great mrepleasure to welcome to larry king president hamid karzai. he is the president of afghanistan. he comes to us from the presidential palace in kabul. thank you for being with us. we've just marked the ninth anniversary of this war. did you ever think it would take so long? >> no, sir. i never thought it was going to take so long. in 2001 when this whole effort against extremism and terrorism began, the afghan people and the international community joined hands and the victory came within a month and a half. subsequent to that, we all felt that now it was going to be the rebuilding of afghanistan and towards a more secure, brighter future. parts of it we achieved. parts it which was security and the absolute defeat of terrorism, not yet. >> larry: many americans, as you know, mr. president, are anxious about our being there. many are asking, what is the united states' purpose? what can we still achieve in your country? >> well, the united states came to afghanistan after september 11th in order to make the united states more secure from terrori

the president of afghanistan, hamid karzai, has now acknowledged he's in direct talks with the taliban leadership, wants to create what he calls a peace council. here's the question and it goes to mr. coons. would you support a negotiated settlement in afghanistan that includes taliban representation, would that be acceptable to you, a deal between hamid karzai and the taliban? >> wolf, i'm concerned about the security of our troops in the field and about honoring the service and the sacrifice of our veterans. the war in afghanistan is the war of the two that we've been engaged in, iraq and afghanistan, that i think was justified by a direct attack on the united states. the taliban, who were offering harbor to al qaeda, who were authors of the 9/11 attack. in our 10th year now on the ground in afghanistan, we have to look hard at whether we're continuing to contribute to america's security by having 100,000 troops on the ground. i would support a negotiation that allowed us to leave security and intelligence assets in place and allowed us the opportunity to reengage if al qaeda should

we're very happy to have with us as our guest president hamid karzai coming to us from the palace in kabul. president obama is going to draw down united states troops in your country next summer. what is your relationship with you and are you worried that the united states might abandon you? >> this is a very important question. relations with president obama are very good. we have regular contact. we just had a video conference about five days ago. the relation with the u.s. government is generally good. there is a strategic relationship between us. partnerships toward an objective that's security for us and security for the united states and the rest of the world. the afghan people have been abandoned before when we fought the soviets. the international community supported us. but after their defeat, we were abandoned and forgotten immediately, including by the united states. now, that fear lingers on in the afghan people. it's something that i've not been able to reassure the afghan people. and i hope the united states of america and our other allies will help us through good mean

karzai's government have begun secret high-level talks over ending the war. a deal that would put some taliban figures in the government. sources believe this is the first time that taliban representatives involved in these talks are fully authorized to speak for the afghan taliban organization based in pakistan. representatives for that group's leader have shunned talks in the past, insisting that all foreign troops withdraw first. however, in these meetings, there has apparently been discussion of a withdrawal on an agreed timeline. >>> meanwhile, yesterday marked a second day of violence in kandahar. a pair of explosions killed nine people. nearly two dozen others were hurt. >>> in neighbors pakistan, gunmen have once again struck nato tankers heading into afghanistan. this time at least 25 oil tankers were torched. one driver was also shot dead. this marks the third major attack since a week ago when pakistan closed a border crossing into afghanistan. the closure was in protest of nato helicopter strikes in pakistan. it's unclear who is behind the latest
