and andrea fujii is working the story. an drey yay -- andrea. >> reporter: i just spoke with one of the police spokespersons and said they have no reports that the suspect was in custody and is still being looked for. all he is saying is the doctor is in critical condition. what we do know about 11:15, 11:30, a man walked into the nelson building and shot a doctor who is now in critical condition and in surgery. the hospital remains on lockdown. the streets surrounding johns hopkins continue to be closed off and there's a lot of pandemonium. that gives the indication they are still looking for someone. a police pio said there are no reports out that a suspect was in custody and remains at large. so we're kind of in the dark as to what happened early this morning. all we know that a doctor was shot and he or she is in critical condition. >> while you were talking we were looking at the police s.w.a.t. theme or sharp shooter get

andrea fujii has more on the democratic contest. and derek valcourt is live downtown on the developing news for the city state's attorney. good morning, derek. >> reporter: no one's claiming victory yet in this case and we'll look at the numbers. challenger bernstein is up with 29,000 votes. jessamy has 28,000 votes. the problem is, there are still several thousand of the uncounted and early votes. and all of the votes could make a major difference and that's why, right now, the race is too close to call. as the results begin trickling in, bernstein greeted supporters. >> public safety is a right and people appreciate that and that's why we've gotten the level of support that we have. >> reporter: his support is the strongest opposition jessamy faced. >> we're confident that the voters elected the best person. so, we'll await the return. >> reporter: jessamy spent much of her campaign playing defense as bernstein launched aggressive attacks. people are getting away from murder because jessamy failed to convict them. >> reporter: ber

mike schuh and andrea fujii has reaction. we begin with derek valcourt for an update on the identity of the gunman. >> reporter: police identified him as 50-year-old paul warren hardis of arlington, virginia. he has been responsible for creating hours of chaos here at one of the world's most prominent hospitals. police say just after 11:00 this morning, a patient's son became emotionally distraught as a doctor explained to him his mother's medical condition. the son then pulled out a gun and shot the doctor. >> collapsed outside the doorway of the room, and mr. davis was last seen running into the room brandishing the handgun in the direction of his mother, who's confined to the bed. >> reporter: hospital employees were alerted to the danger as dozens of patients and employees were evacuated. police secured the eighth floor as they tried to establish contact with davis and allowed business as usual to continue in the rest of the massive complex until police finally determined davis had shot his mother in the head and then too

we continue with andrea fujii. she's been on the scene all day and joins us now with reaction to the situation. andrea? >> reporter: good afternoon. you can see things are relatively back to normal. earlier today, these streets were blocked off and people are now traveling freely up and down east madison. take a look at what was happening earlier this afternoon. earlier, workers and visitors and just people were milling around not knowing what was going on. many inside buildings were told to stay put. some were told there was a gunman nearby, but with no details, they were scared. listen to what some had to say. >> that a doctor had been shot and they secured the suspect in one area. >> reporter: what was the mood when you were locked in there for an hour? >> it's hot in there and a lot of attention. >> they said that the hospital's been shut down. they turned me away. >> reporter: i also spoke with a johns hopkins x-ray technician who's worked here for 20 years. he says nothing like this has ever happened before.

andrea fujii has the latest on the investigation and jessica kartalija has reaction from a witness. first, we'll go to andrea who was among one of the first reporters yesterday. >> >> reporter: good morning, don and everyone. this happened after a doctor gave bad medical news to the son of a patient here at johns hopkins. that caused the suspect to snap. frenzied few hours inside and outside the 8th floor of the building. >> they just locked everything down. >> reporter: the s.w.a.t. teams and battle gear race to the scene and the surgeon had just delivered bad news to a 50- year-old, about his mother's condition. and police say he game distraught and pulled out a handgun and shot the doctor. >> last seen running into the room, brandishing the handgun in the direction of his mother who was confined to the bed. >> reporter: the doctor was rushed into surgery with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. the police evacwaited the particular and scram -- and scrambled to get the gunman. i work at the hospital. we got a message that we had to go in the offices and shut and long lock the doors. >

andrea fujii is live outside the federal courthouse. >> good morning, don. prosecutors say that this man not only lured the 12-year-old into prostitution, he threatened to kill her. already in jail for prostitution, he had a federal prosecutors throw the book at him. the charge is sex trafficking of a minor. >> a 12-year-old was enticed by a 42-year-old man. according to the same. he took the girl from maryland to atlantic city and sold her services eight times and brought her back to a laurel hotel. the prosecutors say he threatened to shoot her if she left. >> he was accused of running essentially a brothel. >> he eventually left the girl alone in room 319 and she called her mom and the police arrived. it's fortunate that the girl was found quickly and they were able to get her the support she needed. >> she was promised a large home and a top position. and when he left her at the hotel, he went to his family's home. there was eight kids here. six of them girls. >> he never told the neighbors what he did nor his name. they only knew him as smitty. he's in
