and she wednesday night called the election of vincent gray devastating for the school children. were you surprised to hear those words used? >> i was surprised to hear her say that. i think it was an unfortunate statement. but she has made clear over the campaign that she was very pro- . and it is not surprising that she selected her. >> you make a good point since you did appoint her. they work closely together. they were very like-minded in terms of what needed to be done in schools and how it needed to be done. but generally speaking, don't they all want the same thing for d.c. school children? >> absolutely. and one thing that is easily forgotten is that it took a council vote, led by chairman gray to give mayoral control to the mayor. and extraordinary powers to the chancellor. he supported that. he supports a strong chancellor. and he will not go back, i believe, on the reform that heb put in place. >> why is it likely that -- and i know you're not michelle reed. >> no, i'm not. >> but why is it likely -- i mean, obviously, there have been issues that have come up. much of

so why vote for vincent gray? why did they do it? >> i think people were feeling it was time for a change. not only in leadership style in the mayor's office but looking at issues maybe a little bit dimpley. i think people were feeling marginalized, disenfranchised, like they weren't part of the process. that they were boxed out in a lot of ways and i think when you look at the fact this the district had 10% unemployment rate, 30% in some parts of the city, when you see certain crime actually going up in certain parts of the city, folks were looking for someone what was going to deal with those issues for those reasons i think gray's message clicked with a lot of people. >> reporter: u.s. education secretary arne duncan didn't endorse a candidate but said the school system made preprogress since rhee became chancellor and said the progress had to continue no matter who won. gray says he wants archons lohr who is strong and will work with parents. is rhee out? do you have a list for who might be the next chancellor? >> no. i don't thi

there is no republican candidate, so it comes down to current mayor fenty and couple chair vincent gray. lenny steinhorn joins us for insight. thanks for joining us. we have been hearing for weeks that fenty is behind in the polls. how do you think this race will play out tonight? >> reporter: well, these polls are generally pretty accurate and -- >> well, these polls are generally accurate and you never been one thing, turnout. the reports suggest there is light turnout. the question is where has it been light? if it's been heavy in the northwest quadrant, then that is the advantage of fenty. if it's heavy in the southeast corridor, that's the advantage to vince gray and this is about turnout, who gets their people out and the polls will probably show that that is going to be a close race coming down to the wire. >> you bring up a good point. there is talk this race may not be decided tonight. you have the same-day registrations that could slow the final count and what would happen in a case like that? >> that would add more tension. i think our country and people are acla -- acclimate
