allie rasmus is out on the scene right now. where are you and how bad is it? >> reporter: it looks bad out here, dave. in fact just we are on the westbound 580 west of portola avenue and right now the highway is completely closed and that is because some of the cleanup has started to take place, about five minutes ago cal trans cleanup crews, a truck pulled up with their sweeper and some of their cleanup equipment. that vehicle that you see moving is the giant tow truck that had the crane on top. that truck was able to put the 18-wheeler that had flipped over right side up so this 18 wheeler is no longer upside down. it is right side up. you can see there is people on top loading some of the debris that that cargo truck was carrying back on to the bed of the truck. but while all of this cleanup takes place this highway is completely shut down, westbound 580 previously just the far left lanes had been shut down but now as we said as the cleanup starts to take place all the lanes are shut down. so traffic here is at a complete stand still. we are just west of im

let's get right to allie rasmus. what did investigators reveal this. >> reporter: we just heard from the lead investigator in the hasanni campbell case who has been working this case for a year, when hasanni was first reported missing. the first person to report hasanni missing was louis ross and the lieutenant announced that ross is not only a person of interest but he's the primary suspect in hasanni's disappearance. >> i can tell you that i continue to investigate the case. louis ross is still considered the prime suspect in the missing case of hasanni campbell. the case is still classified as a missing person's case but i believe lou ross was is is -- hasanni campbell met death at the hands of louis ross. police arrested ross and jennifer campbell. at the time they were considered suspects in the disappearance. but ross and campbell were late released for lack of evidence. both of them left the bay area about six months half hasanni's parents. ross lives in maryland now. but he does not believe that hasanni even

ktvu ail lay rasmus is in -- allie rasmus is in san francisco with more. >> reporter: good morning. police just gave us an update on this case. they believe there are two people that attempted to rob the federal agent. one is recovering at san francisco general hospital recovering from non-life- threatening gunshot wounds. here's what happened -- we're told the agent involved is a federal agent with the irs's criminal investigation unit. san francisco police say that agent was off duty last night. he or she was walking through the city's bayview district near la salle and kirkwood shortly after midnight. police say that's when two individuals approached that agent and attempted to rob him or her but the agent fought back. they opened fire and shot one of the suspects. san francisco police will do an administrative and criminal investigation into the shooting. they add that's customary any time a law enforcement officer is involved in a shooting even if the officer is not from their department. they also said the irs will conduct an investigation. she told us a little bit about what

allie rasmus has been following the story. she joins us now with an update. >> reporter: investigators took a plane to san diego, they are there to investigate a man who they believe shot and killed an officer. tonight he is in custody. >> he has contacted several arteries, leading in and out of california. everyone was on alert for this guy. >> reporter: oakland police suspected barrientos would head to the u.s.-mexico border. this is video of barrientos mouthing the words i love you mom to the camera. police say he was armed with a nine millimeter during his arrest. san diego police say one of their officers spotted a man fitting barrientos description in this thunder bird. >> the police sergeant pulled in behind it, stopped the vehicle. challenged the occupants, one of the occupants identified himself as being the suspect of the shooting in oakland. >> reporter: they say the second person was the person in charge of driving barrientos across the boarder. police also arrested a woman accused of aiding barrientos escape. barr

allie rasmus joins us with more on the investigation and what police are saying. >> reporter: good afternoon. oakland police's acting detective gus galindo has been working on case for about a year now. >> the case is still classified as a missing person's case. but based on the investigation i feel that hasanni campbell met foul play at the hands of louis ross and remains our primary suspect. >> reporter: ross was hasanni campbell's foster post -- foster father. the lieutenant would not say what information are leading him this way. jennifer campbell was hasanni campbell's foster mother. officials met with her. the lieutenant said louis ross is the suspect because i was the last person seen with hasanni campbell that we know about. ross said he left hasanni campbell in a parking area next to a rock ridge shoe store. today, the detective says he believes hasanni never made it to that shoe shore. he's working with the district torn's office and hopes to file -- attorney's office and hopes to file charges. >> if p somebody out there -- if somebody out there knows anything, saw anything that da

allie rasmus has more in this live report from san jose. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, there are hundreds of parents and children lined up out here in front of the sacred heart community center here in san jose, here to pick up a free backpack with school supplies. they do this every year for the past four years and organizers say there is a greet need for this service when it is time to go back to school, especially during a recreation. kids got to pick out a backpack of their choice for the school year. we saw some of the children's faces light up when they found a backpack with their favorite character on it. they are age specific to that means the kindergarteners get crayons while some of the high school kids have calculators. approximately 1700 people stood in line for hours just to register to be here to pick up a backpack today. the director says that is a record breaking number. >> what was shocking was seeing the line wrapping around the block, the corner, the demand we had never seen before, especially from families

in santa clara county, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> a new crackdown is about to get underway targeting drivers who use their cell phones. the chp is launching a state- wide campaign starting tomorrow to catch drivers talking on phones or texting. the chp says more than 1200 crashes statewide have involved cell phones in the last two years. those crashes killed 1600 people, injuring another 850. >>> the state is considering two bills aimed at removing a water bomb from the november ballot. governor schwarzenegger is supporting the move because he and others worry others would reject the measure because of the state's budget woes. if the bond were passed in november, it would pay for improvements to upgrade california's water system. supporters of the bond want to delay the passage until 2012 when they hope the state is in better financial state. >>> turning to weather more sunshine there. we've been talking about how mild it is but really gorgeous out there. let's go right to mark tamayo. these are just minor temperatures. inland neighborhoods up about 3 to 4 degrees over the

allie rasmus is at the emeryville station with important information for commuters this morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, passenger and freight trains are back up and running again this morning. amtrak spokespersons tell us that they cleared these tracks shortly after midnight last night. that was about eight hours after yesterday's derailment. now that derailment happened about a quarter mile west of here between the emeryville station and jack london square. union pacific spokesperson say what happened was that two empty rail cars tipped over. now they had to shut down the tracks to clear everything up. the first capitol corridor commuter train pulled into this emeryville station around 4:40 a.m. right on time and we watched a couple of early morning passengers hop on board but it was definitely a different story for commuters yesterday evening. several capitol corridor trains were either cancelled or delayed and amtrak had to bus passengers between the enotherville and oakland stations. >> 8:20 to catch the 8:30 train. that is not going to leave until 9:45. >> we are pretty tired.
