we go, now, to john berman on montauk, on the eastern end of long island, the way earl is affecting things there. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. well, no wind here yet but some serious waves. this beach i'm standing on right now is one of the best surf spots on the entire east coast. we have no surfers here. several came by and they said, not me. not today. the waves are already ten feet high in some cases. one of the big concerns on beaches like this is erosion. when the storm gets going, the water will come up and cover the entire beach. cover where i'm standing. go past even where our camera is set up. and the concern is, we could lose some of this beach permanently. one other concern in this part of long island, power. they could lose power here. they're staging 1,600 extra utility workers nearby to repair these lines if they go down and get the power back up as soon as they can. george? >> john, thanks. >>> we're going to cape cod. the storm could come closest to shore there. and linsey davis, it looks great. it looks calm and beautiful now. but officials ar

that's where we find john berman, on eastern long island this morning. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the storm isn't due to pass by these parts for a couple days. but already today, they'll start moving these cans and chairs off these beaches. anything that might fly away. there is a sense of urgency here, with officials practically begging the public to pay attention. it throttled parts of the caribbean. and now, it threatens a huge swath of the northeast. emergency command centers are switching into high gear. >> we're watching it like a hawk, day by day and hour by hour. >> reporter: why? take a look at suffolk county, new york. 900 miles of coastline, nearly 1.5 million people. the blue area shows how a storm like earl could bring coastal flooding to a huge swath of people if it swings close by. the new jersey shore, with 1.5 million people. >> we're going to be extra vigilant. >> reporter: in cape cod, massachusetts, with more than 200,000 full-time residents, and a population that explodes on a holiday weekend. and one of th
