christie smith joins us live from oakland with one of the people forced to leave. the image burned into the minds of so many people. seeing people stuck on the roofs of their home, hoping just for a bit of help. you actually talked to one of these people. >> reporter: he was stranded on a roof top for three long days on day two he knew he wasn't getting help, so he had to dive into the murky water and try to find food for his family. he said it was awful, filled with oil. he finally found some food in a store that was flooded about a quarter of a mile away. along the way he says he saw people stuck on roof tops begging for help. eric butler was stuck there with 17 families. he said he got down finally when the water receded. a rescue crew eventually got the family out of oakland, a place they had never been before. a day after katrina, he said it was partly sunny, and then he looked outside, saw his dire under water, in no time the levees broke, that's when the first floor of his apartment complex was flooded. they had no time to move. here in the bay area he descr

christie smith is live this morning in oakland. that decision could really effect service cuts which effects riders. riders have had a tough time lately. >> reporter: they have. you know, there's a couple of schools of thought on this. many people believe it's the union, and if they win in court this could ease some delays that riders have been dealing with in the east bay for nearly two weeks now since ac transit imposed a work contract that apparently includes some big changes to schedules and rules for bus drivers. the agency says about 20% of the drivers have been failing to show up for work in a sick-out. the union says those numbers are inflated and that some drivers may not be showing up because of safety issues or other concerns. now, on friday, an alameda county superior court judge listened to arguments on both sides of the issues. the union is asking for an injunction asking ac transit not to impose the contract. negotiations were stalled last month and arbitration is expected to start august 20th. reporting live in oakl
