tara moriarty is live in san francisco with the latest. tara? >> reporter: well, jana, this is a horribly tragic event that unfolded near union square. a german tourist was walking back to her hotel with her husband, they were walking hand in hand, had she was killed. the san francisco police confirmed they've detained five people and they have a weapon in custody. now, they say that they are extremely angry about last night's shooting on the00 block -- in the 400 block of mesa near geary. just after 9:00, the shooting occurred. the woman was hospital and she died at the hospital. two others, a man and woman, were shot but sustained non- life-threatening injuries. we spoke to the german consulate here in san francisco this morning. he said he's shocked and saddened by the incident. >> we're very surprised because we know that we live in a very safe city and in a very safe area but that can happen if you are at the wrong time at the wrong place, it may happen. >> reporter: san francisco police say they are investigating pursuing this case. invest

tara moriarty joins us live now with the latest. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: well, good afternoon, tori. we are learning more information about the suspect, described as a 29-year-old from east contra costa county with an extensive criminal record. that record ended today when he allegedly shot a police dog. >>> police released these cell phone images of thor, an eight year veteran of the police department. you can see two red shots where a bullet entered and exited. >> there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the officers. the suspect was hit. he was pronounced deceased at the scene. none of the officers were injured however the canine was shot. >> reporter: officials say he was trying to apprehend a burglar when he was shot. his handler and another officer pulled the trigger on a prowler. the cosh near wheeled out his body this morning. the ordeal began around 1:00 this morning when he broke into a house. he had piled up a bunch of appliances when police stormed in. within minutes dozens more officers swarme

tear ya motherktvu's tara moriarty is live. good morning, , tara. >> the bottom of the building is a restaurant. police responded to the call on 12th avenue and 12th street. police found two men running from the scene. they confiscated more than 120 marijuana plants as well as some sophisticated growing equipment. the first suspect was apprehended as he tried jump a fence in the back. the second suspect was found on a nearby roof top. police sent their canine after him and after not complying with police demands, the dog hit the suspect several time he was treated at the scene and taken to jail. we spoke to the first suspect after the arrest. >> i was smoking a cigarette. they came in and said, what are you doing? i said talking to my girlfriend and that's all that happened. >> reporter: again, police came out to this aledged pot house two years ago, around the same time, when two men were trying to break in and steal marijuana. a lot of similarity between the two cases and police say it is extremely frustrating. they told us t

tara moriarty is in that area where the shooting happened and has the latest on that version. morning tara. >> reporter: that mother called ktvu wanting to share her side of the story. she is contradicting what police say happened here monday night. if you look behind me you can see there is a small bit of candles outside the road. it unfolded 8:30 when gladys said she called 911, her 21- year-old son edgar was getting unruly, he suffered from mental illness and had been drinking and refusing to take his medication that day. she called a social worker but was advised to call authorities instead. when two officers arrived they say edgar would not cooperate with him. they say they shot him with a stun gun, but didn't strike. he then continued to lung at police with a large serrated steak knife. that is when they shot and killed him outside the house. gladys tells a much different story, she says her son didn't have a weapon and police shouldn't have shot him. now the district attorney general's office as well as the burial game police department is launching their own investigat

tara moriarty joins us now with an update. >> reporter: good morning. authorities say that a burglar shot one of their police dogs while he was inside of a home. they say that suspect paid the ultimate price with his life. it happened around 1:15 this morning near d and lotten streets. a neighbor reported a break in and the burglar was inside the house when police arrived. gunfire erupted, the suspect was shot and killed. the canine was also shot aside his handler. >> he was one of the officers involved in this incident and he was the person that transported the animal to the vet. he's very relieved that his canine is going to survive. >> reporter: dozens of investigators have sworn the -- swarmed the area here. it is standard protocol to have this many involved when it is an officer shooting. you can look at it, it's the big white truck parked behind the group of trees there. you can see is that officers are milling around the area. the body is still inside the house. we have not seen the coroner arrive yet on scene. we are still checking on train serv

live in burlingame, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> san jose police are investigating two stabbings to see if they could be connected. the first one happened last night at payne avenue and south winchester boulevard. police say a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were stabbed in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. for one victim the injuries are life-threatening. an hour later a 34-year-old san jose man was stabbed near story drive. he is expected to survive. police believe the attacks are gang related. the investigation continues. >>> an geeviction is scheduled today for the san francisco dance club where a man was killed last month. the lease for jelly's club was terminated after lee farlly was shot to death outside the club. post say it started with an argument inside the dance club but officials for jelly's denies that. attorneys for the club say that jelly's will continue operating despite the eviction notice, the issue is expected to end up in court. >> santa crew sheriff's deputies say a theyer was used on a man who they say resisted arrest during a court hearing.
