the dmv here, one of the organizations known for long lines already. so bad news for anybody who is planning on doing business today at state offices like the dmv because today it is closed. for about 144,000 state workers, it's a mandatory day off without pay. it was pay. the courts will review whether the governor has the authority to mandate unpaid days off. the governor has won the latest round. that means losing almost 5% of their monthly pay for each day off. here are the furlough days this month. today, next friday, the 27th. and one floating furlough between now and the end of the month. the governor's spokesman says that will save the state almost $140 million per month in payroll costs. the issue goes back to the supreme court on september 8. the governor says this will all end if the state passes a budget. of course, that is another story completely. we'll talk a little more about that coming up in the next half hour. >> anne makovec in san mateo, thank you. >>> 11,000 law enforcement agencies are starting special enforcement efforts today.
