theresa garcia is live at lake merit bart. theresa, this could have an affect how bart should spend that multimillion dollar surplus they've been talking about. >> sure could. a lot of people probably say you know what, get the a.c. system working. no heat-related problems this morning but with more heat on the way you can get steamy trains due to the a.c. system overheating and crashing. bart commuters may want to bring an extra bottle of water and patience. the equipment that monitoring the movement of trains failed around 4:00 yesterday. this switched the system into a manual safety mode which means trains that normally travel of speeds up to 70 mph slowed to 25. the bay area systemwide slowdown caused at least 20-minute delays right during commute time. the passengers also suffered through a.c. failure. a problem that won't go away without the transit agency spending some money. >> about a quarter of our fleet, the temperatures reach above 95 degrees, the air conditioning will just shut down in many of those cars. and so w

theresa garcia is live at lake merit bart. theresa? >> just when you thought you could hop on a cool bart train, you're pouring sweat on a quarter of the fleet at least. that was yesterday and the situation could happen again today. probably some of the best advice is grab a little tiny size fan, a little patience because it could happen to you again today. bart says the heat is what caused the trackside computer equipment that monitoring the movement of its trains to fail yesterday afternoon. it happened around 4:00. this switched the system into a manual safety mode which means trains that travelled 75 mph slowed to 25. it keeps the greater distance between the trains so the systemwide slowdown caused at least 20 minute delays at commute time. passengers suffered through a. c. failure on many train cars, a problem that won't go away without the transit agency spending some money. >> about a quarter of our fleet, the temperatures reach above 95 degrees, the air conditioning won't -- just shuts down in many of those cars. and so what w

bart also had its own problems. a lot of people got stuck in the commute yesterday because bart had several areas that were effected by the heat. i did talk to a spokesperson for bart this morning about the problems today and he said, look, we're probably going to have fewer problems, a lot fewer problems because an army of crews have been working overnight to help fix car that is did not have air- conditioning and to work on the control room and the boxes that overheated yesterday. he goes certainly with the high temperatures it's likely we'll still have some problems because he says the heat just causes a lot of issues. >> one thing that i can tell you is that when you have the first heat wave what happens is all those things that were about to break are going to break. >> reporter: you're looking at video from a control room in dublin. the areas in bart that were effected by this heat were kind of threefold. you had control rooms that don't have the proper air- conditioning in them so theyover heated. you have bo

then on to the bart muni tubes. the tunneling will proceed under those tubes, and then there will be a u.m.s. station at that location joining with the metro at pal station. it then proceeds on to chinatown station andthen on out where we extract it. mosconi station will be the first undergration station traveling north. it will have a -- an entrance. we are acquiring the property. that property is in this area right here. this is where the surface entrance to the station is going to be. the station will be designed to have a concourse and a center platform designed to accommodate both two-car trains and the mosconi station will be located on 4th between howard and folsom. the union square market street station will be the second underground station traveling north. it will be the deepest station because of the bart tunnels that we will be closing. this station will be two entrances at the surface. one entrance will be near the existing apple store -- i am sorry. i am struggling with the mouse here but it is at the

i understand there is a plan to have a way to go to bart. i would hope there is. i'm not sure it is part of this report but it should be there because even in 1939 or whenever we had our first transbay terminal, the one that is being torn down, we had street cars come right up to the terminal so if someone is taking barter muni they should be able to access the trains and the buses, you made comment on that, i don't know if that is part of today's presentation or not. >> there is not a vacation in this package that would relate to a barton muni connector. that is something that was included on our original document as an alternate program element and something we're continuing to discuss with bart. we kind of developed it to the extent that we have identified that a connection -- because between midway, slightly close to embarcadero. we have identified it as a more logical connection, slightly shorter and has conflicts with underground facilitateds between us and montgomery station. but that would be part of the rail component of the program if we implement that.
