i'm lynn berry. and today we begin with the long road home. more than seven years after the u.s.-led invasion of iraq began, it's now the beginning of the end of the american mission there. yesterday, the last u.s. combat brigade left iraq. although some combat troops do remain, according to the government, the departure marks a long-awaited milestone on the american war front. nbc's richard engel made the journey with the brigade and filed this report last night from the iraq/kuwait border. >> reporter: a short while ago we watched the last american combat troops cross through this gate, leaving iraq and entering here in kuwait. they were from the 4-2 stryker brigade based at ft. lewis in washington state. they call themselves the raiders, and now they have a special place in the history of the iraq war. >> we're going home! >> reporter: they were the last 440 american combat troops to leave iraq and enter kuwait. >> it feels great to know that we were -- that this battalion, the first of the 38th i

i'm lynn berry. and today we begin with try, try again. prosecutors say they're planning a retrial in the corruption case against rod blagojevich after a deadlocked jury agreed on only one of 24 counts. blagojevich could face a maximum of five years in prison and a $25,000 fine for the single guilty charge. still the ousted politician-turned celebrity is calling it a victory. nbc's leanne gregg has the story. >> governor, are you concerned about what's to come, governor? >> reporter: rod blagojevich, back home and greeted with celebrity fanfare after a jury's decision on his alleged political corruption crime spree. after two weeks of deliberations on 24 charges, a mistrial on all but one count. >> this jury just shows you that notwithstanding the fact that the government threw everything but the kitchen sink at me, that on every count except for one, on every charge except for one, they could not prove that i did anything wrong. >> reporter: the jury did find blagojevich guilty of lying to the fbi.

i'm lynn berry. and today we begin with another delay. bp had hoped to begin testing its plan to pump massive amounts of mud into the blown out well in the gulf of mexico, but now frustration is mounting as the so-called static kill, a plan bp hopes will seal the stopped up well for good, is on hold again. for more on this, we go to nbc's kristen dahlgren in venice, louisiana. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, lynn. at this point we were supposed to at least be close to the start of that so-called static kill, but they found a hydraulic leak as they were about to do that last key test, so now they have to fix that before they can move forward with the kill. one mile beneath the surface, one more delay. crews hope to fix a hydraulic leak today to get back to the business of sealing the well. if they're able to do that and complete one more key test, heavy mud will begin pumping through the blowout preventer, choking the macondo well from the top down. >> what you want is the press

i'm lynn berry. and today we begin with a deadly wave. less than a week before u.s. troops are set to formally end combat operations in iraq, insurgents have unleashed a series of attacks. today, six people died in an ambush outside baghdad. it came just hours after coordinated attacks that killed at least 56 people yesterday. police say the more than two dozen bombings and shootings targeted security forces throughout the country, shaking confidence in their ability to take over responsibility for iraq and weaken al qaeda. meanwhile, president obama will deliver a prime time speech from the oval office next tuesday to mark the official end of u.s. combat operations in iraq. the address will take place after the president visits with troops in ft. bliss, texas. >>> alaska senator lisa murkowski is struggling to avoid becoming the seventh congressional incumbent to be pushed out of office this year. with all precincts reporting, murkowski is trailing challenger joe miller by nearly 1,700 votes, althou

i'm lynn berry. today we begin with serial killer terror. a multi-state manhunt is under way for a knife-wielding suspect believed to be behind a string of deadly attacks. police in michigan have released a sketch of a white man they believe is responsible for the stabbings of 15 men, almost all of them black, in the flint area. five of the stabbings were fatal. authorities in virginia believe the suspect may also be responsible for three violent incidents in leesburg. they say they don't know if he's targeting black men or if he simply encounters them while walking late at night. police are not yet ready to call the attacks racially motivated. >>> a former stealth bomber engineer faces life in prison after being convicted of selling u.s. military secrets to china. yesterday a federal jury in hawaii found noshir gowadia guilty on multiple counts, including helping china design a stealth cruise missile. prosecutors say the 66-year-old passed on design information that would allow missiles to avoid inf

i'm lynn berry. and today we begin with a nightmare that is finally over. that's how a u.s. marshal described yesterday's capture of the last of three inmates who escaped from an arizona prison and his alleged accomplice. police say john mccluskey and his fiancee and cousin casslyn welch were arrested after an alert forest ranger spotted their stolen vehicle at a campground in northeastern arizona, then called in the s.w.a.t. team. >> mr. mccluskey was lying down on the campground. he was taken into custody, and he made a statement at that time or a few minutes later that if he had gotten back to the tent, there was a gun there and that he would have killed the officers involved. >> they were the target of a three-week nationwide manhunt after welch allegedly helped mccluskey cut through the prison security fence. after their escape, police say both suspects were linked to the slayings of a couple on vacation in new mexico. the other two inmates who escaped with mccluskey were recaptured earlier this
