white house chief of staff rahm emanuel out the door friday. going back to run for mayor of chicago. and emanuel is not the only one. president obama's inner circle, the chicago mafia, who is leaving or left the administration. senior adviser david axelrod plans to return to chicago after the midterms to start working on the president's re-election campaign. president's economic team also pretty much history. larry summers, head of the national economic council, going back to harvard. peter orszag, budget director, christina romer, head of the council of economic adviser, they both left. over at the defense department, secretary robert gates also served under george bush. suggesting he plans to step down some time before president obama's first term over. of course, working for any administration, very tough job. the hours long and the pressure intense. it is not unusual to see a lot of turnover in these positions. in president obama's case, approval numbers are sinking and his party faces an uphill battle in the midterm elections. he now has a

happening very quickly. >> too early to talk about who might replace rahm emanuel? >> no, it's washington. people throw names out all the time. in all seriousness there are serious names looked at. tom donlan is one. a deputy of national security adviser here. he is well-known in democratic and political circles. ron claim vice-president to biden. worked in the clinton white house and did donlan and shapiro the current liaison to capitol hill has contacts that rahm menwell has been able to use. stimulus and health care and other things passed. there are a lot of names mostly insiders in that close circle that the president has. valerie jarrett is talked about and she is somebody who is close not just to the president but the first lady. i'm hearing the other names i mentioned are more likely. valerie jarrett likes where she is right now and feels she is valuable to the president in that role. i think it's hard to overstate what a monumental loss this will be for the president because rahm emanuel is the glue here. he has been controversial and some liberals think he

rahm emanuel leaving the without, we have paul begallo and alex costianos. he's advising the gop campaigns and paul advises the democratic campaigns. paul, what about it? rahm emanuel leaving? what do you make of it? >> i think it's highly likely. he's talking to his close friends and i'm one of them. the president, when -- i think he's pretty certain that he's running for mayor. the president will lose his right arm. the guy, without rahm, we'll have a rough time. i don't think we'll have wall street reform. we wouldn't have had the stimulus pa kang, now pretty unpopular with a lot of americans but it saved millions of jobs and probably kept us from going into a great depression. rahm has been the right arm of the president. >> he's known as a pragmatist, a level-headed guy. why wouldn't you want to be mayor of chicago as opposed to staying in washington. there's so much more political longevity in chicago. you can stay politically active there even after you die so it's a great retirement system. but it's going to be interesting to see who he is replaced w

emanuel, asking them about a possible deal involving a job offer. are you going to spend your time doing that? >> as i said, when governor rendell said this is typical, it goes on, a member of the press team said similar things happened under the bush administration. what we discovered is that laws on the books to prevent this ree teenly are not considered to apply. as part of reform, it's not a matter of looking back.

the white house is also expecting rahm emanuel to leave the use to run for mayor of chicago. >> if rahm emanuel leaves, he will be the fourth of president obama's closest advisers to have left since july. question, after 20 months, is this presidential staff turnover normal? pat buchanan. >> this is not terribly unusual if you have a presidency in trouble. john, when you came into the white house, '71, john connolly came in, dave kennedy was out. nixon closed the goal window, let the dollar flow. he sent arthur burns to the federal reserve. they gunned the money supply to $23 billion deficits. that was enormously dramatic in terms of a change. this is nothing like that. rahm is going out there because there's an opening for mayor's office and secondly, because he has been hammered and had a bad time. but i don't think this is extraordinarily unusual. i don't see any signs of panic here. >> a vietnam war on his hands. >> nixon, our election was disappointing and he took that big move. john connolly was lyndon johnson's man that had taken texas away from him. that is a big, big -- >> how

we reported last week on this program that rahm emanuel is likely to leave the white house in october at some point and that pete rouse, a top white house aide and really goes far back with this president, he was chief of staff to then senator barack obama, pete rouse also goes back far with tom daschle, he had been chief of staff there so he's very well known, sort of behind the scenes. not really a big public figure, but he's expected to be sort of the interim chief of staff when rahm emanuel leaves. it could happen as early as friday, by the way, because rahm emanuel is really up against some big deadlines here. he's got november 22nd where you've got to get the signatures to basically get on the ballot. then you've got a february 22nd primary. there are a lot of other democrats looking at this race. and so while, you know, here in washington there's this expectation that rahm emanuel is this giant political figure and maybe this is going to be a slam dunk, this is going to be difficult. and i remember a few weeks back when all of this -- when mayor daley first announced he was goi

what it means, a lot of politics, controversy around rahm emanuel. what it means for the president, it's part of the changing of the guard inside the white house. his economic team has largely left. his national security adviser will probably leave right after the election. he faces a big choice. he's have an interim chief of staff then face a choice after the elections. do you pick somebody else from within who's been with you all the way back from the 2008 campaign or do you go outside and pick somebody, maybe somebody with better relationships with republicans? we don't know how many seats the republicans are going to win in november. we do know they will win more seats. do you try to go inside or outside? that's the big debate in washington. most expect the president will pick somebody from within his inner circle, though. >> i know you've got some stuff you want to tell us about this crossing. i want your feedback on that story since we were just getting that confirmed. what else is crossing? >> a big crossing today, it's related to the subject
