bob redell is live on cold harbor avenue. we understand firefighters managed to pull an elderly woman to safety. >> reporter: that woman's husband and son arrived on the scene. they said that she was stuck in the backyard behind the house, not in the house itself, but in the backyard waiting for someone to get her out of there because there was a fence there. you can see what she was up against. the house was fully engulfed, taken by a witness who was driving by. when firefighters arrived at this home on cold harbor avenue in cupertino around midnight, half the house was already a fireball. a neighbor alerted the fire department that the woman was stuck in the backyard. the neighbor and the fire department pulled her out to safety. >> we're happy with the outcome on this one. we contained the fire to the main fire building. nobody got hurt. no firefighters got hurt. the occupant was fine. we will call this a good stop. >> reporter: it does appear the fire started in the garage, but the fire department doesn't know what caused

that's where bob redell is this morning. good morning, bob. >> reporter: as you are well aware, this egg recall has hurt local restaurants and some supermarkets. people are just afraid to go to them to buy their eggs because they're afraid they might be using or selling eggs from those iowa farms that are possibly tainted with salmonella. then you have places like the olivera egg ranch in san jose, which raised and produced eggs here locally. it's business, as a result, is increasing because of the nationwide egg recall. the owner telling us he's had other stores call him up looking for safe eggs to sell to their customers. more individuals are coming in here because they're not sure that the eggs in their regular supermarkets are free of salmonell salmonella. >> coming in. and they tend to be more reassured buying them locally, where they know the eggs produced here in california. >> reporter: now, to keep your eggs safe from salmonella or any sort of bacteria, the owner here recommends keeping them at 45 degrees and below

bob redell joins us now live from sfo. bob? >> reporter: qua >> reporter: qantas flight 74 took off just before midnight, and minutes into it flyers experienced something unnerving. >> it was very strong shutter on the right-hand side of the plane. and it wasn't turbulence. >> reporter: no it wasn't turbulence. it was what you might refer to as a catastrophic engine failure. this is what mechanics discovered once the qantas 747 was back at the gate. you can see in these still photos an enormous gash in one of the plane's right engines. the captain came on and told passenge passengers that the plane engine had blown up. apparently flames were shooting out at one point. the force of that explosion caused the plane, in the words of one passenger, to thud and bump and veer left. the captain was able to maintain control. >> kept everybody quiet. in the end the captain came on and assured everybody that the plane was, you know, still relatively safe, though there was serious damage in one of the engines. we then jettisoned fuel and t

bob redell is live at sfo. this all allegedly started with an angry phone call not to the airline, not to the airport, but to a local hotel clerk. >> reporter: yes, a hotel clerk in the bay. the fbi is trying to figure out why this person called that particular hotel. the call came into the front desk at the hampton inn and suites hotel just after 9:00 yesterday morning. no caller i.d. not coming from inside the hotel. the clerk picked up the phone, on the other end of the line a man was yelling and rach rantin. the call lasted less than a minute, but in that time, the man recognized a couple of words like american airlines, flight 24 and hijack. he called police who in turn notified the fbi. within a matter of minutes, that flight, american airlines flight 24 which was about to take off from sfo to jfk was sent to a remote part of the tarmac at sfo where passengers sat for at least two hours. authorities boarded the plane and took a man and woman off in handcuffs, you should be able to see them in that photogr

bob redell is live in san jose where kids will return to class today. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. we are talking about trace elementary school. just over a month ago a devastating fire here destroyed 16 classrooms and the library. the school district, the san jose unified school district then at that time made a pledge and vowed to have trace open in time for the first day of school which is today. by all appearances, the district kept its promise. students will be returning to a much different-looking campus. the district had to bring in 20 portable classrooms. they set those up on a temporary campus located across the street because it will be some time before the building destroyed in the fire is rebuilt. the community has pitched in on that effort, having raised more than $100,000 to cover the district's insurance deductible. teachers have also received thousands of dollars of donations to replace supplies that were lost in the fire what is difficult for teachers, though, is some of those items destroyed in the fire ca

bob redell is live in the bayview district. what's the latest? >> reporter: we can see more investigators arriving on the scene where the shooting took place apparently in this parking lot. we're near the intersection of kirkwood and coral. this happened around midnight last night. even though sfpd is investigating an officer-involved shooting, it did not involve one of their officers. around midnight last night, an irs agent, who was obviously with the federal government, off-duty, was in this area when at least two teenage boys, teenage men approached her with a gun and -- approached that person with a gun and tried to rob them. this agent also had a gun, pulled their weapon and shot one of those teenage suspects. hitting one in the stomach. we can go to video taken not long ago from sf general where that juvenile suspect is being brought in by the ambulance, being wheeled into the hospital. our understanding is that this is a critical injury. the other suspect was able to run away, but not too far. sfpd did catch that person in the bayview dis

bob redell has more on what's happening today. bob? >> reporter: driving while distracted is one of the leading causes of accidents. one of the biggest causes of accidents is this right here, the cell phone. that's why today chp along with other law enforcement agencies in the state will be cracking down and enforcing what they say is a zero tolerance attitude, policy towards those not going hands-free. since the hands-free law went into effect over two years ago, cell phones contributed to more than 1200 accidents in california. 16 people killed as a result. 850 injured. the only time you are legally allowed to hold the phone to your ear is if there's an emergency and you need to call 911. otherwise you need an ear piece, it can only cover one ear, can't cover both. they want you to have one ear available to listen for sounds while driving. any sort of texting is illegal. no one under 18 is allowed to use a cell phone while driving, period. almost a quarter million citations have been issued since this law went into effect. the fine f
