farm bureau federation. >> welcome back to "california country." >> here in california, the landscape is dotted with farmers that have stories of courage, dedication, and perseverance in the face of adversity. however, none have quite the history of the ikeda family. but to see how far they have come, you first have to see where they've been. in thearly part of the twentieth century, many of the hills above the arroyo grande area were farmed by japanese families who planted a variety of crops each spring. together they banded together to form pove, the pismo oceano vegetable exchange, which was highly successful until world events hit this small coastal community in the 1940s. >> before the war, it was probably between 40 and 45 members of pismo oceano vegetable exchange. during the war, all the japanese families got shipped off to internment camps further inland, main to utah and arizona. and during that time, there was an alien exclusion act in which aliens couldn't own land. so you either had to buy land through a child who was a citizen or have some other citizen buy the land and

[captioning made possible by california farm bureau federation] >> so we all know that california is king when it comes to growing citrus. and when it comes to growing lemons, no one is bigger than this ventura county farm. and with over 7,000 acres of lush lemon trees, limoneira isn't just the biggest lemon grower in california, but in all of north america. based in santa paula, the farm is a testament to what hard work and determination can do. foundi fathers nathan blanchard and wallace hardison first bought the land way back in 1893 and named the ranch limoneira, which means "lemon lands" in portuguese. >> and at the time, they wanted to bring about the first full-scale commercial operation citrus ranch in the u.s. and from there, we added, throughout the years, over the last 115-16 years, 3 other families have come into the fold, and that's where we've grown today to be our 7,000 acres that we are in california. >> once called the home of the lemon, it actually took 15 years before those first farmers ev turned a profit at the limoneira farm. but they persevered, and as they say

through the last five years, the unions in california have spent over $3 million in politics in california. but i think californians are really smart. i don't think you can buy elections. i think californians are too smart. what you can do is get your message out and tell californians what your view is of the way forward, and that is what i have tried to do. i want to get jobs going again in california. i have three really important priorities. jobs being one, governor efficiency being number, and getting our schools back in order. it is not okay that our schools are rated near the bottom of the barrel. so that's what i have done. invested my own money so that i have the independence. i said earlier, you know what? that independence allows me to go to sacramento, break glass, change how things are done there. you know, if you want someone who will just go along and not really fundamentally change what is wrong with sacramento, then i'm not your candidate. we have got to fundamentally change how this state runs. we have to redo how the budget is done. we have to think about how to spend mon

finally, california will get it right in with this. this project that so many people have talked about will finally start to take shape. the fourth thing we are celebrating go to my first point, leadership. stewardship. we would not be here if it was not the work for willie brown and others. don perotta and his extraordinary work. members of the board of supervisors that have come and gone. past mayors, incredible leadership from caltran, mtc, to all the folks that you see here, and in particular, secretary ray lahood, who stepped up to the plate and follow through on a commitment to steer a significant amount of funds our way. to barbara boxer as well, who has proven it is not just words that create jobs, but follow- through. it is about the leadership and the extension of past mayors, the good work of george miller, all the folks that that in four dimensions. let me conclude by saying that at the end of the day, all of that matters a lot come but it is simply not enough. the only way to cross the finish line, the only reason that we
