berkeley. theresa garcia, they fear education will be decimated. >> well, you know, that fear is valid since the largest spending cut would be in public education by an amount over $3 billion. and on a positive note, there's actually some increased funding for higher education but that is not stopping the picket rallies and marches taking place today for funding to public education. that's what people are upset about. the new budget proposes suspending the funding guarantee, lowering the school spending by $3 billion. half of that amount would happen by defearing school bills until the following fiscal year. community colleges would also have to wait for a $2 million payment. the only increase to the two higher education systems, both the university of california and the state university stand to receive $200 million each and that's to compensate for last year's cuts and fully fund enrollment growth. overall these deep reductions are a surprise, especially since the last couple of years they lo

berkeley today. ticketing starts at 6:00 this morning. organizers lead a walkout from classes at 11:30 and hold the rally at noon followed by a sit-in. it includes u.c. students, faculty and campus works. >> caltrain's board of directors is expected to approve a fare hike when it meets today. it means commuters would pay 25 cents more per zone. a trip between san francisco and san jose would go from 75 cents to $8.50. four week-day trains would be cut from the schedule leaving caltrain with only hourly service from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. the changes are part of a plan to balance cal tran's $100 million budget and would take effect in january. despite all the proposed cuts, a report out yesterday revealed caltrain executives have still been getting hefty pay raises. >> many express concerns about mountain lions near their neighborhood and a local deer population provides them with plenty of prey. this comes after employees at the lawrence berkeley natural lab spotted an adult female and two cubs on the grounds of the lab. allen wong tells us mo

[ music ] >> today was the day cal trans broke on through to the other side. punching through is still ahead. >>> but up first, a police apology after officers . >> classes will go on as usual monday even though a fire damaged part of a richmond high school early this morning. the fire on valley view road destroyed the kitchen and damaged the cafeteria. investigators say the fire appears suspicious. they found fire extinguishers that had been discharged inside. school officials say the fire cost an estimated $1 million in damage. a portable kitchen will be used next week. >> oakland police have received dozens of calls from people who are outraged about an officer who shot and killed a family's dog. police were investigating a possible home burglary. the

four robberies occurred in different parts of berkeley last tuesday and wednesday. police believe they may be linked and a fifth robbery in oakland next wednesday that may also be connected. the suspects robbed people walking on the green way trail and on city streets. police say the suspect used a pistol in the tuesday robberies and a shotgun in the crimes on wednesday. a friend of two of the victims said she is more careful now. >> i've just been trying to be more cautious and not walk alone as much and look around corners as i walk down streets. >> police believe the same robbers are involved because they used similar weapons. >>> authorities are looking for a third man in connection with a series of sexual assaults in an apartment complex in walnut creek. police arrested 51-year-old william owe come last week. he's accused of a rain on september 16th. he lived at the complex and knew his victim. his arrest brings little relief to residents because the man responsible for an attempted sexual assault on october second is still on the loose. >> i do feel a little b
