i'm julie haener -- with a drug suspect. good evening. i'm julie haener. >> we have word on the condition of that freemont police officer. doctors say he's in critical condition but has stablized after being shot twice by a drug suspect. more on the officer in a moment. right now, though, a manhunt is underway for this man, 20-year- old andrew barrientos of union city. police say he is the one who pulled the trigger. officers describe barrientos as 5' 7 tall, 240 pounds with the word dakota tattooed on his neck and arms. investigators say after shooting the officer barrientos carjacked a green mazda 626 with a california license plate no. 4mje548. police are still looking for the car at this hour. now all of this happened near 86th and bran croft in east oakland as two officer -- bancroft in east oakland as two officers were serving a warrant on barrientos about 2:30 this afternoon. we have ktvu mike mibach at the hospital but we begin, though, with amber lee. >> reporter: we're at the oakland police department eastmont substation. inside

i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. it's back, the bay area's natural airconditioning is turned on tonight. the fog started rolling in late this afternoon rapidly cooling off coastal locations such as san francisco. and signaling an easing of the extreme heat being felt in a lot of communities away from the water. ktvu's heather holmes is live in walnut creek tonight where the temperature soared over 100 degrees. and chief meteorologist bill martin is here to explain the dramatic change in the temperatures. >> yes, sure the fog came in. and the records yesterday and a heat advisory yesterday. we had a spare the air day. today's temperatures oakland 76 down 22 degrees. san francisco down 22 degrees from yesterday. napa is down 15. but look at concord and fairfield. away from the cooling effects of the marine layer, the moist air coming off the coast, the temperatures were actually up 4 degrees in fairfield, 1 degrees in concord. so definitely cooling down and that is the bay area weather story. the fog is back. >>> now,

. >> and i'm julie haener. calfire tells us about 375 acres have burned since this fire was first reported at 4:00 this afternoon. the fire is burning just outside the boundaries of mount diablo state park. now let's bring in a map. it's burning along morgan territory road. this is a rugged and remote area about eight to 10 miles south of clayton. the fire right now is 50% contained. however the aerial fight has stopped since the sun went down. there are some home, ranches andout buildings in the area. one home was threatened but saved. there are no evacuation orders. the terrain is mostly grass. >> pretty much throughout the night and through the morning. we have more crews coming over to have relief grews coming in to relieve the rues that are on scene. >> reporter: several hundred firefighters are on the lines tonight.they tell us a downed power line most likely sparked this fire. wind áf one positive for firefighters, winds are light. >>> pg & e tell us that 57 customers are without power near mount diablo

. >> and i'm heather holmes in for julie haener. >>> the fire is about five miles north of calistoga. the chp shut down highway 29 in both directions when the fire started at about 52:00 this -- 5:00 this evening. the fire is burning near robert louis stevenson state park. the fire consumed about a dozen acres by night fall. the highway patrol reopened highway 29 between napa and lake counties. firefighters say they claimed to remain on the front lines overnight to keep the flames from spreading. right now, that fire is about 40% contained. so far, there is no indication of just how it started but, again, cal fire says it has stopped thefire's forward spread. >> ktvu's meteorologist bill martin is in now to show us how the weather is helping the firefight >> reporter: the weather is everything. here we are in august. you would think a fire like this would be a huge, huge deal but look at the current conditions at the fire right now. we rarely see something like this. the winds are just 10 miles per hour. look at the temperatures, 53 degrees, the humidity at 83% may be double or triple

i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. it's back, the bay area's natural airconditioning is turned on tonight. the fog started rolling in late this afternoon rapidly cooling off coastal locations such as san francisco. and signaling an easing of the extreme heat being felt in a lot of communities away from the water. ktvu's heather holmes is live in walnut creek tonight where the temperature soared over 100 degrees. and chief meteorologist bill martin is here to explain the dramatic change in the temperatures. >> yes, sure the fog came in. and the records yesterday and a heat advisory yesterday. we had a spare the air day. today's temperatures oakland 76 down 22 degrees. san francisco down 22 degrees from yesterday. napa is down 15. but look at concord and fairfield. away from the cooling effects of the marine layer, the moist air coming off the coast, the temperatures were actually up 4 degrees in fairfield, 1 degrees in concord. so definitely cooling down and that is the bay area weather story. the fog is back. >>> now,
