in antioch, ann notarangelo, cbs 5. >>> checking other headlines tonight, a candlelight vigil will be held this evening for a worker killed by a patient at napa state hospital. deputies say that jesse massey strangled a technician on hospital grounds saturday. authorities say that the 37- year-old patient robbed her of about $2 and her jewelry before he killed her. they found the items, they say, in his room. massey was arraigned on murder and robbery charges. >>> a female nurse is hospitalized tonight after being struck in the head by an inmate at the county jail in martinez. authorities say the inmate faked a seizure, then hit a nurse with a lamp and swung it at deputies who subdued him with a stun gun. >>> arson is suspected in an overnight fire that destroyed four cars and damaged apartment structures. people who lived in the hayward complex near hesperian were awakened at 4:00 a.m. and were evacuated. nobody was injured. >>> a family of a truck driver who died when his big rig went off the bay bridge has filed a lawsuit against caltrans. the relatives say that the agency and its

ann notarangelo is in dublin to explain why commuters been fit from this. hi, ann. >> reporter: right behind me is the alamo canal trail but look what happens. it ends abruptly right here. there is no way of going around 580, over 580 or under 580. but today the east bay regional park district said they have the money to extend this trail so it connects with pleasanton bart and also the iron horse trail. right now the east bay has about 200 miles of paved trails for walkers and bicyclists. it goes from brentwood to richmond to union city in pleasanton. the problem is, there are gaps where you can't walk or ride. places like right near the pleasanton bart station. >> when you look around there are no bike lanes going from this bart station out into pleasanton. >> reporter: but that's about to change. the east bay regional park district has been awarded a $10 million federal grant to connect the trails. the entire project will cost more than 4 times that but getting this money gives it a boost and a stamp of approval. >> i had the one thing that could compete

but ann notarangelo reports they say their landlord is holding them hostage. ann? >> reporter: for a woman who says enough is enough, they are not going to do that for them. they tout this as a gated community. that implies it is a secure place. but it hasn't beanie enough to stop the assaults or attempted assaults on five women since june 30th and some people are saying it is just time to move out. we did see at least one moving truck today, others i know are sure to follow because i talked to one woman who says she has already given her 30-day notice, she doesn't feel that her apartment complex has done enough to keep her safe. others may feel the same way. they are wondering why aren't there more security guards and cameras. even in some cases one young woman told me the hallways right in front of her apartment are dark in the early evening. saturday a woman was attacked outside her apartment. she fought off her attacker but then was hurt falling down the stairs. like i said, five women have been assaulted at this complex. one woman every month since june 30th.

good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. developing news from san francisco tonight where a powerful manhole explosion rocked a neighbor. two cbs5 employees heard the blast and caught it on tape. we are joined now from the explosion site with a firsthand account. what was that like? >> reporter: awful scary. we are here where the manhole cover blew off. pg&e is continuing their investigation of other areas of the line. then windows completely blown out by the blast. they are boarded up now. between clay and california it is still blockedded off. so personal experience, just around 4:00 p.m. we are driving down the street. my photographer saw some smoke coming from that manhole. we thought it was suspicious and pulled over. he was just going to get some video of the smoke coming out of the manhole and then this. >> what is it? >> reporter: very scary sound. the kind that has you ducking for cover which is what i was doing. i was actually calling 911 afraid another cover would below. we saw fire and smoke coming from another m

good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. a major power outage. a b.a.r.t station shut down. a tree toppled onto a home all due to the bay area's first storm of the season. don knapp begins our team coverage with the rain related power problems. don? >> reporter: ann, traffic lights and power generally out over oakland roughly. perhaps as many as 160 square blocks. now, here in chinatown merchants have been standing outside of their businesses trying to keep them open without power. the traffic lights everywhere are out. and the big concern, of course, is public safety. police dispatches were knocked off the air but they had emergency power kick in. the power over at the fire department did not quick in in quite a hurry. they had a bit of a problem. during the first hour without power fire companies responded to calls by using index cards and handheld walkie talkies or two-way radios. for every false alarm they had to send out fire engines. while the system was off the air for about an hour, then they had power. >> we had a failure in our backup systems today and in about an

good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. a san francisco neighborhood rocked this afternoon by a manhole. investigators still trying to find out what happened. it happened near sacramento streak on samsung. two of our employees caught the whole thing on camera as it happened. >> reporter: this explosion happened at around 4:00 p.m. let me give you the lay of the land. that is a manhole cover that blew off earlier this afternoon. and you can see there are windows boarded up here at king george restaurant. that entire window was blown out by the force of the blast. now, most of samesum between california and clay was blocked off this evening. we had a personal experience driving down the street coming back to the station. when we saw smoke coming from a manhole my photographer and i thought it was suspicious and pulled over. my photographer got out to start rolling video on it. and then we heard this. scary sound. the kind that has you ducking for cover. i was calling 911 afraid that another cover could blow. fire and smoke coming from another manhole. pg&e has not said too much about this

i'm ann notarangelo. well, he is the democrats most effective campaigner. former president bill clinton in san jose tonight lending his support to the top of the ticket in california. don knapp is in san jose where mr. clinton campaigned with jerry brown and gavin newsom. >> reporter: of course, it was a political rally, but the big draw was a political rock star named bill clinton and this audience was really primed for him when he took the stage, the crowd going wild. here's how it went. gavin newsom and jerry brown are the californians running for office, but bill clinton was still the big draw and i think tonight with this crowd he'd be running for anything. he came here to spread some of his drawing power with one time political opponent for the presidential nomination jerry brown who is running for governor and gavin newsom running for lieutenant governor. newsom started off claiming credit for his initiatives in san francisco in education and healthcare, but he made a frank observation before introducing brown and clinton. >> i'm the guy that you'll

good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. >>> they were on the job that night the night of the pipeline explosion in san bruno but the "chronicle" reports those pg&e employees have not talked to investigators about what happened that night. don knapp on the reason the workers have so far not been interviewed. >> reporter: big questions remain about the gas pipeline blast that destroyed 37 san bruno homes and left eight dead including what was going on with pipeline pressure before the blast and why it took an lure.5 to turn it off. the "chronicle" reports two pacific gas and electric employees who played important roles in responding to the blast have not yet talked about it. they say they are too traumatized to do so. congresswoman jackie speier told kcbs she expects the national transportation safety board will eventually question the two. >> the one thing that's important in any of these explosions is that human error is often times the element that is relevant. >> reporter: the ntsb told the "chronicle" the two declined to speak with federal safety board investigators in the week after the di

good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. >>> well, bart service in the east bay is fully restored now after a person in a wheelchair was hit by a train. it happened at 2:00 this afternoon, at the hayward bart station. and bart spokesman lyndon johnson says it appears the man in the wheelchair got too close to the edge of the platform as the train was arriving, and rolled on to the tracks. and service on the fremont line was disrupted about a half an hour. the man was taken to the hospital. no word on his condition. >>> teens, drugs, and a cow palace rave have proven to be a terrible combination once again. more than a dozen party-goers hospitalized and some in critical condition because of apparent overdoses. anne makovec has more on the halloween party that turned into a nightmare. >> people are crazy. >> last night, crazy turned dangerous. 16 people were taken to the hospital during a party at the cow palace. three considered critical. with symptoms of drug and alcohol overdose. >> we saw a lot of altered levels of consciousness and inability to maintain their own airway, a lot of vomits.

i'm ann notarangelo. a new field poll shows tight races in two state-wide contests with many voters still undecided. in the race for lieutenant governor, san francisco mayor gavin newsom has a slight lead over incumbent abel maldonado. in the attorney general race, steve cooley has 39% and carmelo harris has 38%. and don knapp on how the analysts are reading the results. >> reporter: san francisco mayor gavin newsom is five points ahead of state lieutenant governor abel maldonado in a new field poll. that's beyond the margin of error but not so far ahead the mayor can relax says the poll director mark decamillo. >> we've been seeing that gavin newsom has had an advantage over maldonado in this race in each of the previous polls that was the case. and we're seeing it again in this case. but the lead is not comfortable. it is very close. but it is a lead nonetheless. it is outside the margin of error. >> that's why i'm going the route of the public utilities commission. >> reporter: maldonado won public sup

good evenings, i'm ann notarangelo. >>> a setback for emergency services. a b.a.r.t station shutdown and a tree toppled into a home. the bay area's first big storm of the season. don knapp begins our coverage with power problems. >> reporter: power still off over a broad swathe of oakland. 160 square blocks by some estimates. it has been considered all the way out to the bay from lake merit. quite a broad area. now traffic lights are off. that's of course the big concern. and firefighters have been chasing down false alarms. in the first hour of the power outage itself triggered 50 fire alarms and fire engines had to respond to just about all of them. there were no serious incidents that we know of reported so far. the fire dispatch center itself was also in trouble because of the power outage. backup services came on and they got back online quickly for the police but fire dispatch office was down for about an hour. the fire dispatchers were forced to use index cards and handheld two-way radios to get the right responses to the calls. it took about one or

ann notarangelo joins us us, they say the landlord is holding them hostage. >> reporter: yeah, some have some obligations to do in their lease. it is a gated community. that's what you pay for is to get a community like this. would one woman every month has been sexual assaulted. we did see one moving truck. others are sure to follow. one woman said she gave her 30- day notice. she says she knows she is probably going to be asked to pay the $3,000 penalty for breaking her lease and she doesn't care, she says she is headed out because she doesn't feel safe. she blames apartment management, she says they haven't done enough. saturday someone was attacked, she fought off the attacker, hurt falling down the stairs. they did arrest one man in connection with the first three assaults, however, these last two, police believe they may be connected by the same individual but they do not have a suspect in custody. in fact they are hoping at this time to be able to get some witnesses to talk to them and hope that they can get a suspect description out to the public maybe as early as this evening. a
