claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. children's hospital said it is ready to serve its patients today despite the fact that 800 nurses are walking off the job. behind me you can see a couple dozen nurses getting ready to get going on this strike which officially gets underway in just about 15 minutes. temporary nurses from out of state will be crossing the picket lines over the next 15 minutes or so. so this is a bit of a transition time. the hospital has set up security check points in the hospital to make sure striking nurses stay on public property and out of the hospital. in fact we have video of one of those check points inside the outpatient building a few minutes ago. the hospital says it's trying to make sure the 125 nurse who is are temporarily working here for the next three days will not face any kind of intimidation while they're inside the building. they're working 12 hour shifts with 40 or so leadership staff also pitching in. the hospital says it's hoping to be able to cover the work normally done by almos

ktvu's claudine wong joins us with more on the developing story. good morning, claudine. >> yes, we're at the high school, the fire happened just down the way from where we're standing at the school's cafeteria. an arson investigation is underway. at this point firefighters do believe this looks suspicious. want to show you video we took just minutes ago. this fire started about 1:30 this morning. just a little bit. firefighters got a call saying someone spotted flames coming from the back of the school. when they got here, they didn't see visible flames. they went in, put the fire out. when they got in, firefighters tell me they started seeing something suspicious. the fire did start, from what they believe, in the kitchen of this high school cafeteria. however, there was evidence someone had used a fire extinguisher, uh, some time during the night when the cafeteria was supposed to be locked up and empty. that leads them to believe that someone was in there and someone who wasn't supposed to be in there. what we know at this point was there was a

let's go live to ktvu reporter claudine wong who is on this breaking news. >> reporter: good morning, sal. we are on the side. you can see behind me, this crash that is making a mess. what you're looking at is a traverse behind that vehicle, however, are two more vehicles. this is a three-car accident that one vehicle you see was going the wrong way down the tube when this very, very serious accident happened. we had a couple of minutes to talk to alameda police before we got on. and they told me this started as a traffic stop. we're still trying to get more details and trying to get the conditions of the victims. this is a very serious crash. i can tell you when i was down there and looking at the other vehicle, it was not in shape. we are just getting into this. we are told this happened a little after midnight. so we are hours into this. but still a lot of questions. again, we're going to go down and talk more with police. if you are heading from oakland to alameda, the tube is closed. you will not be able to get through. you will have to go around to 23rd and get over that way. ob

good morning, jade. >> good morning, claudine. i know you were out here earlier yesterday but we can still show the lane closure for drivers. we just spoke to a contractor who works for caltrans and he says that crews won't be actually out here until 8:00 a.m. they don't expect this lane to reopen until this afternoon. now, caltrans wasn't sure how much of a delay drivers would experience this morning. but they did expect a 30-minute one. we noticed traffic slow up a little bit. if you are headed in the peninsula, use the dumbarton or bay bridge, just to avoid any thaiups this delay may cause. crews worked to repair a 10- inch crack. it's about 100 feet east of the highway 92. workers discovered it during a routine biannual inspection. there was a girder installed in 1991. the beam will not be replaced. it is being reinforced with steel plates on top and below the beam. part of the reason why only the far right westbound lane remains closed. caltrans spokesmen explained to us the difference between this beam and the work done on t

claudine wong has the latest. >> reporter: from our vantage point on treasure island, we can show you the work that's underway. what you are looking at leaning in that 75-degree or so angle is the section of the tower that's supposed to be lift. they are gonna get it perpendicular and raise it hundreds of feet in the air. when that goes up, the drivers on the bay bridge will get a front-row seat. at around 5:00 this morning, ktvu got this exclusively look at this 107-foot section of tower that will be part of the signature tower of the new bay bridge. the section was brought over on a barge to the construction site before dawn. as crews got ready to undertake this massive project. this is phase ii of a five- stage project. this work is happening right at eye level to drivers at the bay bridge. and that has caltrans warning drivers about keeping their eyes on the road and not the project. >> it's an interesting thing to say, hey, we're doing this amazing thing but don't look. there was really no way to screen it but we looked into it. it was better just to get the word out that we're d

good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we're at the san bruno cal train station and we've been talking to riders this morning who aren't happy about the news. the story is not an unfamiliar one. it's a deficit and higher fares and service cuts are the apparent answer. this morning we're not finding anyone really happy to hear that this vote today could be just the beginning of some big and painful changes for cal train riders. they say they know it's coming. cal train right now trying to close a $2.3 million shortfall. today the is staff will present a proposal expected to pass. it will increase full fare, by 25 cents. increase go pass of $140 to $155. the agency has been getting a lot of comments. more than 1500 from the public in fact in a month long outreach program. most people were actually in favor of increasing fares rather than reducing service. certainly one rider we talk today this morning felt that same way. >> i don't care if they will raise it. but if they cut the services and customer service not good. that's

ktvu claudine wong is live. >> good morning. it's the nature of this shooting we shocked people that we talked to this morning. it's an every day errand this man was doing at this atm at 9:15 in the morning. we are at broadway in the rockridge area. the man was at the atm when a man walked up behind him and shot him twice. the gunman jumped into a nearby car and took off. the victim was critically injured. he was able to talk to police when they arrived. >> crime is get song high these days. it's not surprising. >> it's very sad when anybody gets shot. >> reporter: this wasn't the only violent incident of the weekend. one woman was killed and six people injured. you're looking at video at a shooting on west street friday night when carolyn howard was shot and killed. they do not believe she was a target. a $25,000 reward is being offered for information in her case. a $5,000 is being offered for any information that helps them solve this atm shooting. police are hoping in this case that surveillance video. we can see several cam

good morning, claudine. >> good morning, dave. certainly riders we talked to this morning were a little surprised to see how much security was out here. at this oakland amtrak station. we have actually tsa, department of homeland security, as well as amtrak police, oakland police also came through here this morning. this is something that you are going to see, however, at amtrak stations across the bay area. and across the country. there's even a similar effort in rail stations in europe today as well. it was all part of operation rail safe. it's an effort to increase the presence of uniformed officers, just to keep riders on their toes, and to let any kind of criminal element that might target the nation's rails know that they are being watched. this is not being organized by the department of homeland security. amtrak says this is something that has been done a lot on the east coast. but expected to be a more common occurrence on the west coast. >> they will be coming up. and general public. you just never know when they're goin

claudine, how much progress has been made? >> you know, they're actually making quite a bit progress, tori. i want to show you the neighborhood this morning. because really it's been a remarkable difference when you talk about the devastation that littered this. you can take a look at the heavy construction equipment that sits in that yard. there's really not much left in there to be cleared out. as we take a look at this neighborhood this morning. there are really only a couple of sites that look like the one across the street there that still has debris, littering the yard. they want to get all that was cleared out. what they want to do is give this neighborhood a fresh start. and they are really making some significant progress in making that happen. all they have to do is get the green light from the county to say, look, we're not going to make it harder on you. we're going to clear this out so you guys can rebuild. this process is supposed to be wrapped up pretty soon. they wanted to get it done after the rainy season. wo

claudine wong explains in this report. >> reporter: as she waited for her amtrak train today she could not help but notice tsa, homeland security, amtrak police, all patrolling the station. >> it concerned me. i wanted to know what was going on. >> reporter: it is called operation rail safe. the idea is simple, get uniformed officers to patrol stations and keep awareness high. it is not in response to a specific threat but it is being donation wide in conjunction with rail action day. there is also a similar effort underway in europe today. >> this is the first one for the west coast. we will be doing other ones. you never know when law enforcement is going to show up at the station. >> it is effective for me because i never know when they are here. i am surprised to see you here and searching the train. i can see it is a nice show of force that they are trying to keep the train safe. >> reporter: police say that was a coordinateddest with local agency not hesitating to help out. >> here is where i am impressed. er am very impressed at the number of local police agencies that joined us

claudine wong is on this story. she'll have more information in the next half hour. >>> time now 5:03. a big vote set for thursday by california lawmakers on the state's long overdue budget. governor schwarzenegger and legislative leaders finally came to an agreement late friday. the details for closing the state's $19 billion deficit reportedly include $7.5 billion in spending cuts, down from the $12 billion the governor asked for. the deal anticipates getting $5 billion from the federal government. $1.4 billion from state revenues and $1.2 billion from selling 11 state properties and leasing them back. >>> now a ruling's expected today from the california supreme court on whether the governor can keep ordering state employees to take unpaid days off to balance the budget. the so-called furlough fridays started in february of last year. several lawsuits have challenged those furloughs. the supreme court has combined those lawsuits into one. >>> this morning: crews will begin cleaning up the remnants of a diesel fue

ktvu's claudine wong explains why the cause appears to be suspicious. >> reporter: as kids arrived at school this morning, they were met with this sight. the charred remains of what used to be the cafeteria's kitchen. he just keeps thinking about how much worse it could have been. >> a little bit, yeah. since it's right next to the band room. that's like my favorite place in school. >> reporter: firefighters say the 911 call came in just before 1:30 this morning when someone spotted flames shooting out of the building. the fire station is just three blocks away and firefighters say they got on scene quickly. it didn't take them long to get the fire out. they were able to contain the fire to the one building. and the damage is mostly in the kitchen where they believe the fire started. the damage to the kitchen area is significant. but it's what firefighters found in the dining room of this cafeteria that made them suspicious. take a look at the floor and you can see a powder. firefighters saythat powder is from fire extinguishers when they are used. we saw at least three fire extinguis

claudine wong is live. >> reporter: good morning. it's still unclear if we're dealing with some kind of ritual or prank. people want to track down whoever put the two human hearts in jars and buried them here at the holy cross catholic cemetery. it's a bit of a mystery this morning. the discovery was made on october 12th. a maintenance worker was out here when he saw the tops of two jars sticking out of the ground. he took a closer look that had him calling police. inside the jars were human hearts. each jar had a picture of a different couple pinned to the jar. the paper says candles and cigar butts nearby and the coroner found the hearts were embalmed. although there are no reports of bodies being dug out. so at this point police are just trying to track it all down. trying to figure out who did this. there are several crimes that could relate to digging up organs obviously. and theyst want to know who is behind it. the mystery does continue out here. live claudine wong. >>> watsonville police are asking for the public's health to

claudine wrong hasp an update from firefighters. >> we're on the bam parking lot yards from where this fire started in california. school will be in session this morning, there's also an arson investigation underway. this all started just before 1:30 this morning when someone called 911, they saw flames coming from the back of danza high school. firefighters say when they got here, there was a lot of smoke and a lot of flames. they believe the fire was burning for several minutes before it was spotted. they were able to put the fire out with heavy damage to the kitchen area of this cafeteria. it's when they got into the building that they got suspicious. >> after we got done, we opened everything up, ventilation was completed, we noticed there was dry chemical powder in the dining room area of the cafeteria. we found one or two discharged fire distinguishes on the building. that raised a red flag for us. we called our fire investigators, currently out here to come out and investigate the fire. >> why they were discharged, we're not -- so they believe that a white powder, the chemical p

good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, day. you know, as you hear the details of this rescue, it does seem pretty incredible. you have a good samaritan who was not only very observant but also very persistent not giving up when the suspect did not want to pull over. even the police chief is calling the rescue of this 8- year-old girl a, quote, miracle of god. certainly statistics aren't encouraging in these types of situations. fresno's police chief saying in the case of stranger abductions, 40% of kidnapped kids are killed before police are even called and within 24 hours 90% are dead. but this story beats those odds and that's thanks to a man who not only watched the news but did something about it. now, for some reason yesterday morning the suspect, 24-year- old gregorio gonzalez, came back into the neighborhood where this 8-year-old girl was abducted just 11 hours earlier. that's when victor perez saw him. perez had been seeing pictures of gonzalez's truck on tv so when it drove by he took action. >> i was yelling but i kep

claudine. >> reporter: good morning, kraig. the search for the two suspects responsible for this terrifying ordeal continues this morning. we are at the intersection near where all of this happened. a family of 12 held up in a home invasion. it happened overnight. one of the victims told ktvu that a family member was actually outside the home smoking when the two suspects approached around 11:00 last night. the suspects who police say were wearing hoods over their heads forced the family member back into the house. one was carrying a silver revolver. one family member was apparently held at gunpoint while the suspects went through the house stealing cash and electronic equipment including a computer. there were actually 12 victims inside this house when all of this happened. they range in age from 3 years old to 70 years old. fortunately no one was hurt and the suspect sped away in the silver infinity. we don't have a more details description of the suspects for you right now. but we can tell you that we're looking into a coupl
