jeff ranieri is standing by. the weekend is coming our way. >> it's been pretty comfortable throughout this past week but for the past month or so it's been all about the summer time cooling. san jose the coolest since 1958 when it comes to july temperatures. santa rosa in the top five coolest for summer so far and san jose now ranking in the top ten at number nine. so we'll likely see more records as we continue throughout this cooling trend that looks to stay in place over the next five days or so. you thought it was cool yesterday? well, we've already dropped another five to six degrees in the past 24 hours here for our inland spots and that certainly is a sign that this is not going to be going anywhere as we head into tomorrow's forecast. here is the marine layer offshore at about 2,000 feet so that's already starting to push back in to our interior sections right now. only 61 in san francisco. 72 in redwood city. just 75 in san jose. 77 in livermore. 66 in san rafael. 72 for your high there in napa. overall

i'm jeff ranieri. another mild day. cooler than average temperatures. 79 in san jose and cooler as spring holds on in our seven-day forecast. >>> it is the tough eesttoughese nation, but getting plastic bags could get harder. >> one of america's great athletes. jerry rice telling us what keeps him in the bay area. >>> pushing the plastic. san francisco wants to expand ban on plastic bags in the city. three years ago the city banned single use plastic bags at supermarkets and chain stores. there was legislation introduced tonight to make that ban apply to all retailers in the city. the ban would impose five cent fees on paper bags. if approved the new legislation would go into effect march of next year. >>> savage sacrifice? an investigation into decapitated animals. a jogger found three goats with their heads cut off. chicken feathers were found near the bodies. animal control officers are investigating the case. they say it appears the animals were not killed there but the remains were boxed and dumped along the trail.

i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. something to smile about. we're finally getting sunshine here in san francisco. it's 69 right now. we'll tell you in widespread 80s will return coming up. joof tonight, a minnesota man is free after spending more than two years in prison for a crash that killed three people. the man was driving a toyota camry and has said he did everything he could to stop his car and after the recent toyota recalls he is now a free man. >> it's over! it's over! >> he has always maintained he stepped on the brakes on june 10th, 2006, but that his 1996 toyota camry would not stop. it slammed into another car killing three people. a jury convicted him of criminal vehicular homicide. >> thank you. >> lee asked for a new trial this year arguing that it was a case of sudden acceleration and today, judge joanne smith granted the new trial saying that there was new evidence that his original trial attorney made mistakes. >> and the soon as she started to read and give an indication of what she was going to do i wrote out a paper, "yo

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri with a look at what's ahead. what a change so quickly, too. >> yeah, certainly as we titled it, weather whiplash, most appropriate especially as we head into the weekend. we did have those record-setting temperatures in the triple digits once again today. livermore, san jose and concord were some of the hottest. and already dropping dramatically. 50s and 60s from the coast to our inland spots. some 30 to 40 degrees from those daytime highs. when you look at the overall trend, though, we're down about 10 to 20 degrees across the bay area and fog and the cooling on-shore winds rolled in. that's part one. now, the second part of the story is this area of high pressure and heat. that moves into the southwest. and is going to make way for this cooling trough to move across the bay area. this jet stream's going to take more of a dip that you would see in fall here across the bay area. o friday, 70s, nd staying with us. and saturday, that's when the cool air and fogill combine together for temperatures some 10 to 20 deg
