday night. the billings were well known and well regarded locally because they had 16 children. 12 of whom they adopted. >> burt and melanie billings, i believe, exemplified what is good and decent in society. they have been prominently mentioned in the local media on numerous occasions for outreach and humanitarian efforts and assisting children with autism and downs syndrome. >> now, authorities say eight of the children ranging 8 to 14 were in the house at the time of the murders but none of them was hurt. police say they do

cnn's ed lavandera on the case for us in pensacola. ed, help us out. what can you confirm? >> reporter: well, i guess we should start off with these reports with connections to organized crime and that sort of thing. we have been hearing on background from various people most of the week about these connections involving these suspects. however, as we have tried to gather information on that, we have kept hitting roadblocks. and, in fact, we're hearing from various colleagues of mine, hearing from various federal sources on this, that at this point, there just doesn't seem to be enough there. we don't get the sense from the sources on the federal level that we're talking to that there's much credence to -- to any kind of organized crime on behalf of these -- of these suspects. so, it's been, you know, a very delicate thing, but it has been adding to the swirl of speculation that has been going on with this story throughout most of the week. but that's kind of where we stand there. but also a great twist, an amazing twist, this morning just as family members and friends were

terrell brown joins us this morning with the latest from pensacola. good morning, terrell. >> reporter: good morning to you. the big question for days now has been why? how did this happen? we've confirmed this morning that the primary motive in this case was robbery. several arrests still have to be made this morning, still waiting to bring one person to justice. >> we're about that close. >> reporter: police know his name and where he lives. they say it's only a matter of time before moving in on the last suspect in the brutal killing. yesterday, this man stood in a pensacola courtroom. 35-year-old leonard gonzalez jr., the alleged mastermind of the attack. he's won awards for community service, is passionate about teaching karate to young children served in the national guard and claims he's innocent. >> the investigator and the sheriff have focused their case entirely on me even pushing me into the media before evidence was gathered. >> reporter: gonzalez jr. is one of seven men now in police custody charged in the murders. police say some of the

mark potters joins us from pensacola. mark, did police talk about what the suspects took from the home? you don't often see a sheriff embracing a victim's family member at a press conference. >> reporter: well, this sheriff is very proud of the work that's been done here. he's also quite adept at dealing with the media, and he brought everybody together for that purpose, to announce that, indeed, they have seven people in custody, six adults and the 16-year-old who, by the way, will be tried as an adult on murder charges. everyone in this case will face murder charges, even the man who was arrested a couple days ago for just tampering with evidence. his charges will also be elevated. as to what was taken from the house, you said it, it was a safe. the prosecutor would only say that. he would not say how much money, if any, was in the safe, whether it was recovered or anything like that. still to be unanswered is why the billings had to die in what was described as predominantly a robbery. what was the confrontation like,

ed lavandera from pensacola, florida, with the very latest. ed, are there any special plans now for this funeral? >> reporter: well, yeah, that will be held later on this morning. we expect a large gathering of people as they come to pay their final respects to byrd and melanie buildings here in pensacola. that will continue to go on this morning. there was a viewing yesterday that had a lot of friends and family turning out and people who had known the couple well, including the many people who had worked with them and helped them care for the children, as well. but in the meantime, the investigation here in pensacola continues even though authorities here don't have anything scheduled as far as today is concerned so far. they know -- we know they are continuing to process those key pieces of evidence that were gathered yesterday, including the safe, which was found on one of the properties owned by pamela wiggins, and authorities here say there are still two or three other people of interest they're looking into and possibly another arrest t

brian wilson live with the news in pensacola tonight. brian, back to this realtor whom cops found in alabama. what do we know about a connection to this case? >> basically, we want to point out she is a person of interest at this point, not a suspect. she is in this building as we speak being questioned by authorities. they want to know about her relationship with a man that deputies say was the mastermind of this crime. take a listen to the sheriff this afternoon. >> we know that she was associated with leonard patrick gonzalez jr. up until the day of the murders. and so, again, we would like to get information from her about his activities, whereabouts, movements, those sorts of things. again, she is a person of interest because of her close association with him. >> her name is pamela long, shep, and she is a local realtor of some note. she is known well in this community. shepard: she had rented to that man about whom the sheriff spoke. we understand there is another person of interest still out there somewhere. >> you touched on it,

before the service began the billings family spoke to reporters and ed lavandera is in pensacola and, ed, not your typical behavior would be after the funeral. what would you say? >> based on what the family attorney just revealed, something quite unexpected. the family attorney coming out a little while ago and probably to the dismay of investigators and prosecutors in this case revealing what has really been at the heart and the center of a lot of speculation just what was inside the safes taken from the billings home. >> as a result of the intense speculation regarding the motive of the crime, i have been authorized to tell you that the safe that was removed from the billings home contained only children's prescription medication, important family documents and some jewelry of sentimental value. hopefully, this will put to rest the intense speculation and rumors that are swirling about the billings family. >> susan. we've tried to reach out to the sheriff's office here and they are deferring all comments to the attorney. whether this attorney is saying is, indeed, accurate. but the
