good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes, it looks like it will be a long road ahead for officer todd young. the good news, he's been upgraded from critical condition to serious condition. that came from a nursing supervisor here at highland hospital. we also have witnessed the steady stream of people to visit him. there was a fremont officer here this morning even before the sun came up coming to the hospital. he didn't talk this morning. you have to remember this has been a very difficult time for family, friends and the law enforcement community. officer young has made it through two surgeries. but there's still a long road ahead. the fremont police chief telling the "chronicle" that young has talked to his children and his wife has been at his side. he's been heavily sedated through this process. it's pretty clear that while he's already had two surgeries he will need more. certainly in these type of situations people feel helpless. so when this situation arose, people rose to the occasion and gave 60-pints of blood.

claudine wong is there now with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, school starts at trace elementary around 8:30 this morning and it will be a first day unlike any other. they will be dealing with portable classrooms and a new way to do business thanks to a fire. take a look across the street along that fence there are signs that welcome the kids back and talk about fund- raising efforts still underway. there is a big effort here today to make sure that kids and teachers and staff know this community is behind them. there have been efforts to spruce things up here. 2/3 of the campus was destroyed in the fire that means kids will have to come pack to portable classrooms, a temporary cafeteria and bathrooms. many teachers lost most of their supplies but they say the outpouring has been overwhelming. intel doe faithed a thousand dollars to each teacher. parents have launched a facebook campaign to try to win a contest. teachers say they are overwhelmed by the outpouring. >> excited and anxious, you know. >> even though this has just been a horrible
