kristen dahlgren just back from a well-deserved vacation and is life in kill devils, north carolina. are people paying attention to the evacuation orders? >> reporter: well, it really depends. we're just learning this morning about new evacuation orders for visitors here along north carolina's outer banks. but as you can see there are still people out here checking things out this morning. but they are running out of time to get out of here and to get their last-minute preparations because earl expected to be at its worst here along the outer banks sometime overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. we have talked a lot about the track of this storm. as you said, a few degrees would make a difference. maximum sustained winds 145 miles per hour. so a direct hit could be devastating. but think about this -- either way those hurricane force winds extend out 90 miles from the center of the storm. tropical storms for winds extend out 200 miles. it's a huge area that will be feeling the effects of this storm. there are watches and warnings now in effect from north carolina all the way up to
