allie rasmus is out on the scene right now. where are you and how bad is it? >> reporter: it looks bad out here, dave. in fact just we are on the westbound 580 west of portola avenue and right now the highway is completely closed and that is because some of the cleanup has started to take place, about five minutes ago cal trans cleanup crews, a truck pulled up with their sweeper and some of their cleanup equipment. that vehicle that you see moving is the giant tow truck that had the crane on top. that truck was able to put the 18-wheeler that had flipped over right side up so this 18 wheeler is no longer upside down. it is right side up. you can see there is people on top loading some of the debris that that cargo truck was carrying back on to the bed of the truck. but while all of this cleanup takes place this highway is completely shut down, westbound 580 previously just the far left lanes had been shut down but now as we said as the cleanup starts to take place all the lanes are shut down. so traffic here is at a complete stand still. we are just west of im

allie rasmus is at a station shut down over the weekend. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are in front over station -- fire station 30 here in san jose. it is one of the stations that is going to be effected by the budget cuts and layoffs the city of san jose is facing. you can tell it is top of mind for the people who live in this neighborhood because directly across the station from this -- in front of this business there is a giant sign the owner posted out here that says danger your fire company is closing. they are warning people about the changes coming to the neighborhood here in this fire station closure. now a total of 49 san jose firefighters lost their jobs this weekend. they turned in their gear and along with two fire stations the city is also losing four engine trucks and one ladder truck. the city of san jose is dealing with a $118 million budget shortfall and they are negotiating with the local 230 firefighters union to try and cut the fire department budget. yesterday the union announced their latest proposal. the 9th proposal they have offered the city

allie rasmus has more in this live report from san jose. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, there are hundreds of parents and children lined up out here in front of the sacred heart community center here in san jose, here to pick up a free backpack with school supplies. they do this every year for the past four years and organizers say there is a greet need for this service when it is time to go back to school, especially during a recreation. kids got to pick out a backpack of their choice for the school year. we saw some of the children's faces light up when they found a backpack with their favorite character on it. they are age specific to that means the kindergarteners get crayons while some of the high school kids have calculators. approximately 1700 people stood in line for hours just to register to be here to pick up a backpack today. the director says that is a record breaking number. >> what was shocking was seeing the line wrapping around the block, the corner, the demand we had never seen before, especially from families

allie rasmus is at the emeryville station with important information for commuters this morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, passenger and freight trains are back up and running again this morning. amtrak spokespersons tell us that they cleared these tracks shortly after midnight last night. that was about eight hours after yesterday's derailment. now that derailment happened about a quarter mile west of here between the emeryville station and jack london square. union pacific spokesperson say what happened was that two empty rail cars tipped over. now they had to shut down the tracks to clear everything up. the first capitol corridor commuter train pulled into this emeryville station around 4:40 a.m. right on time and we watched a couple of early morning passengers hop on board but it was definitely a different story for commuters yesterday evening. several capitol corridor trains were either cancelled or delayed and amtrak had to bus passengers between the enotherville and oakland stations. >> 8:20 to catch the 8:30 train. that is not going to leave until 9:45. >> we are pretty tired.
