is that right, anne? >> reporter: it's right. that's very right, ann. tonight the federal science and bp engineers are trying to figure out what the next steps, what the final steps should be to permanently kill this well. you remember that all along the federal government has said it would not consider the well killed until it was cemented from the bottom through the relief well. well, a pressure test last night revealed another possibility. the static kill, which was a procedure that pumped mud and cement through the well, apparently was so successful that officials now believe the cement went all the way down the well pipe into the reservoir and then up this small space between the outside of the pipe and inside of the casing called the annulus. the problem is they also think it may have trapped 1,000 barrels of oil in the annulus, so if they were to proceed with the relief well as planned and drill into the annulus and then pump mud and cement under heavy pressure, they fear they could send all that oil up the pipe and out the blowout preventer and

good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. several cases here in the bay area all around in several counties. we'll get to those numbers in a minute but the number of people reporting illnesses has been rising as more people hear about the recall, more are coming to report the symptoms to local health departments. so here are those numbers. here in san francisco county, 25 people have record getting sick. alameda county, 16. contra costa county, 22. san mateo county 8 people, and santa clara county, check that out, 38 people including three people that were so sick they had to go to the hospital. common symptoms of the salmonella poisoning are diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. it comes on within 8 to 72 hours after eating the bad eggs. >> i made breakfast for dinner and i woke up in the middle of the night horrible stomach pains. >> most healthy adults if we got this we are going to get sick and well without treatment. but those people elderly, infants and people with immune diseases need to be careful. >> reporter: it's

anne makovec is right there with an update on repairs and clean-up. anne, good morning. i have to ask you, can you smell it? >> reporter: you know, actually, when we arrived just before 5:00 a.m., my photographer and i were noting to each other that we couldn't really smell anything. we were very glad for that. but now as the hours have been progressing, the smell has been increasing. you can see over here we have an exposed hole and that's where they are drawing sewage up from right now taking it into those tanker trucks and taking it away. i'm guessing that now because people are wake up, showering, using the bathroom, there's just more exposure to that sort of stuff coming up through the hole so i think that's what we're smelling right now. let me tell ya, you should be glad you don't have smellevision. it's not so good. the pipe ruptured on wednesday. a little background on this stingy situation. crews have been working nonstop to repair it. it's still broken. on wednesday it spilled raw sewage into the street to the nearby lagoon and into six people's garages. 5,000
