right, pam? i mean, i think it's-it's not only to get them to understand recovery and addiction, etc., and the whole continuum, but really to get them to be supportive and not to give up. that's right. so many times families, by the time they're interested in learning about this, are already dealing with a family member who has disrupted the family, who they've had to separate from, who has turned up homeless, and they're very worried about them or any other way in which the family feels assaulted by that process. so it's really important for them to get hope, it's really important for them to understand that things can be better, it's important to understand that they can get some support as family members. so all of these things are critical, and frankly there is no better advocate than a convinced family member for treatment programs, for science, for all of the things, for people than family members. and what type of resources are out there, tom and pam and alexandre and james, for individual

i'm pam cook. time is 6:30. >>> passengers speaking out this morning about the terrifying emergency landing at sfo overnight. ktvu here now with more on the investigation and what caused the engine of that plane to explode. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. f.a.a. investigators will most likely arrive around 8:00 this morning. they are going to try to determine exactly what went wrong aboard the flight bound for australia. now for the 231 passengers on board there were some extremely scary moments about half an hour after take off. the plane had departed for sydney around 11:00 and then just as everyone was getting settled the captain announced that one of the engines had blown out. you can see a large gash in the engine there. passengers on one-half of the plane had full view of it when the pilot decided to turn the plane around and head back to san francisco. >> the people on the right hand side of the plane seemed very shocked and apparently there were some flames coming

i'm pam cook. we want to get to our top story right away. this morning fire crews in the east bay are slowly [ audio problems ] wild fire. the curry fire is burning in the foothills just east of mt. diablo. now it's burned about 375 acres since it was first reported late yesterday afternoon. it is now 50% contained. ktvu's craig at the command center this morning. craig, what can you tell us? >> reporter: okay. here we are in eastern contra costa county. we're having a couple technical issues. we're just going to tell you what we're doing out here and where we are. right now we're about 100 yards away from the ic. that's the incident command center for this curry fire. i want to turn around and show you but i'm not sure how many lights we have. might see some taillights off in the distance. above the taillights and up on the hill there's a brief speck of flames of there. may not be able to see that too well either. that is because firefighters have actually made some good progress overnight. not ju
