this is the inner city of amsterdam, and the rest of the city are the suburbs. the whole city, there are 2.2 million people, but the real city of amsterdam, there are less than 800,000, which i think is about the same as san francisco. i will also pass around a few sheets. the important thing is that amsterdam is one of the five major economic central's -- economic centers in europe, and we want to stay that way, and we are an attractive city for international business, like the american and asian companies that like to have business in amsterdam. it is a real nice place to stay. experts like to live in amsterdam, and is accessible from all parts of the world. it is also very important case of cycling. what irony said, 2.2 million and happens, but the last line may be the most important, about 120 kilometers per day traffic jams. that is qu7?) a lot. this distance is not more than 25k. we have a real problem. that is not good for business. for us, it is active transport, really important as a solution for being accessible. ok, does it work? yes. this is the city

the city charter says that you will not use city land for non recreational purposes. cultural immersion is a wonderful thing. there are some people there, i have been told, that we would like a continuance until august 19th. there are proposals to pay for the city college program to raise money that the department rightfully needs. thank you. >> thank you. >> i actually have the benefit of being a homeowner. i have a 10-week-old. on i am a homeowner in parnassus' heights and there is actually a playground that we go to probably every single day that has this recreational purpose. this is a private preschool. we have been coexisting with them. my to-rule has been going to that park every single day and interacting with those children even though a portion of that program is dedicated for them. they coexist with them. there are students and we are able to play together. we have been using the playground down at the hollow for years. i will not speak to the program, and i will just speak to what it is like as a parent. i don't think we have talked about the fact that our

i am a high-school history teacher in daly city. we have dealt a lot of budget cuts in our school district. i have lost pay and benefits. i understand what it means when we need these services to be paid. at the same time, i have a bartender. i owned a bar with my wife in the city of san francisco. i know how small businesses are suffering in this city right now. business is declining. i know that this service is critical, but i would like to point out three things. we have a federal system. it is the state's responsibility to tax of all. this fee is a regressive flat tax. the plump jack groups of the world, they will be able to handle this feat. but the corner store, they will not be able to handle this. the second point, san francisco has roughly the same budget as chicago. chicago is 3.5 times the size of san francisco. we cannot find $18 billion? pay for this? i have been doing some research myself. the marin institute, which published this next study, they do not just want to charge for farm. they want to start a new prohibitio

two cities. and thanks to the concerted efforts after these 30 years. this relationship has achieved remarkable and substantial rulls. there have been 225 projects of cooperation between the two cities. many chinese companies have found a home here. i think what is more significant is that this city is going to stage a san francisco place at the world expo in shanghai. that is an expression of profound friendship and strong special bonds between our two cities, and it will surely give new impetus to the friendship and cooperation between our two cities. this sculpture will stay here for a period of time. i think it will help local people to understand china, understand chinese history, chinese culture and the chinese philosophy of harmony. it will remind us to work hard to promote our mutual understanding and caption. i am confident with our joint efforts, we will surely make the san francisco exhibit a highlight at the world expo in shanghai, but also we will make san francisco the best gateway

we work with muni and the city. the cost by park merced. we can also create a very strong civic statement for the city from silicon valley and south. in the interim, low emissions shuttles provide access to bart, to daly city, and noncommute hours will provide access to adjacent shopping. we work with the m.t.a. and create a bicycle network that will create what is currently a fragmented public system. connected together with the neighborhood commons which will also have bicycles available for the residents and for the public. in addition, we'll have car-share pods. there is also limited access into park merced and limited access in the adjacent neighborhoods. we intend to open this up, especially along the boulevard, which will eliminate the con jex -- the congestion that you will find at park merced currently. pedestrian safety is being specifically addressed with these cross-walks, which will be a model for the rest of 19th avenue for this part of the city. one of the biggest environmental challenges we have had in the last 20 years is t

and that is not a city landmark. the guy who owns it is very aware of its significance as maybe the last and best example of a carville house. he really wants to take care of it. i don't know if he would go forward with any landmark designation just because like a lot of homeowners he doesn't want to be at all boxed in with what he can do. but that's kind of where we are. i think it is a landmark. if anything had to come up, i would definitely nominate it as one. the other examples of carville houses, there's one on 47th avenue where the cars have been basically removed and all you've really got left is perhaps the floors of a couple of cars. it was a great example until, i guess, the late 1950's. and whoever bought house decided to take out most of the woodwork. that might be the only one, the one on great highway. >> i mentioned one of the problems with plumbing with these carville homes. i was wondering at what point in history did outhouses become illegal in san francisco? >> i'm not sure of that. but outhouses w

the number one most by a friendly city -- bike-friendly city in the country [applause] >> supervisor mirkarimi, do you want to say few words? strong champion of our bike program. >> thank you. we just jam from the budget committee to get over here. i would not miss this for the world. i just heard someone echo mayor newsom's comments about how san francisco aims to be and is serious about being extremely bike-friendly, and this is a challenge to the rest of the united states that this is an urban pledge and one that we will see no retreat to. i'm absolutely delighted to be here today to see us moving forward. the only time of the three-year paralysis due to the bike in junction where we were able to successfully see some injunctive relief was in my district, the fifth district, where the city benefited from the first installation of a dedicated bike light. we're all very appreciative of that innovation as well as when we put in a new bike lane. they are what is called the we go, a great bike route that goes in throughout district 5. today, this is about making it city-wide and making

, the work force of the city. we're a city and county so we're different to be compared to another city jurisdiction like oakland. oakland, their budget for police and fire, 75% of their entire budget is police and fire. that's not san francisco. we have so many other departments in parts of our budget so we're very distinct so to have an apples to apples comparison to the city of san francisco to other places is not exactly accurate because there are so many other functions we have because we're a city and county that make our budget look so much bigger but there's so much work being done over the years for me, working with my colleagues on the board, 11 colleagues, it's the biggest challenge of my life to make sure we're all in agreement on how we'll finalize the budget because we're seeing services that are essential to our communities being cut all across the city and it's very challenging. >> thank you for that. commissioner o'brien: i think it would be helpful to have an understanding at least of how much of

that's to the city and county of san francisco. in addition, every two years, if a develop has h.u.d. money it must file such a report or similar report with h.u.d. we know exactly how many people and what qualifications they have and whether or not they meet the requirements of the development of housing. that's how we provide housing in san francisco. we provide housing to people at certain income levels. and the city tasks to make sure that those people continue to meet those income levels. it is a base misstatement of fact that a, that information has not been given to you and b, that somehow it has escaped our minds. second of all, it isn't 50% of the housing that is subsidized in san francisco. folks, it's 100%. the largest housing subsidy in this country is mortgaged tax deduction. 100% of the housing market in this country is subsidized by the federal and state government. so why do you want to point out or hold out affordable housing as being somehow subsidized and not somehow paying its way is absurd. all housing in this
